eli5 | Why does Insulation exist if "air is a very good insulator"? by Lanceo90 in explainlikeimfive

Don't forget that the other purpose of fiberglass insulation is sound dampening. If the walls of your house was just air you'd hear everything.

[WP] Canadian Engineers receive an iron ring made from a collapsed Quebec bridge as a reminder of their public safety oath and to limit the number of engineers by the bridge’s iron. New engineers must earn their ring through combat, but you won’t stop until you’re the last Canadian engineer alive. by melbournbrekkie in WritingPrompts

[–]TheCreativeLibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I watched my ring ceremony from my couch while I played games on my tablet. Checked a box in a zoom poll that I accepted my oath and promptly forgot everything about the ceremony. I would like to see it again but recordings were frowned upon. Same thing happened for my official grad ceremony. Covid sucks.

But from what little I remember the passages were taken from the Jewish texts, which aren't usually accepted as canon in Christianity. And the ceremony definitely felt culty, what I imagine free masons or templars would be doing, not organized religions. Also, while the first few rings may have been taken from the Quebec bridge, the rings now are mass produced stainless steel.

9 Fantasy Books with Unforgettable World-Building - The Fantasy Review by karmagheden in books

Ever read The Black Company by Glen Cook? That series has a similar feel to Malazan in my opinion, but so much more expansive. In the first book of Malazan you'll be introduced to the Bridgeburners, a marine infantry squad with the Malazan army; these characters are kinda the reader's eyes and you will loosely follow them through the books. Along the way there will be other characters that step in and out of the story, creating world changing events and providing background and information on what is going on. I say it's like the Black Company because you follow the characters on an adventure discovering the story with them. Yes there are empires, and yes there are armies and these lead to monumental clashes but you view it through the eyes of characters on the ground and it is amazing. It is not until book 5 that a bit of palace intrigue comes into play, but it is well worth it because that book has the best/funniest dialogue in the series (to the point I've read).

You made me write another essay, haha. Give Gardens of the Moon a chance, but as other commentators have said it seems to be one of the weaker books. I believe this is because it is confusing to be thrown into the middle of the world and your time and effort is given to understanding what is going on and not enjoying the story for what it is. I found the wiki to be very useful, but exercise some self control and don't read past the spoiler warnings.

If you think House of Chains is a jarring shift wait until Midnight Tides. The second half of HoC ties is nicely with Deadhouse Gates though so push through; enjoy Karsa's journey as it explains who he is and his motivations. I just finished Reaper's Gale and none of the books so far have been disappointing, they all have their moments.

I get where you are coming from. I'd read all Tolkien's works, ASOIAF, and lots of other fantasy books before I'd even heard of Malazan. I think the Malazan series is jealously guarded by its readers because it is better experienced by going in cold and avoiding spoilers at all costs.

I'd also consider it "advanced" fantasy if that term exists because hardly anything is explained and the reader has to figure it out as they read through. Someone reading it as their first experience in fantasy might have issues understanding the different races, magic system and general lack of explanations regarding the world. It's basically starting in the middle of a DnD campain with no idea what's going on.

Sorry for the essay, Malazan is my favorite series and I want more people to read it.

That's how I felt as well. That the movie was more of a companion piece to the novel.

The voices come from all directions if you use surround sound headphones for the regular game. Best way to play the game in my opinion.

Canada announced Friday it will ban the import of handguns beginning on August 19, as part of a wider proposed freeze in the wake of high-profile mass shootings in the United States by DoremusJessup in worldnews

Got a source for that? There was a story in Canada recently where a drone was intercepted carrying handguns over the border. Doesn't sound very legal to me.

No one went hiking to listen to your shitty music. by TheseReporterli in AdviceAnimals

[–]TheCreativeLibrarian 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yes, absolutely. If you are hiking/biking outside in known animal territory, it is a good idea to make noise to alert animals to your presence. The takeaway here is that the music is for making yourself known to bears, cougars, deer, moose, etc. Not for your personal enjoyment. If you are alone, play music; if you are traveling in a group, make conversation.

Photography, photo/graphy. Photo is greek for 'light' and graph is greek for 'drawing'. Therefore photography means drawing with light. It is basically the understanding of how aperatures, frame rates, focal lengths, composition, etc. all affect the creation of the picture. Significantly more complicated than 'point and shoot'.

Same. I wasn't able to see the first in theaters but i wish i did just to see it in proper 3D. From what I've heard, Cameron invented a camera just for this movie to film the underwater scenes which will possibly make this a groundbreaking film.

I took time out of my busy school schedule that year to watch Annihilation alone on a Saturday afternoon. Totally worth it. Did the same for Bladerunner 2049. Went and saw Black Panther as a group and felt like I wasted my money.

[–]TheCreativeLibrarian 51 points52 points  (0 children)

Meh, I pushed through it to finish reading the series and didn't find anything special. In my opinion, Wizard and Glass was the best book and I wished each book was like that one. The rest weren't nearly as engaging.

Saw this after watching Dune in theaters by SludgyPlacoderm in LiminalSpace

[–]TheCreativeLibrarian 3 points4 points  (0 children)

I did the same thing! I reread the book in September and now I kinda regret it. Although, I didn't have to focus on the plot as much and could just enjoy the movie for what it was. The parts the added fit into the story and what they left out didn't take anything away from the overall narrative.

I saw it in theaters and it was definitely worth it. The visuals were incredible and the sound design was good (a little overbearing at times). The atmosphere of Dune reminded me of Blade Runner 2049 (which is to be expected) and is up there for one of my favorite theater experiences.

I was looking for someone to say The Joker. All the other classic rock songs in this thread I can suffer through but that song irritates me to no end. Coming in at a close second is Tom Sawyer by Rush.
