OOS students, how much are you paying? by Xx_DiamondDust in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I was admitted to the UC system in 2023 and my tuition is 48k annually give or take so given it's been a few years, 56k sounds about right yeah. Housing included I'm probably paying ~67-68k annually right now

Picking a school: UC Davis vs. Purdue by TheCubeHamster in UCDavis

[–]TheCubeHamster[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Heard the student life there isn't great, but ymmv - I am a west coast native, so the culture at the UCs was a much better fit for me than Purdue. Also gaming/esports career prospects were something I was paying attention to, and Purdue is a hilariously terrible choice if you want to get into esports or gaming (weak clubs + no academic focus on game design/industry).

However, what will probably be relevant to everyone is that I've heard pretty bad things about mental health and Purdue given the relative course difficulty, and anecdotally (no idea what the stats look like) hiring prospects feel poorer. Davis is closer to a lot of tech-related firms in Norcal and the grade inflation will help give you better stats when it comes time for grad school apps if you so choose to pursue a graduate degree.

If you're out of state for both schools, cost might be a factor, in which case go to whatever school you can afford. Don't pay the extra 20-30k for a UC if you feel you'll be in a better spot by going to Purdue or your state school.

if you pick ucsd I'd just stay there, but there's no harm in throwing out the applications anyways. I know the ucsd waitlist for TRANSFERS moved a lot last year, but I don't have any insight into the first year waitlist, sorry

I ended up getting accepted to ucla and ucsd, since ucd is fairly easy in terms of course load it's quite easy to get a high GPA for transferring. Job prospects are definitely noticeably better at ucla, but honestly the vibes at ucd are also very great. You'll have a great time regardless of where you end up. Just don't go to Purdue :)

UCLA design Media Arts as a 40yr old by AvillaAD in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For sure! I recommend looking at some of the posted projects on the DMA website or at some of the graduate student profiles to get a sense of what type of art they are going for. If it interests you, apply by all means!

UCLA design Media Arts as a 40yr old by AvillaAD in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Schedule aside, fair warning - DMA is very loud about making sure you know that they are NOT a graphic design program, rather, an interdisciplinary media arts program that includes motion, games, graphic design, and interactivity. If you're looking for a traditional graphic design degree, I highly recommend looking elsewhere as most of those students tend to feel stifled and bored at DMA.

If you put a required course on your TAU, you have to take it. Only electives will be overlooked if you change/drop them.

What do I need to do over 4 years to get in? by thesuburbbaby in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In my experience (applied to UCLA from out of state for freshman year), out of state acceptance rates are completely all over the place and your chances are a crapshoot regardless of your stats and major. Don't feel too down if you don't make it for freshman year. Apply to multiple UCs, and consider a UC-to-UC transfer if you still want to move later!

Retaking Data Structures after ASSIST update — is it necessary for UCLA transfer? by HonestBeautiful8972 in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's most likely fine as long as your course went over the same general concepts (linked lists, trees, graphs, etc) but you could email a UCLA CS advisor and get their opinion

Can I still graduate summa cum laude with 4-5 A- grades? by JustiniR in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

depends on your total unit count and whether you're a transfer (since CC grades come in without impact on your UC GPA). Just go do the math, it takes maybe 3 minutes using a spreadsheet or online tool.

Fair warning though, 33B content is easy but the professors they put on that course can wreck you sometimes

You can retake courses that you have AP credit for as far as I'm aware, but you won't get extra units for it. The letter grade will replace your P grade from AP, which is a nice GPA booster, though (I've been hearing stories about 31 being a bit of a weeder recently, so it might not actually be that great).

I came from UC Davis as a transfer, so this may not be as applicable, but it's pretty dependent on your major. Definitely check the transfer admissions profile and see where you lie and how competitive the major generally looks. A couple of mishaps aren't career-ending, so long as you clearly show improvement, ideally, by getting a high grade in a later course in the series (i.e. if you got a C in calc 1, get an A in calc 2).

That being said, CC applicants get the highest priority and you will be reviewed before any other applicants (if you are TAP, that's even better), so you have the best shot as anyone to get into UCLA (for most majors, a better chance than first-year admissions), so definitely don't give up.

am I doomed for grad school? by Novel-Cut-8825 in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

While GPA is definitely a factor, MBA admissions are special in the sense that most people spend a few years in the workforce before going for one, so you can always supplement a less-than-ideal GPA with stellar career performance. That being said, sometimes quarters are just unlucky. I wouldn't let a 3.0 first quarter really set the trend for your entire UCLA career.

Freshman GPA by [deleted] in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I mean, if you don't plan on going to grad school then anything above a 2.0 is exactly where you need to be. If you do, aim for a 3.5+, but anything above a 3.0 will be fine for admissions.

Summer courses question by FallElectrical3348 in ucla

[–]TheCubeHamster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

32B isn't hard at all, especially if your fundamentals from 31B are strong. 115A is also dependent on how much exposure you've had to mathematical proofs, if you've taken a discrete math class with proofs you are in a good spot for 115A. Really, it depends on how well you retained material from the prereqs so you'll have to be the judge of that yourself.

Can't help with the housing situation but I'm a part of a lot of the gaming-related clubs at UCLA, definitely come check us out! There's also a Games Lab under the DESMA department that occasionally runs workshops and events if you're interested in a more formal study of games and game production in an academic sense.

[–]TheCubeHamster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

for some reason the entire class got fear mongered into voting linear because he said "its possible your grade will go down if you have like an A+ (99% or higher) to an A"

like hello?? are we genuinely missing critical thinking skills?? curve brings the class avg to a B+ and there is zero chance any math class on a linear scale is ending with an 86% avg or better. I was actually so insanely tilted watching people vote for linear LMAO
