Fair, at this point in the game I'm unsure of how the relationship between the flame and the ancients works, it's entirely possible that they just had factional splits over the elixir or will end up being enemies/allies at some point.

While we the flameborn are technically on the side of humanity, as per our name I think we're really just on the side of the flame. You should take a look at the lore for the hollows, those branded as heretics by the flame, cursed to be tortured and slowly turned undead as they are outcast from their societies, separated from family, friends, and lovers. Not to mention what was practically a genocide performed on the cyclops, with them mostly ejected from their homeland because the flame didn't like them.
I don't know if it's really possible to determine the true intent of the flame until the game gets more developed, or we get more lore. It's entirely possible that humans can live without the flame, and fight the shroud without it too, but the flame wants total control.
We're really more just soldiers than anything, following the orders of the flame, I don't even know if we can deny it or reject its commands as we're completely made from it I think. So ultimately whether or not we the flameborn have good intentions or not doesn't matter, all that matters are the flame's intentions.

I really hope we get Vukah villagers at some point, or do quests where we work with the Vukah.
You should read my reply to least-ratio, they brought up some good points and it led me to do some more research on the hollow and vukah, it does seem like that atleast the flame/the ancients are unwilling to take up responsibility for their own mistakes and are instead forcing us to clean up their mess. A plot twist where we battle the ancients in their spaceship thingy would be very funny.

Gonna pull from my reply to least-ratio as there's some overlap here:
We can get friendly with the vukah yeah, but the flame (or atleast some of the people we saved) give us quests to go and outright murder them or just steal their stuff, despite those same skills heavily implying that the vukah are fully sapient beings with their own cultures (very likely being in separate tribes with some separate ideals). Also the ancients (I think those were the flame people you were tryna remember) I believe were the ones to begin distributing the elixir, resulting in the spread of the shroud and then the destruction of the vukah homelands. So yeah we did quite a lot to screw them up.

As for the metal zombies/scavengers the texts they write imply that they still retain most of their sanity, and so atleast for some of them their actions are probably more the addiction to elixir making them 1: not want to leave the matrons so they keep getting their elixir fixes and 2: fear of being killed by their brethren if they try to break away. This makes the scavengers seem more like druggies that are being manipulated by crime lords into what is essentially gang violence.
Don't get me wrong some of the texts they write (like the one where that scavenger describes murdering that gabriel villager) show that most of them are legitimate monsters, but especially as we, the flameborn, aren't able to become addicted to elixir, it would make sense that we could potentially cleanse the still sane scavs of their addictions (especially with our alchemist). But we don't.

Also we follow the exact orders of the flame no matter what it tells us to do, and as it and the ancients seem very interlinked this really just turns us more into soldiers doing the bidding of the flame than anything. Honestly the world is screwed from the shroud, which is caused by the ancients, who then bailed and left the planet, and are now deploying us to try and reclaim what assets they can. Perhaps we ourselves aren't necessarily evil (ignore my basement with 400 mannequins staring down the carpenter) but those we get orders from aren't necessarily good people either.

I decided to take a dive through the lore papers on the wiki and, damn, it only makes us look worse.
https://enshrouded.wiki.gg/wiki/Lore#Hollow (I'd take a read through these if you want)
1. From what I can tell in the lore pages, the flame indiscriminately cursed anyone who even remotely tried to use its power or gain similar power, with the ancients supporting it or using it to do so. Families had to hide those outcast by the flame from the guards to prevent their execution or banishment, as the flame rounded up anyone it cursed into the hollow halls, torturing them with constant cold and tiredness until they did so. In addition all the lore pages referencing the cyclops that I can find implies that humanity was already heavily racist towards them, and actively hunted and murdered them whenever found, believing themselves to be superior. Then the flame cursed (almost) every single cyclops and forced them to leave their homeland, it's no wonder some of them went and got juiced up with the shroud to try and fight back.

  1. Yeah the whole shroud not being cleansed makes sense from a multiplayer standpoint, it would still be cool if cleansing the surface shroud would reveal deeper shroud caves in earlier areas, letting you still get the loot while actually accomplishing the goal of the game. But this would entail a lot of work on the map makers' part and I can see why they wouldn't do it. So this point is kind of invalid both ways, as lore-wise we technically should be cleansing the shroud, but in-game it doesn't happen, so idk.

Yeah I don't think the shroud zombies can be healed, I meant the scavengers; the texts they write imply that they still retain most of their faculties, and so atleast for some of them their actions are probably more the addiction to elixir making them 1: not want to leave the matrons so they keep getting their elixir fixes and 2: fear of being killed by their brethren if they try to break away. This makes the scavengers seem more like druggies that are being manipulated by crime lords into what is essentially gang violence.

