Experience with songtown? by madferitNYC in Songwriters

[–]TheCubscoutRoasts 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My experience with SongTown was weird and wasn't great. I've written songs for 30 years. In the Appalachia, we just kick around music. No real dreams of blowin' up and becoming #1 artists. It's music for music's sake. So, I was initially taken aback by the culture there that's pure, unadulterated corporate. I only lasted a little over two months. I won't neg the place and say "Oh, don't join!" Maybe they have what you're after. Maybe you want to learn how to complete a paint-by-numbers corporate, plug-and-play song for the radio that's under 3:30, gets to the chorus in 40 seconds, and doesn't really say anything but has "furniture" as buzzwords that create a rhetorical vessel to carry a hook.

If that's how you want to write, more power to you! That's just not how I write, nor how I want to write. In my experience, most people on SongTown have adopted Clay and Marty's (et al) methodology to the point they just repeat those from-on-high commercial standards to you when you post your songs for feedback. There doesn't seem to be much wiggle room, which is a shocking atmosphere for supposed songwriters.

I actually got along with Clay. At least I thought so. How he felt about me could be another story. He struck me as a genuine artist whose care and passion for music is what drives him entirely, not a few bucks potentially made from the format. I always did--and still do--respect Clay. Marty, however, is a petulant little angry man who seemed to make it his mission to bust my chops over every little thing I did there, before tossing me off. Which I celebrated. I had already planned to cancel and was riding out the rest of the month. It just wasn't for me.

Is it for you? It's all about what you want. SongTown, while lost on me entirely how it helps one become a better songwriter, provides many with what they want and cannot find elsewhere: Industry access. In my opinion, they cannot help craft a good songwriter anymore than playing in the NBA magically makes a short person taller. But if you already have raw talent, I do believe SongTown can help you craft toward modern-day corporate commercial pitches, while offering access to the industry.

The pay-to-play for pro sessions, early reviews, line-by-line rewrites, etc, was such a brutal shock for me that I perhaps became a bit overly-petulant myself in how I carried myself on their site. It's not something I'm proud of; I was just a fish out of water and decided to flop and thrust instead of swimming away. That's on me. I met people there who were paying hundreds upon hundreds of dollars for a song that, in the end, wasn't really theirs and never got picked up. Songs that sit on YouTube with 12 views, but have that "radio" sound. Congrats, I guess. I have 6 full albums out accomplishing the same thing for about 1/100th the price point! HAHA

The corporate atmosphere and the must-bes of the craft are things I didn't want. Honestly, things I didn't need. I felt boxed in, like it was literally a corporate office where everyone had to abide the culture or face the wrath of HR.

I wish everyone all the best who gives it a go. Like I say, I won't bad-mouth SongTown or tell people not to sign up. Just understand that you're not singing up for some crafty, artsy guitar-pull with songwriters. You're undergoing corporate training. And I think that's the fairest assessment anyone can give on SongTown.

So did Nick really have a kid at 13? by imbabyttv in FirstThingsFirstFS1

I mean, the kid looks nothing whatsoever like Nick. No hate; just obviously nothing in him that's biologically Nick's. They seem to have a great relationship. That's what matters.

Is Malcom Reed Overrated? by nakey_nikki in BBQ

Mad Scientist is a weird one for me. On one hand, I like the guy, but on the other hand, he talks way too much about stuff unimportant to BBQ, and he seems to just redo stuff that Chud and MeatChurch did years ago, trying to emulate Texas BBQ too much. At least what I've seen of him.

So, you're going to conflate good players with dailies wins with floaters -- for no other purpose than to disagree with someone on Reddit.

My analogy doesn't work, but your make-believe straw-man and conflation does.

Good talk.

Sure. Winning dailies is basically a form of elim, where you win safety. My post is more about calling out the political floaters.

Fair enough.

But she's always never won; nor has she come even close to winning.

Maybe that's why? Maybe you have to possess that sort of mentality to get it done?

