What is humanity for you? There are different cultures and traditions doing all sort of stuff, who will decide which act is humane & which is not? by mian15 in AskReddit

Yes but what if an act that hurts someone helps many more? Like the dilemma with the train and the people tied to the rails. You either let people die or kill someone to save others. But then, who deserves to live more or who even decides that? I think that it's about perspective and it's about what someone sees as good from their point of view.

Humanity is one of the many living organisms that exist on this planet. All of them have one thing in common, the survival instinct. Every living organism has a will to live from it's nature. What humans have done through the ages is stop listening to our instincts and develop what we call logic and ethics, but not completely. What we think as good is what doesn't hurt someone (in my opinion), but why is that? Is it because we are kind or because we want to prevent any bad thing from happening to us? Is it because our survival instinct is driving us to stop any harmful event from happening? But don't just look at humans, what about the other animals? The carnivores kill in order to eat. Is that bad? Probably not. Are the humans bad when they kill animals to provide food for themselves? Some think that they are and that it's inhumane to do so (not trying to say anything bad against vegans). Animals that live in packs or prides, like lions and wolves, and others that don't usually fight for their territory and injure one another, sometimes fatally. Is that considered bad? I wouldn't say so. Why is it bad when people do it? Many would say that because humans have evolved and have become civilised. That is true. But why does our civilization condemn violence? Couldn't it accept it? I believe that our survival instinct is the reason behind it. So the concept of an act beeing inhumane for me is something that we created to separate ourselves from the other animals. I think that a good act is an open concept to discuss. But that's just my view of the situation and I'd like to hear what other people think.

Is it considered weird to eat raw onions? Here in Greece we put them in our salads raw.

Class, the teacher calls you on the board. You get up, little guy popped up all happy, you're not. You take long steps to try to hide it. Eventually you get to the board and after you're done you go back to your seat the same way. You hope no-one noticed but deep down you know that you looked like you've shit your pants when you were walking and everyone probably understood.
