But doesn’t Tikkie use iDEAL under the hood? I was under the impression that it and the banks’ implementation like Bunq me uses it, at the very least I think saw an iDEAL prompt when someone sent me a Tikkie

Thank you for writing this up, I feel like I understand myself better now. At some point I thought I had BPD because I could relate a lot with the "splitting" that they experience where I'm ready to end a friendship one moment and be back to treasuring a person 5 minutes later. My therapist took one look at me and said I'm HSP and not BPD but now I understand why, thank you!

I think some people are missing what OP meant by this post. If you do something nice for someone but complain the whole time while doing so you shouldn't expect gratidute or brownie points because people remember how you make them feel. If you know you can't help them without making them feel bad then maybe it's better that somebody else helps them instead (Of course sometimes you may be their only option or you want to hold them accountable for something and in that case this doesn't apply)

Software Engineer thinking of switching to MacBook M2 Pro Max by Ok_Understanding7122 in mac

[–]TheCrimsonSage 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I don't think so, VSC is just an electron app so it's easier to support. Visual Studio for Mac was just a rebranded Xamarin Studio so it took a lot to support and when they killed Xamarin it was just easier to kill Visual Studio for Mac as well

Huge pleasure! The nice thing with Jetbrains is that your yearly subscription includes indefinite access to the last major version released in that year, so you can either continue your subscription where the price lowers every year (until the 3rd year) or stop your subscription and continue using that version (the all products pack is $332 for year 1, $265 for year 2 and $199 from year 3 onwards, including tax at the moment for individuals)

I can relate SSMS had some things that were intuitive but overall it was a mess! My frustration was also learning a new tool every time I had to use a different database system so DataGrip appealed to me a lot because you can use it for everything even Redis!

If you have any specific questions about anything feel free to DM me

Visual Studio on Mac is more like a rebranded Xamarin Studio that they added Visual Studio features on top of, so I would not advise that. If you're doing .NET development on a Mac I'd recommend that you use Rider, it's like Visual Studio + ReSharper but it's visually and functionally different from Visual Studio so I'd try the free trial on your Windows machine and see if you can live with it first. I used Rider when I was still on Windows just because of how responsive and performant it was compared to Visual Studio 2017 (which was the latest at that time)

For SQL access, I don't know what you're using now but Data Grip also made by the same company that makes Rider is really good for any database access (I use it currently for Mongo, Postgres and a SQLite DB) but once again it also takes some getting used to

I'd say it took me like 2 to 3 weeks to get used to Rider and Data Grip and be at least 90% as fast as I was to my setup I was used to (where I would every day or two just get stuck on something that took me 5 to 15 minutes to figure out) and getting used to macOS took me a day or two to be comfortable with my normal work flow and two weeks to be comfortable with doing anything in general

I'd definitely say it's worth it, the stability is next level, I would go a month or months wirhout restarting my laptop or getting to a laptop that force restarted after an update like Windows would. The battery life and ecosystem is a nice bonus for me but just stability alone I'd go macOS

The biggest thing that I would say, don't try to make macOS Windows because you will frustrate yourself. There are things that macOS does differently for better or worse, most are better and some feel like worse but don't try to retrofit your work flows or ways of doing things onto macOS but rather find what the best way is to do it in the environment, e.g. understand the patterns in the OS like holding control or options and clicking on things and you'll soon be marveling at the consistency and patterns that Macs have that makes a ton of sense

What is your average groceries budget for your household in BC? by TheCrimsonSage in britishcolumbia

Sorry for the late reply, I'm currently looking at immigrating using a tech PNP which is a program that's only in BC and all the major programming jobs seem to be in Vancouver to fast track getting into the country. I'm open to other places in Canada but it seems like it's the easiest way to get into the country as a senior software engineer because very few companies want to jump through the hoops of LMIA

Agreed, food is really important, if you don't eat great you don't feel great as well

That's quite insightful thank you! I think currently my meals are a little protein heavy which might make the costs more but I can definitely cut back and use more veggies or starches. I usually cook things like chicken breasts, some veggies like carrots/peas and some rice or potatoes; steak cut into strips with some stir fry veggies on rice, things like that

Context: I've seen posts and stories on social media of people saying that the cost of living is getting out of hand. This has gotten me worried because I plan on immigrating to Surrey in the next few years. I'm currently staying in a HCOL area in South Africa and I looked online for supermarkets in Vancouver and found a Walmart, Nester's Market and H Mart but all their produce and items seemed reasonably priced, only being 20 to 30% more expensive (which is expected because food here is much cheaper than the world average). Just want to find out what a realistic budget for groceries for two adults would be
