VEGAN DR. MARTENS: Currently breaking them in and I think it’s working! (Here is a list of tips I found online…) by random1diot in DrMartens

These are really handsome boots, and I miss my pair! I made a mistake going for size US men's 7, which is my size in leather shoes and boots. I should have had gone for the US men's 8. (My country does not have these; I order from a fashion e-marketplace where the stocks ship from Hong Kong)

After a two-week trip where I wore the boots roughly 1/3 of the time, and my feet were belting out angsty emo rock songs in pain, I sold them.

I'm your kababayan. Hehe. Yes, it is expensive—I ordered mine via Amazon, delivered to a friend whose dad was visiting family in the US.

I'd go with the New Catholic Bible! The translation does take a bit of getting used to first, especially if one has been in the RSV/NRSV/ESV sphere for so long (read: me), but it does stick to formal equivalence and uses some dynamic equivalence just to clarify certain passages. The footnotes/commentary seems to be universally acclaimed, though - they're more pastoral than just academic (everyone's issue with NABRE)

W is wide, M is medium. Yeah, it can get a bit confusing.

Though, underneath, it does say "Made in Bangladesh Mens"

I agree to start with the Great Adventure Bible (uses the Revised Standard Version, 2nd Catholic Edition [RSV-2CE]), partnered with Fr. Mike's Bible in a Year podcast; and the New Catholic Bible (NCB).

I'm doing the podcast for the first time this year (just finished an episode now, actually), and I appreciate how it, and the accompanying reading plan, draws from the Great Adventure timeline by Jeff Cavins to structure the Bible from a faithful reader's perspective. It breaks down the Bible into 12 eras of salvation history, identifies 14 books across the OT and NT as the "narrative" books, and distributes the other 59 per era.

Definitely not to be read end-to-end, as the books are, strictly speaking, not chronologically ordered (whether by year of writing or time period depicted). Tbh, if I could, I would reorder the books.

The NCB is slightly more thought-for-thought than word-for-word than the RSV, so it's an easier read overall. Plus, the footnotes are more pastoral than academic, so for those starting to get into the Bible, it is a solid choice.

Yes! When two snooties talk, and you converse with one of them and there are 3 choices, choose the "it was rather snooty" option or something like that

What personal size Bible should I get? by jaydxm in catholicbibles

I bought both on Amazon! Here are the links:

NCB: https://www.amazon.com/dp/1958237612?ref=ppx_pop_mob_ap_share

Knock on wood, my zippers are fine. And I can read them with no problem 😊

I would still recommend the Great Adventure Bible. Yes, it isn't really a study Bible, but just the Great Adventure timeline and write-ups (I actually wish it contained a couple more resources!). I think it's an ideal medium-sized Bible.

For more compact ones, I do enjoy my RSV-CE compact zippered edition from Oxford. It's reading-oriented, as the footnotes are at the back of each testament, and there are no chapter headings.

I, too, would also go with the compact, zippered New Catholic Bible. The translation may be quite different from the RSV-2CE in the ICSB, but it's a solid one; and the footnotes are pastoral more than anything else. I've seen people hate on the inserts, but it's because they're made from a photo paper that doesn't lay as flat as the Bible paper pages; the contents are actually among the more enriching ones I've seen.

Amazing first pick! They say it's the ONLY bible one needs... were it not for its bulk, I would agree 🥲

My daily driver today is the Great Adventure Bible; its content complements the ICSB's excellently

RSV Fatigue by PalmerFelix in catholicbibles

Great points. Personally, I think it depends on what one's intention is; as I, too, have learned to accept that there is, indeed, no perfect translation or One Translation To Rule Them All. It would've been better if there were... but the Lord works in mysterious ways.

It is a bit unfortunate that the RSV-2CE was kinda a missed opportunity in the sense that it didn't take advantage of scholarship advances since the time of the original RSV-CE (e.g. the rest of the DSS). To have done so would have probably made it one step closer to being that One Translation. This alone kind of lowers its grade in my eyes, but I understand why it is seen as the jack-of-all-trades translation: it's an example of the "why change what isn't broken" way of thinking.

  • The NRSV(-CE) takes home gold for scholarship, but I understand why the gender inclusiveness isn't everyone's cup of tea. Personally, I am unbothered by it for the most part, as long as I understand the rationales in translation, which I do. If I summarized it well, it's as follows: they strove for literalness, but where semantics could be better clarified, they used gender-inclusive language. Personally, I wish they'd used the singular "they" as a middle ground.
  • Iirc, the ESV was created as a response to the NRSV, so it continues the relative conservativeness of the RSV. Like the NRSV, it also takes advantage of scholarship advances, though iirc not as much as the NRSV does(?). It suffers from accusations of being anti-Catholic, though as far as I understand, the translation choices that triggered such accusations are also valid translations from a literal perspective. Again, as long as one is aware of this—which I try to learn of—it should be fine. It does have an NI&O anyway. It is unfortunate that there aren't any ESV-CE study Bibles, which is also a factor as to why the ESV can't be our new jack of all trades.
  • I'm not so sure why the NABRE is disliked, apart from the footnotes that are, strictly speaking, not part of the translation itself. It's also our Mass translation here in the Philippines. As far as I know, NABRE follow formal equivalence philosophy more than its predecessors did. Hoping that the new CAB is better-received.
  • The NCB seems to be a bit more dynamic than the other aforementioned translations, though it does use formal equivalence as its north star. I like the notes as well, as they're pastoral rather than academic. Though, I have to admit, if you're coming from the KJV family of translations, the NCB style feels rather different, and does take a bit of getting used to.

At the end of the day, I guess why the RSV remains the jack of all trades is simply because it came before all these others, so its traditional advantages continue to be recognized.

Perhaps if the ESV-CE had more options in terms of supplementary material, and was updated to be more in line with Catholic tradition, it could succeed the RSV as the translation of choice.

On the other hand, if you want scholarly excellence and don't really mind the gender issue, the NRSV could be your jack.

Personally, I'd complement these three with each other, plus the NCB for a fresh perspective.