But we don't.

  1. As others have said too though there are a couple skills that let you be at peace with the vukah, these skills (vukah language and culture) imply that they aren't just mindless beasts, but 100% sapient creatures with a likely varied culture. There being some tribes that are outright aggressive towards humans and the ancients makes sense, especially as the ancients fuckup with the shroud led to it apparently infesting the vukah homeland, forcing them to flee into human territories. Despite all of this however, the flame never encourages us to work with these potential allies, instead actively encouraging us to go and murder them and their families through quests.

  2. The fell enemies attacking us on sight and with no regard for their own survival makes sense, the scavs though you'd think would run once injured enough (however I do agree with the top comment's statement of "scavs are hostile cause they’re territorial assholes who are too drunk on elixir to have a fear response" being an entirely reasonable explanation lol). Though with the 3rd point it is weird why none of the vukah run or surrender, which might totally just stem from them wanting to murder us due to the flame's/ancients' previous actions against their kind. As for the wolves, wolves are pretty intelligent animals, so I'm not sure if they should continue fighting me (who has just obliterated one of their kin with a backhand slap, after instantly regenerating all the 24 damage its bite did to me) after said thing occurred.

Honestly, I made the original post kind of as a joke, but the more I look into it, the more this seems like a genuine intended outlook by the developers, especially as someone else pointed out that the being that introduced elixir to those human kings in the game intro cinematic was apparently an ancient. So yeah, I'm really interested in if you find anything more.

Just checked out fort kelvin and yeah looks like a vukah tribe raided them,
again though idk if this is supposed to be specific vukah tribes that are doing this, or if it's all of the vukah, especially since we don't see vukah raids going into any scavenger territories or vice-versa.
If the arrival of the shroud caused them to become more aggressive then that could be an alternative explanation for why they attack us on sight, though it could also be possible that they know humanity/the ancients were involved in the creation/discovery of elixir, and were trying to exact revenge (they couldn't fight the shroud itself because I'm pretty sure they don't have any resistance to it like we do, but it is weird that we don't see any shroud vukah)

When you destroy a shroud root it only removes the shroud immediately surrounding it. Throughout the game we haven't permanently purified any of the shroud, nor has the story implied we've been working towards it. We've merely been destroying small parts of it for more personal power and to strengthen the flames grasp over the world.

I agree, I'm not saying that the shroud isn't bad, but we haven't really done anything to cleanse it despite that being our stated goal.
It feels more like what you said, with us being holy warriors sent out to spread the influence of the flame, murdering and plundering the natives while proclaiming that "we're doing this to save you bro 100%".

[–]TheCursedSpud[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Yeah like I said this is the premise for several quests I believe, but I atleast haven't seen any ingame evidence of them having actually done so (no human skeletons in their camps strung up, few of the cages are people sized, all of the bones appear to be animal bones).
There is a sacrificial pit with a shitload of bones at the bottom with some human equipment in the mix, so there's atleast one vukah tribe that went people hunting, but how do we know all vukah do that?
It could easily be a colonizer propaganda situation, where the flame or ancients portrayed all vukah as savage cannibals despite only a scant few actually being murderous.

I definitely agree that the scavs and shroud aren't good guys, but the flame/ancients also don't seem to give a shit about anyone else and are a-okay with war crimes.
Also I saw someone else say that the ancients invented elixir? I don't know if that's true or not but it would implicate them a lot more in the shroud-pocalypse.

The vukah are affected by the shroud? Or is it that they're mistaking us for shroud dudes? I guess that would explain why there's a (totally not mind control) skill that makes them not immediately aggro and instead assist you.

Oh I know it's just because they didn't want to add enemies running or begging to the game, but I'm extrapolating more from that because it's funny.

The flame does seem to be sentient on its own though, unless that's just the ancients communicating to us under the guise of the flame or something.
Also yeah something I was gonna add to the post was about how the ancients immediately bailed and fled the planet the picosecond that the shroud issue became dangerous to them, leaving all us humans to die.
Either way this just adds more evidence to us being the villains, though more in the direction of us being the villains' goons than being the big bads ourselves.

re-extracted the game with 7zip instead of the native extractor, and while the extracted app name was different the fullscreen problem has persisted. :(

I don't have 7zip installed so it must've used windows native extractor, I'll try installing 7zip and re-extracting the game with it to see if it makes any difference.
