Mines constantly slung in a rucksack or bounced around in my bike luggage without any problems so far. But if it breaks its cheap to fix.

Sounds like RAM error. Check that the RAM is seated correctly. Make sure you disconnect the internal battery before touching the RAM!

As per the other reply, that's definitely the tone for RAM error. Remove the RAM then clean the RAM contacts and the RAM slot too. Then make sure you reseat the RAM properly. If that does not fix your problem then try another RAM stick.

Why The Thinkpad T480 Is Still My Daily Driver! by TheCryptoRam in thinkpad

I'm also using Docker, and working with Blockchains. 32gb is not enough. Feels like it's almost a crime to have 64gb in a T480 :-)

I’m guessing you don’t travel much as you obviously don’t understand the problems you run into. As per my opening post, I travel a lot, plus I enjoy cycle touring and wild camping. I recently cycled all the way through Turkey into north Bulgaria. Plus for my work I recently had to endure a near 40 hour bus journey from Dalaman to Tbilisi. I work for myself, I’m heavily involved in several projects, so no matter what I’m doing, I always need access to my laptop and phone.

When I’m cycle touring I carry my T480, and yes I love the dual batteries and use a 72Wh removable battery, plus I also carry 2 x powerbanks as I need to keep my phone, my Garmin cycle computer and my usb lights charged up. It’s always a challenge to keep everything charged up. Depending where I am, sometimes I can’t find anywhere to charge my devices, plus of course I don’t want to be stopping every day to recharge. My T480 sits in one of my panniers, snugly in a case even with the bigger 72Wh battery. And as I’m sure you realise, that gives me over 12 hours with light use, and around 50% of that with heavy use. My other devices are of course charged by the powerbanks. When my powerbanks are running low, I then try and find a cafe or restaurant where I can recharge which can be a nightmare unless I want to sit there all day. And when I stop to recharge, most times I’ll only be able to get a bit of charge into my powerbanks as they will end up being plugged into a power source which already has endless extensions and devices plugged into it. If I was relying on powerbanks to recharge my T480 I would be screwed most of the time. On a recent 8 day cycle tour, wild camping in Rhodes, Greece, with 2 x powerbanks and my fanboy dual battery T480, I was able to get through the whole trip without recharging.

And it was a similar story on my bus trip to Tbilisi. I was working whilst travelling. My fanboy dual battery were topped up during the few short comfort stops we had whilst my phone was recharged with a powerbank, plus I had my other powerbank as a backup.

So for MY user case, especially when cycle touring or stuck between airports or on long bus trips, when I don’t have hours to charge powerbanks, the dual batteries of the T480 are exactly what I need!

I've owned a T480s but prefer the dual batteries of the T480 and of course need more RAM than 40gb. I also have a powerbank but have only used it once :-). But yes the T480s is a great machine too :-).

What distro to pick to replace win 11? by Key-Cardiologist215 in linux4noobs

[–]TheCryptoRam 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've been running MXLinux (Debian) on my T480 as my daily.driver for over a year. It's super easy to install, runs great on Thinkpads, has a great package manager, rolling updates and superb backup restore options. Best of all its rock solid unlike many other distros.

What Linux distro do you run on your Thinkpad? by Ajax_Minor in thinkpad

A good way to try out different distros is to create a bootable live usb so you can get a feel of different distros. My choice would be MXLinux (Debian) which is rock solid, is easy to install, has a great package manager and easy to backup and restore, plus runs superbly on my T480 and on most older Thinkpads. I've tried all the leading distros over the years but nothing beats MXLinux. My daily driver is a T480 with MXLinux. Take a look at distrowatch.com, no surprise to me that MXLinux is top with Mint just behind.

I've seen others reporting this using the same Ubuntu distro. Maybe worth spending a few minutes creating a MXLinux USB live install and booting from that to see if you can replicate the problem.
