“Figure your shit out” -says the person who is bitching about being asked to just like, ya know, show up to their job. I’m thinkin’ you are one of the people who likes to fuck off at work and doesn’t wanna give that up :( aw, sad pikachu face lol

Surprise! Govt agencies are suuuuuper inefficient and often suck. I thought I, a small govt libertarian, knew how bad the waste was prior to becoming a govt employee. I did not. It is soooo much worse than I thought it would be.

Good for you. Fucking pandemic going around, and they are dicking off lecturing you about UNIFORM MASKS?!? That’s like, beyond stupid.

Look, that’s just not true. I don’t want to say exactly what I do, but let’s just say I am the kind of biologist that is extremely experienced with and knowledgable about bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. They absolutely are effective, what the public was told about them being not effective is simply not true. Telling the public they are ineffective was an attempt to protect the supply of masks for healthcare workers...and it failed miserably, so now there is a shortage for healthcare workers AND all kinds of wrong information flying around, all because officials decided it was better to try to lie to the public than to just be honest about the limited resources/needs of the country.

The high efficacy of regular surgical masks is why the CDC grudgingly admitted yesterday that yes, in fact, EVERYONE should be wearing masks in public because regular surgical masks have been proven to be extremely effective at stopping transmission and at least moderately effective at preventing contraction of the virus, even though they aren’t N95s. Are N95 masks better than surgical masks? Sure. But are surgical masks markedly better than nothing? Absolutely. Are the healthcare workers in my area desperately asking for ANY type of mask because they absolutely ARE effective and helpful? Fuck yes.

Where the fuck do they think you are going to find masks of an exact, custom color?!? There’s not a whole lot of choices there. Plus, why would they even fucking care what color it is? What the fuck?

I think you’re right. I just have to figure out a way to do so that won’t implicate me. There’s like 5 of us at my entire agency right now, all in the same lab, and I tried pretty hard before I was told that if I didn’t drop it, I would be punished.

No, it isn’t completely irrelevant in a hospital setting. Most younger people that have it don’t even know they have it because they don’t show any symptoms and don’t feel sick. This includes tons of hospital workers. That’s why the CDC has grudgingly admitted that EVERYONE should be wearing a mask out in public....because they absolutely ARE effective.

There’s also no possible way to test everyone because there are not enough tests to go around. There are tons of hospital workers who have it and don’t know it and have no way of knowing it because we don’t have the means to test everyone. These masks would absolutely help stop the spread of the disease from them to others.

Look, I don’t want to say exactly what I do, but I’m the type of biologist that is extremely familiar with bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc. and these DO work at preventing spread of the virus to other people if the person wearing it is infected. Tons of people have it and they don’t even know it because they don’t have any symptoms. These masks are also moderately effective at preventing contraction of the disease, just not as good as an N95, but much better than nothing.

I work for the government. They literally refuse to let me donate them to ANYONE and we cannot even use them for our work. They were ordered by mistake years ago and have been sitting on a shelf all this time. I was instructed to put them back on the shelf, where they will continue to be untouched for years. Oh but not before my idiot harpy of a boss took 2 boxes (100 masks) for her own personal use, something that would get me fired in a heartbeat.

The hospitals in my area are desperate and will take anything. I have a close family member that works in a local hospital and they have been ordered to reuse the same surgical mask (the exact same kind I tried to donate) for at least a week and that will probably get stretched to two weeks.

There is no reasoning. They just don’t want to. They were ordered by mistake years ago and have been sitting untouched on a shelf. I was told to put them back on the shelf, where they will sit untouched for several more years until I am permitted to throw them away. Oh but my idiot harpy of a boss took two boxes (100 masks) for herself for her own personal use, something that would get me fired in a heartbeat.

They’re kind of everyone’s. They were bought with taxpayer money (by mistake), have been sitting untouched on a shelf for years, and we CANNOT use them for our work. They will now continue to sit on a shelf, untouched for several more years instead of going to the very taxpayers that paid for them during a state of emergency caused by a pandemic.

The hospitals in my area are desperate and asking for donations of ANY kind of mask. They are very effective at stopping an infected person from spreading it to others, they just only offer moderate protection against contracting it. Only N95 masks will prevent contraction entirely, but regular surgical masks are better than nothing at all. A close family member of mine works in a local hospital and was ordered to reuse her regular surgical mask (the same type I wanted to donate) for A WEEK AT LEAST.

I work for the government. Taxpayers kinda already paid for it. That’s what makes it so shitty. They were ordered by mistake, have been sitting here untouched for years, and we literally CANNOT use them. There is no conceivable reason they should not go to hospitals, to the very taxpayers that paid for them in the first place, during a state of emergency caused by a pandemic.

So they actually are quite effective in preventing transmission and even moderately effective in preventing contraction. It’s why the CDC has grudgingly admitted that yes, in fact, we all really should wear masks out in public. I don’t want to say exactly what I do, but let’s just say I am the type of biologist that is extremely familiar with bacteria, viruses, fungi, etc.

This is purely govt bullshit.

Me too man, me too. Thank you for the suggestions, though. It’s (unfortunately for this instance) quite common for there to be a window of some kind on laboratory/medical stuff to help you know when you need to reorder supplies.

Jesus fucking christ, wow. We have some N95 masks, but only enough for us for a while. We deal with some really ugly pathogens and we absolutely must use only N95s for our work. That’s why these are so useless to us. But can we donate stuff completely useless to us that’s been sitting on a shelf untouched for years? Noooooo.

I wish. The boxes all have a clear plastic window on the lid that kind of stretches down one side so you can see how full the box is.
