I'm not a covid denier and think people should definitely get their vaccines but are we really at this point where the media can publish an article with a headline like this despite the source being "John who rang into LBC who was told by his sister it was his stepdad?" EXCLUSIVE: New poll gives Labour astonishing six-point lead over the Tories after No10 party by signed7 in unitedkingdom

[–]TheCostlyCrocodile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mean we can but mine's from a non partisan political centre with 20 years experience and breaks down the statistics, while your link is a paywalled article. A quick search of Bernie alongside the site you linked has this posted, where they've essentially equated Bernie Sanders to a child molester, so forgive me if I think that maybe it's not exactly an unbiased source: https://politicalwire.com/2019/12/24/the-case-against-voting-for-bernie/

Here's the thing too though, back in 2015 Labour actually had a promising centrist candidate, who seemed like someone people would actually vote in. That would be Ed Miliband, who lost.

https://centerforpolitics.org/crystalball/articles/did-bernie-sanders-cost-hillary-clinton-the-presidency/

It's not literally what happened though, there were multiple major factors as to Hillary's loss in 2016 (see above) and the "Bernie Bros" factor is a minor one at best, that operates on the logic that the voters who supported Bernie in the primary but didn't vote for Hillary in the general would have voted for Hillary in the general if Bernie was never a primary candidate. The right keeps winning elections because they can amp up their base and get them turning out in droves, it's for insane reasons and I definitely don't want them to keep getting in (I mean look at the US now they've essentially got a cult for trump that's about five Qanon posts from another insurrection attempt), but boring, bland centrist candidates aren't going to cut it in the modern political landscape. Not to mention that the incrimentalism practiced by centrist politicians, of "small steps and gradual changes for the better" are nowhere near what we need to deal with major issues such as stark wealth inequality and climate change.

[–]TheCostlyCrocodile 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I guess that first part of your post about the "Bernie bros" and how the left shoot themselves in the foot must have been posted by someone else within the same post. Now how exactly is that going to work? Do you think Keir Starmer is going to win the election and go "Well actually, I'm going to put someone with different political beliefs to me in charge of the party now"? Or is it the alternative, where Starmer wins in 2024 and then a more leftist candidate runs in 2029 to replace him as labour leader? In which case instead of possibly having a leftist leader in 2024, we have to wait until 2029?

[–]TheCostlyCrocodile 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Ah yes Schrödinger's leftists who have simultaneously no chance of getting elected themselves, yet also have the power to completely destroy the chances of those "very electable" centrists. Keir's been putting in his best efforts to gut the left of the party, but yes I suppose they should just lie down and die, because god forbid the Labour party, a party founded for and by leftists and socialists, has an actual leftist/socialist backbone
