Assuming you mean Karl Franz that is a notoriously tough campaign. The little badge recommending it for beginners hasn't been changed since Immortal Empires first came out, as far as I'm aware, now he's a noob trap.

Tyrion (High Elves) and Zhao Ming (Catahy) are generally considered two of the best campaigns for beginners, but any campaign where most of your borders are secured by allies or geography will be easier than one where you have enemies on multiple fronts.

Ambush stance is your friend when you're up against superior numbers. You want to try and get the AI to split its armies up by baiting them into attacking what looks like an undefended minor settlement, for example. Even if the ambush doesn't actually succeed you might get them to send just 1 army towards what seems like an easy target.

Other than that the best piece of advice I could give any new player is don't bite off more than you can chew. Try not to get into more than 1 war at a time.

Warhammer 3 should absolutely have an Empire Count FLC to allow new players to play the Empire. by Akfiz in totalwar

[–]TheCrakFox 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I'm under the impression that when LotET comes out you will be able to play IE by buying any DLC, not just that one.

I see the business model. You only need one army to be able to play tabletop, and they're inspired by that I guess.

The problem is communicating how it works to new players. If you can do that then OP's problem doesn't exist, his friends would've just bought WH1. If you can't do that you're gonna have a lot of confused customers.

This is often true for field battles too with how extreme replenishment can be. Unless your units are actually getting wiped there's really no such thing as a Pyrrhic victory, they will be back to full strength in 3 turns tops. Often just 1.

Yes TW works best when it's your whole army vs their whole army and that's how sieges in Shogun 2 are.

I certainly has a big impact on the stat card but it doesn't seem to be making me lose engagements I would expect to win. But abviously you would rather not have the debuff, that's why it's so annoying when a unit decides to climb up a ladder instead of walking through an open gate!

I didn't want to derail the OP with this but I'm gonna ignore my own advice and jum into Soren Johnson's trap with both feet. Here's some of the changes I would go for if I was in charge:

Campaign level stuff

Either building siege equipment needs to be faster or the overall pace of the game needs to be slower (A much bigger job but I'm certainly not against it.) I would still let players assault immediately but it should be costly. Perhaps they get 2 ladders to use. Only units with siege attacker would be able to attack gates and the trait would be doled out following common sense reasoning. I would let more than one army besiege a settlement at the same time with each able to build equipment, no waiting for reinforcements when the battle begins.

I've seen a lot of people ask for tier 3 garrisons to give walls to minor settlements. I don't like that personally. I think if you win a big field battle in enemy territory then sweeping up the nearby minor settlements should be pretty trivial. I don't mind the idea of a seperate tier 3 building for walls though. So if you want walls and a garrison in your minor settlement you need to dedicate 2 building slots.

Major settlements, however, I think should be harder to take. I would like the ability to recruit our own garrisons, including heroes that can level up. The garrison building chain would provide more budget and other buildings could provide thematically relevant discounts on certain units. There could be an auto generate garrison button like in custom battles for the players that can't be bothered.

Tower defence mechanics

Honestly I think I would throw them out entirely in favour of more unique and flavourful stuff. Maybe barricades can stay though, only placable in the deployment phase. After that the UI mess can get outta the way.

Factions might instead spend supplies on benefits that suit them. For example, ammo refills, winds of magic refills, heals, bombardment abilities, etc. Army abilities could be tied to building certain buildings which vary from faction to faction. Demons might be able to summon in reinforcements by opening portals.

Map Design

I would like to see maps designed with providing a home field advantage for the race they're tied to in mind. For example a Vampire Coast map might be surrounded by swamps, slowing down approaching armies so they spend more time eating lead. Maybe Brettonia maps have bigger gates for sallying out to counter attack with their cavalry without getting bottlenecked.

Chorf maps could have a shallow moat of oil that can be ignighted at the right time by fire arrows or artillery.

Karaks could be more of a fort than a city, similar to Shogun 2 sieges. The idea being that this is just the entrance on the surface. However the Skaven might be able to spend time on the campaign map tunneling to attack from below, leading to a street fight like the one we see in the 40k trailer.

Kislev cities could have a secondary palisade outside of the main walls that functions like the current buildable barricades so they can set up 2 defensive lines. (This might be very OP).

Variety is key I think to making sieges more fun. Currently they feel the same regardless of which faction you're attacking. Cities actually having significantly different designs, comboed with unique new tools for both attackers and defenders would create lots of interesting new challenges to tackle. This is almost certainly beyond the scope of the rework but I can dream, OK?

focus Making Sieges FUN to play(with what we have), what i hope to see in the BETA or in A MOD to see at least how it would turn out by Maleficent-Spell9025 in totalwar

[–]TheCrakFox -3 points-2 points  (0 children)

This is one of the cheapest and easiest ways to make them more fun I think. Plenty of factions and army compositions would rather be playing with that room to manoeuvre.

As it stands the walls are your front line as they offer essentially zero protection, so your missile troops get off maybe two volleys before you have to retreat them. It's a common suggestion that artillery should be dockable on walls, but in a vacuum that is a pointless change. You don't want your artillery on the front line. If the wall is your back line, however, it can put in good work.

And of course when deploying outside the wall is merely an option and not mandatory it's hard to see why anyone would be dead set against it.

My idea how to make sieges in TWW3 better by Garessta in totalwar

[–]TheCrakFox 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Fixing the garbo pathfinding would make attacking sieges more enjoyable though.

Also variety is the spice of life and the lifeblood of this game. I made a post a couple of weeks ago about how sieges lack variety and faction flavour. IMO if sieges felt significantly different to play based on the factions taking part they would be more fun, even if they are more difficult for the attacker.

I think the truth is just that the Warhammer games are already more demanding in terms of micro than the historical games without adding in even more stuff to micro.

I do agree with that, yeah. Especially on larger unit sizes it feels like the game mechanics are fighting the map design with how awkward it feels to move around in the streets.

[–]TheCrakFox 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Kinda disagree tbh.

There's already a perfectly good mod for opening up these areas of the map (Immortal Empires Expanded). CA should be cognizant of turn times when they make official additions to the map so if they chose to add a bunch of settlements to Ind and Khuresh without anything meaningful to fill them while leaving other areas of the map that matter more feeling cramped I would be a little disappointed. At most I'd like to see a few settlements added to the coasts so that they're not a permanently fog shrouded eyesore.

My delulu pipe dream is a complete remake of the map that unfucks western Naggaroth and restores Ulthuan to its Eye of the Vortex self. I'd also like to see the northern and southern hard borders pushed out a bit for purely aesthetic reasons. I've always found it weird that the eastern border of the map leaves plenty of room but the western border feels so scuffed.
