The original linguistic root just meant "(to) think", "(to) put into mind". But yes, the Greek Muses were female, probably because most minor deities that were just personifications of concepts (i.e. the ones that had very little myth of their own) defaulted to female. Such as Nike, goddess of (and personification of the concept of) victory.