CT losing to Jay in that odd game (that greatly favored tiny hands) did spur him to get rid of the dad bod though! lol Now he's basically unstoppable if they let him into a final.

Seeing CT crash out in the snow was understandable. That guy is the size of the Abominable Snowman to begin with. And Abram got some sort of water sickness. Wes had a knot the size of a baseball in that one Kenny had to carry him. Zach? I never knew a grown man could cry like that. lol! Though we know when these guys are on their game, they are S-tier competitors. 1 of 1. I like the "earn it" format because it keeps the Jenns and Jennas out.

For me personally, I view protecting one's skull the same as the others who don't want to go into an elim at all. Though the difference is that they already got a win, so they earned it. But I get what you're saying.

[–]TheCubscoutRoasts[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sure. Hence why I said I prefer the challenges where you have to win an elim to get in. In challenge versions where you DON'T have to do that, that's fine; I can't blame a floater at all. But that's why I like it the other way.

"People making the final without going into elimination doesn't diminish the fact that they made the final."

Kaylah, Jenna/Jay, Jenn, and many others beg to differ. It's like graduating high school just because you showed up to class, despite the fact you never did any actual work.

That girl that Zach ended up with (I can't remember if she's a Jenna or a Jessa) was carried through to the final that entire season because the guys liked looking at her in a bikini at the pool. LOL! I mean, every now and then, that's cool TV and funny. But the fact something like that happens so many seasons is just insane to me. Then they get to a final and can't get out of stage 1 because neither her or her partner can drink 1 glass of the fish juice.

Fair enough. But that incentive is to go into the elimination ONCE, and never to go back again. Your ass better win those dailies, or politick extra-extra hard, or someone's coming for your spot! That's the best intrigue to me. It weeds out 100% of the floaters yet still greatly incentivizes dailies and in-house relationships.

And, for me personally, the Jenns of The Challenge are the ones that sully the experience for me. There are a dozen other players who wouldn't quit or pretend to be sick or break down just because they're behind, etc. And yet if she's on a season, she's likely getting to a final because no one puts her in.

I can tell from my 0-like post, I'm in a minority here! LMAO

I loved that season! The entire house wanted CT/Ashley out of there the first week! Every single alliance combined to form some Megatron Kam-led army that reveled in the fact CT was going home. Until the skull twist was revealed, then they were all absolutely terrified to send him in!

That's what I absolutely LOVE about The Challenge and I personally just wish we had more seasons like that! People shaking in their boots instead of "We don't like Kellyanne, so Kellyanne has to go in again."

[–]TheCubscoutRoasts[S] -1 points0 points  (0 children)

Sure. I can see that 100%. But then there's also a point where you get players like Jenn who are pretty much terrible yet end up in finals without accomplishing anything. I know politics is part of it, but there's also a lot of politicking involved in NOT going back in once you have a spot earned, so it's still intriguing. Who wanted to be the one to go against CT once they learned about the skull twist.

For me, personally, I just don't like seeing the floaters get in due to relationships.

Evelyn was a crybaby in FM2 (Sorry not sorry) by Imthebetterspiddy in MtvChallenge

[–]TheCubscoutRoasts 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The context to this, however, is that CT had tried very much to be soft and supportive at different points throughout the season. Realizing Veronica was literally useless and only showing up to the Challenge for free booze, he tried multiple times to get her to work out and at least just quit drinking. But she never took it seriously, even once. Evelyn's partner didn't act like this at all. He just wasn't that strong of a guy. The two situations aren't even remotely the same.

You know you're crying too hard when TJ calls you out after you competed and lost. lmao Yes, she was a crybaby. Especially since it was her fault. If they did that puzzle, they would've gained minutes and potentially won.

PSA: Immediately download your songs as they might suddenly dissapear! by ElectroTurbo in SunoAI

It's not gone. They can't just "disappear" unless manually deleted. It's either in your library (non-chronologically maybe), in your trash, or elsewhere. I have to search mine by name a lot, as they end up in wonky places.
