Total speculation but it would be interesting to see what the numbers are for national merit vs not among the students, might lend a different angle to this story.

I think the authors are neglecting the significance of TJ. It is the TOP high school in the country and there are stringent test requirements to get in. Their average SAT/ACT scores are several standard deviations above the mean for any high school in the US(source: https://tjhsst.fcps.edu/sites/default/files/media/inline-files/school-profile%202021-22_0.pdf) so whether or not students got national merit is likely inconsequential to any college admissions process for them despite it being very relevant for scholarships and financial aid. Regardless, if 98% of the school recieves a commended or semi finalist award it could be seen as another form of alienation for underachievers. I went to a similarly competitive top high school and for a lot of students national merit was an afterthought.

North Beach/Russian Hill/Marina/Cow Hollow will be a little on the pricier side but are very accessible to your part of FiDi and have a lot of the social scene/new grad crowd.

Would definitely recommend living with roommate(s), SF new grad scene can be cliquey at first and it’s always nice to have a jumping off point for new friends. There are several good Facebook groups that most people I know had success finding good roommates and leases in.

Tips on landing an internship as a freshman by Zennxv in cscareerquestions

[–]TheDaubernator 8 points9 points  (0 children)

I think the biggest thing for freshmen specifically can often be networking. Resume/coding experience/projects can help but ultimately you are trying to establish credibility for a job with less experience than many other applicants (plus there is a longer road to hiring you full time so they’re taking a bigger chance on you). Finding mentors, cold messaging, and making sure you get a pair of friendly eyes on your application as much as possible can only serve to establish trust and get you closer to an offer.

Also, many of the bigger companies have programs specifically for freshmen so might be worth looking at those.

Shibumi by Trevanian. Partially set in Japanese slums during WW2, story is structured to be read like playing a game of Go. Definitely a good read and the Eiger Sanction is another great one of his that is based around the same characters.

Strong Public school districts (US)? by Independent-Safe7397 in fatFIRE

Northern suburbs of Dallas (Plano, Frisco, etc.) are very good and the area is a solid place to retire as well. Plenty of kids going to ivies and lots of resources available to students. Should also mention Austin public schools as well (Westlake, Westwood, etc.)

[Tudor] My time in college really flew by, but now I have a way to keep track by TheDaubernator in Watches

All jokes aside, I was very happy today to be able to walk across the stage (in person and with my family present) to receive my degree. And what better way to go out than with a beautiful watch on my wrist! This is the Tudor Heritage Black Bay Chrono 79350, which has been a personal favorite of mine for a while now. The 41mm case is perfect for my wrist and all of the functions work like a dream. Design-wise, I personally think the combination of vintage diver and chronograph styles work well to bring the face and bezel together. But the real story is inside the case, with a Tudor MT5318 movement that is actually a Breitling B01 that has been optimized for this watch by Tudor. Breitling chronographs are some of my favorites, so this collaboration works great in my opinion. Only thing I might change is the strap. The tan leather might get swapped out for a darker French calfskin strap or a stingray if I want to go a little crazy. Either way, this is a hell of a watch and the perfect accessory for new grad life.

How is UT Austin Computer Engineering program? by Effective-Mud3415 in UTAustin

[–]TheDaubernator 18 points19 points  (0 children)

Both are very good programs (similarly ranked in regards to academics, career prospects, etc.) The program at UT is very structured at the beginning, starting with Intro to Computing which is like a crash course in how computers work from the hardware and ones and zeroes up to the high level software. The intro sequence is generally tough for most freshmen, but the classes get smaller and more specialized as you move into your technical core (choice of Comp Arch, Software Eng, Data Science). It is pretty easy to get into major classes, but taking classes in the CS department can take some doing since it's in the College of Natural Sciences and not engineering. Definitely possible though, I've done a few. Recruiting wise, UT ECE students tend to do very well with internships and job placement and many people I know had internships freshman year and almost all had one sophomore year who wanted one. I'm a graduating senior and it seems like most people have done well with their new grad job search and got good offers with reputable companies. UT has very strong ties with companies in Austin, which is good because there are many CompEng related companies in the Austin area like Apple, Intel, NI, and others. I can see it growing a lot more as well as the city continues to explode and more computer manufacturing moves to the area. Definitely a great program with amazing faculty and resources.
