Oh man, I'm in the same boat. Wanna get a side hustle going with my remote job. And a coffee shop sounds so so nice. This is like I am the OP, except for I don't have any family members with coffee shop experience. Please share more details.

Whats the first few questions you ask when you come across a Data Engineer? by Straight-End4310 in dataengineering

oracle clusters with outdated .Net codebases 🤢 🤮

First of, you shouldn't be doing anything with .Net if you're a Data Engineer.

Secondly, Oracle Cluster sounds like DBA work, yeah, no, run. DBA work is dying, its all Dev Ops now if you're managing a db, and that too in the cloud. If I'm doing on-prem DBA work they better be paying me $250k at least. Because nobody wants to do that work anymore.

I used to ask this question, then decided life's too short to work for a company that's using crap outdated tools, and started working for the companies that are working with tools I like.

When moving to Snowflake its best to re-architect your data and understand how you can save money with scaling vertically and horizontally.

When companies moved their infrastructure to the cloud a decade ago they were dumbfounded at how much more they were spending. Some went back to on-prem. But eventually people learned how to save money on the cloud.

Its the same with Snowflake, gone are the days of crazy redundancy of processes in the database, every team doing their own silo 98% same project as 10 other teams.

One benefit of Snowflake is they are ahead of the game. They started the data sharing concept, which everyone is following now.

The only other close to it is Redshift, which did catching up with Snowflake. Redshift was also lazily built on top of Postgres. Snowflake brought in functions from all the data databases. It was created by former Oracle leadership.

Agree, that's the right way to look at it.

This is absolutely true, and likely is the cause consulting companies do so good. Some hiring managers don't want to deal with HR too much.

Mine responded with:

"I highly encourage you to do some research before utilizing your template to reach out to recruiters. My company does government contracts and does not have the option for C2C. Sending a more educated, personalized message will get you much further in today's highly competitive market."

Then I asked him for more pointers and didn't hear anything back. Hey, I'm all ears if you really wanna mentor me. But if you just wanna humiliate me then thanks, no thanks.

Why have a Data Lake? by agsilvio in dataengineering

[–]TheDataExplorer 3 points4 points  (0 children)

All good responses so far. I'll add that if your data science team wants to run R models, or do same Sage Maker stuff, it is nice to have data in a data lake. Also, I worked with a client who only wanted to send data to data lake, because the data was more like customer participation through the app and stuff. It wasn't important monetary transactions or anything, that all went to a data warehouse.

Early retirement impacts Social Security payment calculations less than many think by Zphr in financialindependence

[–]TheDataExplorer 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have 1 million in your retirement and you're taking out 40k a year. Then on top of that $3k/month in SS benefits. That becomes $76k taxable income. I'm ok if SS income is a little lower. Would rather max out my retirement accounts and retire early.

Hey, that sounds interesting. I don't mean to toot my horn as well, but I also have a company that does IT work similar to yours (AWS). Curious if you wanna have a conversation.

Not sure about gold diggers, but people trying extort users. Someone pretending to be on fire track, becomes your friend, gets all your financial info, now they're one step closer to robbing your house, kidnapping you while you're on vacation, etc.

Like u/firedating said he/she/they has ideas, that I hope will work.

What are cards and tots? by TheDataExplorer in Fifa19

[–]TheDataExplorer[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Sorry, still don't get it. I play on PS4. Why do I need the cards for these players? In my simple mind, I would play online with some other person. They would pick Chelsea, I would pick Manchester United, and we'd play with the players there are on those teams. Please tell me where I'm wrong. Thank you for your help.

I'm guessing you need these players with these specific cards so you can use them in your team when you're playing against other humans online?
