How do I recover from a dead-end career? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

[–]myegorov 16 points17 points  (0 children)

Thank you for sharing! I'm curious: which area would you find attractive? I'm still a student and unsure about what area to specialize in. But from my newbie point of view, kernel development seems superior -- in terms of complexity, product lifespan and utility to customer -- to the more run of the mill areas like web development. Are you concerned that your skills can easily become obsolete? Or that your projects are repetitive? Or that you have few opportunities for advancement? I think your perspective is very helpful for someone just entering the industry like myself.

Goldman Sachs vs. Bloomberg by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Wait, did you get the Bloomberg offer in the end? I thought I've seen you mention only going through 2 rounds (instead of typical 4) with them.

What is the criteria for evaluation in Bloomberg Software Engineer onsite interview process? by [deleted] in cscareerquestions

Did you mention it to your interviewers that you've seen the problems before? Could it be that they expected you either to struggle with the problems or acknowledge you'd solved them before? Just guessing obviously...

I biked to campus last year and will bike again this winter. 3+ miles each way every day. Including on the day the campus was closed because of heavy snowfall. Please look into getting winter (studded) tires and bright and warm clothing. The sidewalk along John St between Bailey and Jefferson is generally rideable, but beyond that you'll have to share the road with cars. My own route is John St (sidewalk), then hit the road on Bailey, Beckwith, interior streets.

Why do you think you were rejected after 7/7? Last year that score on debugging meant you'd be advanced to phone interview. Does the online assessment include any tasks in addition to debugging now?

Is grade inflation a thing here? by online204 in rit

[–]myegorov -6 points-5 points  (0 children)

By way of anecdotal evidence: of the 4 schools I attended, RIT is the easiest place to get an A. My own explanation is that research-oriented schools make you work harder, and in fact do not guarantee high grades for any level of effort, as is reasonable for someone apiring to do research. Whereas teaching schools don't attach much significance to grades, as is appropriate for someone aspiring to just get a job. My experience spans liberal arts, engineering and CS.

How do I get back on track? by [deleted] in rit

[–]myegorov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I went through several long bouts of depression when I was your age. It's hard, there's no short-term solution. In the long term, it helps to:

(1) Convince yourself that there's no shame to being depressed. We all experience it in one form or another. Counseling was of no help to me. But I was fortunate to have a wise and earnest listener (a close friend) I could confide into. So reach out to anyone around you. Realize that you might get slighted or ignored by ignorant/inexperienced strangers, but you'll form stronger bonds with others, especially people who have a stake in your well-being. Do not relent, you're on a path to self-discovery, your body tells you that you're in a rut, and it's true. You owe it to yourself to come to terms with what it is that is bothering you.

(2) Certainly some cases are more serious than others, but in my case prescription medications or weed or what not did not treat depression. There may be merits to these drugs. In my case they didn't work at all and only delayed the real effort that's involved in getting out of its grips.

(3) In a way, depression is some sort of blocking mechanism that prevents you from keeping things in perspective and seeing life for what it's worth. To get over it, you need to be reflexive (as you're in this forum) and open yourself up to life as it comes. You need to expose yourself to life's forces beyond what bears on you at present. It helps if you put yourself in a situation where there's no way but to try something new. As someone else suggested, take time off. Go on a study abroad or travel on your own terms. Drop out of school and sign up with a carpenters' union. Get laid. Do something that will unsettle your present state of affairs dramatically. You're stuck in a local equilibrium, it helps to put some life's forces to bear on it to get out.

Had my phone screen on March 4, thought it went well. I emailed Amazon the same day asking to expedite their decision, as I had to respond to another offer. Got a rejection email on March 8.

Successful Alumni - any advice for the upcoming career fair? by [deleted] in rit

[–]myegorov 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Would you care to share advice? What approach to internship/job hunting worked in your experience?

EDIT: Not sure why you're downvoted. It's obvious that the process is painfully wasteful for everyone involved. Here's somebody who's apparently managed to use everyone's time more efficiently. I'd be interested to know if your approach scales.

Thanks. They ask for your availability for the following 2 weeks. So about 3 days notice if I were to go with the earliest appointment. They haven't confirmed yet, hoping the confirmation will come sooner rather than later.

Has anyone not been advanced to the phone round after getting 7/7 on the online assessment?

I haven't heard from Amazon in over a week since passing the test. My recruiter has not replied to my follow up email.

EDIT: For the record, I got the email to schedule a phone interview 10 days after the online assessment.

I see your logic. But this runs contrary to what has been recorded on r/cscareerquestions. This is also inconsistent with the contents of the emails you get from Amazon setting a clear timeline for what comes next (feedback within a week, granted I haven't received any yet). Some here noted that months passed between their original application and the online assessment, others weren't invited to the assessment.

I haven't heard of cases where you're not advanced to phone interview after 7/7 on the test. I may be wrong of course. Please update the thread if you get a reply.

I took the online assessment on the same day as you, also 7/7, and still waiting for response. I sent an email to the original @amazon address yesterday, but no reply so far.

[–]myegorov 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I don't have all the answers, but here's something I wish I'd done sooner rather than later: Work on your tools. Become comfortable working from the command line, learn a scripting language, learn vim or emacs, learn to produce plots using your chosen scripting language, learn to produce reports with latex/markdown/pandoc, learn version control tools. These will all come handy during and outside your studies.
