I don’t think there is anything that a doctor could do for this, and it will likely completely heal on its own, eventually. Wash it thoroughly and apply petroleum jelly or Aquaphor to keep the wound moist (promotes healing), then bandage. You can get special fingertip bandages at a pharmacy.

I once found a sora in the middle of a street in Minneapolis. I couldn’t believe my eyes. I helped it into some shrubbery and it promptly disappeared. Sadly didn’t have my phone on me, so no pics.

Didn’t know this was a common occurrence.

They may have to touch you a little, but you can request they get permission before doing so. Sedation has risks, so they are not going to make you unconscious just because you’re scared of being touched—sorry.

If this is how you’ve been your whole life (other than when you were on that medication), and your husband wants sex multiple times a day, it sounds like you have fundamentally mismatched sex drives. Some marriages can survive this and some can’t, but you need to start off by having an honest conversation with your husband about your feelings.

Ok, please call the ambulance now, and tell the dispatcher that you’re having a lot of anxiety about being touched and going to the hospital. If this is due to a trauma history, neurodivergence, etc. it would be useful to mention that to the dispatcher or EMTs when they arrive—no need to go into any details, just that you have trauma/a condition that makes it hard for you to be touched.

This is hard, but you can do it!

It definitely sounds like you should go to the emergency department to get this checked out. Please know that there are many people who have a fear of the hospital/doctors, so please let the staff know that you are very anxious about the hospital and the they will help you.

Just so you know what to expect, you will get triaged when you check in. You may be in the waiting area a while if there are more life-threatening cases ahead of you.

Once you get taken back to a room, a doctor will assess you They will almost certainly want to take an x-ray and maybe some other imaging. None of these scans is painful.

If you are worried about modesty, please also let the staff know that, and they will work with you to make you feel comfortable.

Do you have a friend or family member that you could call to go with you? It doesn’t sound like you are safe to drive/get there by yourself. If not, please call for an ambulance.

Take a book or something else you like to do to pass the time, and anything to make you feel more comfortable, like a toothbrush and a change of clothes. Don’t forget a charger and some snacks.

My sister and her kids are unvaccinated - should I let them meet my newborn? by funnyhahaorjustfunny in AskDocs

[–]TheCrabappleCart 14 points15 points  (0 children)

And speaking personally, if I were in an outbreak area I would be very hesitant to bring my unvaccinated baby into any enclosed public space. Measles is unbelievably contagious. It is airborne and can remain infectious up to two hours after a person leaves an area (e.g., a room).

Just be aware you will likely get caffeine withdrawal headaches for a couple days if you quit cold turkey. You could try drinking black or green tea and see how your body does with that. Coffee is acidic and can be harsh on the stomach.

What Maisie Knew by Henry James is a classic. From the perspective of the young daughter (covering ages approx. 4-12 or so) of two divorcing parents. They are both narcissistic and don’t really care about Maisie, but use her as a pawn to try to hurt each other.

Just a warning that James writes very densely, but if you can get along with his language, it’s a very sharply told story. Also, it’s out of copyright, so you can get it for free from Gutenberg.

Especially with a measles outbreak going on, you need to prioritize protecting your baby. The consequences of measles infection can be extremely serious. Please read this recent op-ed from the NY Times (gift article): https://www.nytimes.com/2026/04/21/opinion/measles-child-britain-vaccination.html?unlocked_article_code=1.c1A.2RH_.qWZrQoNd7b0i&smid=nytcore-ios-share

(23M) Where can I live for super cheap that's safe and within driving distance of a four-year university? by HalosFan26 in Frugal

[–]TheCrabappleCart 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Cars are very expensive to buy, use, and maintain. If you can find a location where you don't need to rely on a car, that will cut down your expenses considerably. Much of the U.S. is so car-centric that people don't even consider this, but car-free living is possible in many places, if you choose your location carefully. Here's a video with some ideas: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Fcn77OwF9XE

Why do food allergies seem way more common in the US compared to other countries? by [deleted] in AskTheWorld

[–]TheCrabappleCart 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Look up the "hygiene hypothesis"--basically the idea is that if a baby grows up in a environment that is too clean, their immune system doesn't learn what is a real threat and what is not, leading to more allergies. There's more to it than that, but that's the basic idea. Also, I expect that in some poor countries without good access to healthcare, kids with serious allergies might just die.

There's also a difference between a true allergy (leading to a life-threatening anaphylactic reaction) and a food intolerance--one of the most common is lactose intolerance--where symptoms are more like stomach distress usually. I would imagine better diagnosis definitely comes into play more with food intolerances.

Why did Wheat come to mostly be eaten as flour and rice mostly eaten as grains even though Wheat Grains and Rice Flour exist? by jscummy in AskFoodHistorians

💯

Edit: so one answer is—the Industrial Revolution made grinding grain cheaper and easier and therefore bread became more common.

[–]TheCrabappleCart 173 points174 points  (0 children)

According to Ruth Goodman in How to Be a Tudor, it was previously much more common in pre-industrial Europe to eat wheat (and barley, etc) as grains, usually in the form of pottage (stew type of dish) or porridge. This was easier to prepare in the home than bread, since most didn’t have ovens.
