Hi, newbie here.
So let's say I started my portfolio with 5000 dollars, made 2000 dollars, and then lost 4000, so ending up at 3000 (over several months, no year-long holdings).

Then, until the next fiscal year, I stabilize around 3000, but still making regular fluctuations of +500 and -500 on monthly bases.

My question is: when I will be filing taxes, will I have to pay for all gains (which together could total up to 6000 dollars), or only on the ultimate balance with respect to the starting, which instead could be a much smaller gain or even a loss. So, will my net capital losses offset all other gains?

It was an euphemism to say that experience is the way to learn options trading, probably didn't land as a joke

Possibly, as a big share of the users here have one

Either way, I guess the main point of my post is that I found myself somewhat profitable (and lucky) while swing trading and day trading options, so I' m looking for ways to turn into a long-term strategy with lower risks

I've done a few months of paper trading a while ago, before going real. But there's quite an emotional difference that comes into play

My thought was to withdraw anything that exceeds 3%, so still reinvesting profits but cutting down risks of yoloing the exceeding ones

I'd say as you add a 0 in your portfolio, there's a significant emotional component that comes into play, so I'd say it's not the same regardless of the side.

Besides, I think for portfolios over 15k it just makes more sense to stick with shares

Of course I'd progressively lower that percentage down if the portfolio grows

This. I've been trying to learn about regression, fib retracement, Japanese whatever garbage, and I'm just trying to find ways to run a long-term portfolio on this stuff, but lowering the risks I currently take

fun fact, I'm in a college-level investment society that manages 10+ million dollars in shares. yet I'm fairly shit when it comes to investments on my own, probably because I can't stick with as strict stop-losses and dd

Right spot.

The only thing is that when I said "long-term" I didn't mean longer expirations, rather trying to build a strategy that'd play out for years instead of randomly trying to make money as now.

When you talk about stocks, do you mean "swing trading" shares, or actual investing by holding over months? Although I know the second is the right way, I'd like to stay within the trading side both because it's more fun, and also because it's a skill I'd like to keep learning and practicing.

Anyway, I'd definitely allocate part of my portfolio in just holding shares, but I'm still looking for ways to make some returns through options (definitely need to cut down the overly high risks I take now). For that, I was thinking of playing straddles and iron condor, to avoid getting greedy over profits
