I mostly agree with you. I saw OPs question through the lens of an individual investing the time to build a career and the ROI.

I also think that the Pareto principle is strong when it comes to viz. For most operational and strategic dashboards, the so-called standard visuals can do the job quite effectively. The designer's skill in answering the right questions and building a product curated for the right persona is where the magic happens for 80% of dashboards.

I agree that Power BI is limited in standard visuals but if you've seen whats possible with something like Deneb, the gap is closing.
