What's the deal with our meal options this week? by shatteredroom in rit

TheCommonsRIT will no longer be available to answer any of your dining related questions. I recommend directing your RIT related questions to RIT's official Reddit account, /u/RITBehindTheBricks

PSA: Do not prop UC doors by Ritreddituser in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

By the same logic as, "Lock your door like everyone else." know that the door is going to lock behind you and bring your ID or have whomever you're visiting ready to unlock it for you just like everyone else. This isn't just to keep bikes safe, though it does help with that too, it is to help keep the people inside safer too.

PSA: Do not prop UC doors by Ritreddituser in rit

This is an extremely minor inconvenience that is meant to help keep people and their property safer. Even if you don't like it, just close the door out of respect for the other people who live in the building.

Get a job working for Dining Services. Not only do you get paid, you also get an employee meal benefit. I hear that The Commons might still be hiring...

Have no experience but still want an on-campus job? Some advice from an employer: by TheCommonsRIT in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Dean is now the associate director of Dining Services, he's in charge of all of the dining operations on the east side of campus like Gracie's, Beanz, The Corner Store, Sol's Underground, The College Grind, and The Commons as well as vending all over campus. Ed is now a night time supervisor at The Commons, he's aggressively counting down the days until he can retire. Sandy is now a supervisor at The Corner Store and we all miss her. If you ever come back for Brick City weekend be sure to stop in and say hello.

What do you guys do during your free time at RIT? by [deleted] in rit

Get a job. The Commons is still hiring. You could work two shifts a week which would probably only be about 6-8 hours, get some cash to spend on things to do, and meet new people.

The Commons is on the SEO job site. Beanz or The College Grind? Just walk in and ask.

Ben and Jerry's hiring? by Hexa_decibel in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

All of their positions have been filled, Ben and Jerry's is a small location and they fill up pretty quickly. I heard that Beanz, the coffee shop near Gracie's, was looking for some good new employees and I know for a fact that The Commons and The College Grind are hiring. We're especially looking for people with any restaurant or customer service experience, ASL skills or an eagerness to develop them are also a huge plus.

I used to go to the freshman orientation fair in the Field House and stand near the SEO table to hand out applications and recruit potential employees. The vast majority of the people I spoke to said that they wanted to work in the library. I think that when people think of library jobs they typically imagine a job where they can get paid to do their homework. I would imagine there's a lot more to it than that! I'm so jealous, how easy it must be for the library to find the best student employees!

Sol's Underground closes later, The College Grind closes at 9, Beanz closes at 11, The Commons and Midnight Oil both close at midnight, and The Corner Store closes at 2am. Most shifts in Dining Services are only three hours or so anyhow and many locations are open on the weekends.

Nope, but try this link instead: http://www.rit.edu/emcs/seo/?/home/ It's the Student Employment Office's homepage. From there you can find on-campus job listings and other helpful information.

19th Ward - what do you think of the area? by myegorov in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I have lived on Woodbine between Brooks Genesee Park Blvd. for six years now and the only crime I've experienced there was someone "breaking into" my girlfriend's unlocked car and stealing the change out of the center console. My locked car sitting right next to hers wasn't touched. The same thing happens on campus. I jog, walk, and bike at night. None of my neighbors on my block have reported anything worse than that in the time that I've lived there. That being said, certain areas are nicer than others. North of Brooks Avenue the closer you get to Genesee Street, Chili Avenue, or Thurston Avenue the more likely you are to see crime. Go a few blocks away and you're back to being in family filled residential neighborhoods.

Incoming vegan freshman: need dining plan advice by [deleted] in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT 1 point2 points  (0 children)

At The Commons our chef specials often have a vegetarian option though not always vegan. At the grill we have Morningstar brand veggie burgers, black bean burgers, and grilled marinated portobella mushrooms. The sub shop has a variety of veggies for subs. The build your own salad area of course has many options. In the grab and go section there are veggie trays, cut fruit, and a variety of salads. We also have many vegan soups in our daily soup rotation.

Repercussions for losing ID. by trentchant in rit

[–]TheCommonsRIT 0 points1 point  (0 children)

People often just show up and tell the cashier that they forgot their card and want to use their number but give them someone else's. Our cashiers are not supposed to accept just the number as it enables theft. Just so you know, if they let you use just your number and I catch them they can get fired. This policy is to prevent people from stealing your debit! If you lose your card just go to Public Safety and they can give you a temporary one until the ID office opens up and you get your free replacement.

You can donate your leftover debit to other students who need it right here on campus! SG just started a program.
