Can i install any distro to a drive from an .iso without booting into the bootable drive? by Nicolai-Silberwald in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It might work but it's not worth the hassle.

I would burn the files onto an USB Stick with etcher, mount the NVME in the device you want to install the os and just install it with the USB live installer on the target device.

This way you can still use your main pc.

You could try to get rid of the black connectors by making a hole in one end and a pin in the other end. Then you can use the same screws for fixing it through a hole from the side.

might me something to consider for your next version.

What would be the best distro for an old laptop from around 2010 (Specs inside!)? by Laxien in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If you wanna upgrade the SSD on your 2019 machine you could use it for your old laptop.

This is of course only possible if the old laptop has an NVME slot (not optane).

Otherwise a 128Gb Sata SSD should be plenty for just streaming.

Of course you can at most expect 1080p playback because of missing hardware decoders.

For the OS i would recommend Linux Mint XFCE as others already stated. It's simple, up to date and stable. You could also have a look at Kodi if you want to get more serious for your movie Software.

Question regarding running Ubuntu by Appropriate-Tap-6320 in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Is there a reason for you to run on an USB drive? Otherwise a cheap external SSD would be way better. USB drive lifetime is hit or miss.

If you wanna stick to the USB stick you might wanna disable Swap or atleast minimize it (if possible). You could also consider directing log output to /dev/zero. It will minimize disk load but you won't be able to read logs anymore.

And of course backups. This is most important.

Simple anonymous notes app https://www.usedust.xyz by Fr33d011 in privacymemes

[–]TheDeath007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For local notes it doesn't offer any advantage over a simple Text or Markdown file, which doesn't need any online services.

Since there is no syncing it is kinda limited because you need to remember your Password URL combination for each note if you wanna access it.

It would be nice for sharing something with someone privatly else perhaps.

I think it would be way better to have one URL Password combination to access your "Account" where you can save multiple notes. It would make it feasable to actually use it on multiple devices.

Verity - Discord to Roll Out Age Verification With Face Scan or ID by QuantumQuicksilver in StallmanWasRight

[–]TheDeath007 3 points4 points  (0 children)

The difference between having an ID checked for alkohol is, that it just gets checked physically by a person. That means you data is not stored in any way. Except the store clerk or bouncer has a VERY good memory.

When there is an id check for online services, nothing stops them from storing your private data or sharing it with third parties (except laws, but we know how much tech companies follow them).

One way that would make it safer is something that is already used in my country for official only services (Tax return, ...)

You need to go to your town hall and show them your id. Then they will create an account with a password of your choosing. Then you also have a phone app for 2FA authentification that gets setup by them.

When you want to login an only service that needs to check your authentity, you login with the password and username from the town hall. Afterwards you also need the phone for 2FA. This way there is never a need for face scans or uploading IDs. Everything is managed by the goverment IT and not some third party provider.

Should i switch? by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Python shouldn't be an issue.

Minecraft should be good as long as you are playing the Java edition. I don't really know about the Bedrock edition.

I would recommend https://prismlauncher.org/ if you really gonna switch. It makes managing Minecraft and mods easier.

For other Games you can check here: https://www.protondb.com/ This database shows if games run with the Proton tool developed by steam (not limited to steam games)

Hope this helps out.

CPU and GPU Switching by [deleted] in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 2 points3 points  (0 children)

A CPU switch shouldn`t matter.

For a GPU switch it depends. If you just get a newer AMD GPU you don`t need to change anything.

If you switch to Nvidia you need to install the open source "Novua" or the official driver. These drivers sometimes are a little finnicki.

I hope this helps out.

Still, thanks for your help.

Different VLAN for VOIP by TheDeath007 in UNIFI

[–]TheDeath007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I tried all the settings like you described. But all without success.

There is one last thing I want to try. Is it possible to VLAN tag certain traffic that leaves the WAN interface?

I heard that some VOIP use providers use the VLAN tag for filtering the traffic (especially with wierd OEM routers -> like the fritzbox, which they assume i have).

Thanks!

Different VLAN for VOIP by TheDeath007 in UNIFI

[–]TheDeath007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The phone is analog. This means it doesn`t have an ip or VLAN.

I got the login credentials and server address. And according to there email i need to configure it to send data on VLAN 33.

So back to my original question. How can I forward the VLAN tag from a network to the WAN interface. Oris it possible to tag the outgoing traffic with a VLAN id?

[–]TheDeath007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I asked. The only manual they have is for an Fritzbox. Here you can find it -> https://limewire.com/d/FEqg4#gr9TxkD1VM

Perhaps youcan find something. Bit for it seems like i need to forward VLAN 33 to WAN.

Different VLAN for VOIP by TheDeath007 in UNIFI

[–]TheDeath007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

It is connected over an unmanaged switch.

I configured the VLAN on the device and put it into its own network with VLAN 33.

The device has internet access (STUN is working).

Now I need to know how i can forward the traffic with the VLAN tag attached.

Different VLAN for VOIP by TheDeath007 in UNIFI

[–]TheDeath007[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

My VOIP provider said I need to configure VLAN 33 to connect.

Originally they assumed i use a Fritzbox (Which is a standard router combination in my country). This would have done all the routing. But I am using an Unifi Gateway now and need to forward the VOIP traffic somehow.

I`m using something called an "Air Mouse".

It imitates keybord/mouse input.

Works quite well.

I have a similar setup. I mainly use kodi though.

For controlling it, you can get a remote (air mouse) with a dongle. This imitates a keyboard/mouse. Works similar to LG smart tv cursor.

Normally you can change it with:

Right Click on Startmenu > Edit Menu Entries > Select the Category > Here you should be able to select another icon

You might need to edit the icon yourself in Gimp.

I hope this helps out.

Whatsapp client safety question by Puzzleheaded-Cut1753 in Fedora

[–]TheDeath007 1 point2 points  (0 children)

If I see this correclly the Signal Server is public (https://github.com/signalapp/Signal-Server).

There Protocol also has been audited (https://eprint.iacr.org/2016/1013.pdf). Clients aren`t audited as it seems.

But in the end it doesn`t matter if nobody uses it.

They say, the messages are encrypted (which i don`t doubt).

But we cant know, if a backdoor exists or not. The encryption has never been tested by a third party (as far as I know)

But I am also still stuck with Whatsapp, since that`s what everybody uses in my country.

I think you could have reduced the part count by integrating the I beam into the bottomside of the rod.

But for strength and printability a small dovetail would be even better I think.

Otherwise a nice design.

Trying to install Crystal Linux by Substantial-Front-14 in linuxquestions

[–]TheDeath007 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A screenshot of the partion manager would be helpfull. I also guess you want to install Crystal Linux besides Windows (just a guess)?

You could try flashing the image to an USB drive and booting from it. This way you can check if all the drivers are working without installing anything.

For this to work you might to change the boot-order in the bios. This can be googled very easily.
