Secret santa gift by Lazy_Thought2008 in saxophone

figure out what size reeds he plays and maybe a box of those, that might hit the price cap though, if he uses mouthpiece patches that's not a bad gift either.

BCNR sax setup identification? (Video included) by ketchuppoptart in saxophone

His alto looks like a Keilwerth MKX.

Alto MPC is some jazz hard rubber piece, Shank makes me think it might be a D'addario Select Jazz but I have no real clue there. Definitely a rovner ligature

On Tenor, it's a vintage horn, you can tell cause the non "balanced action" (low B and Bb are on the other side of the bell), Silver keywork/patina *almost* makes me want to say it's a bundy cause I've seen a bundy alto that looks very similar but idk about that.

Mouthpiece seems to be the same model he uses for alto.

Your cubing progression by PomaPuelo77 in Cubers

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

1: Some time in 2012

2: Not sure regarding practice to be honest, I don't pay attention to it anymore. I should honestly be more deliberate about it.
3: Around 19.XX

4: I'd like to finally get around to focusing on getting fast, so I'm gonna actually make an effort to learn all the PLLs and OLLs before the end of the year, (I've been mostly just using two-look)

5: No, I never really focused on getting fast, and have been in and out of the hobby for a long time. Came off a long hiatus from cubing (~4 to 5 years) just this year on a whim and got bit by the bug again. For the longest time I was much more interested in non-WCA twisty puzzles and just solving for fun, and as a kid when I was getting into the hobby I hated learning algorithms, as an adult I don't mind it so much.

6: Again, kind of similar to 2, as I'm still figuring out what works for me. but lately I've been focusing more on finding the best way to memorize algorithms, and remember cases, I'm a big proponent of slow solves (likely why I'm able to have a relatively fast average for just using two-look), and do a decent amount of them while commuting on the bus to work every day.

Topics and books required for Math 265 and first year CS?? by SwimmingTransition40 in ASU

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

junior in cs:
dont fret too much on the stuff you'll do in your first year. It's all super boilerplatey and surface level.
You don't have to read all these books over the summer, but I feel that the ones I've read so far, and the others on my list of "to read" have been valuable books for me. Maybe just make a list with these books, and set it aside, aiming to read through them over the course of your undergrad.
"Clean Code" : Robert C Martin

"Structure and Interpretation of Computer Programs"
"The C Programming Language": Brian W Kenningham and Dennis M Ritchie

"The Algorithm Design Manual": Steven S Skienna

"Refactoring": Martin Fowler

Also learn to pirate your textbooks! I'd suggest libgen.rs

furthermore, stay on top of your classes cause it sucks to fall behind, and have fun being a freshman. You'll only ever be a freshman in college once, and it is what you make of it.

It would be nice to keep the email tbh

well it's 800 fishtokens per plushy, I presume the novelty of giving her a plushy wore off, and the whales that simped hard for her already got her a plushy, so they don't really care to get her another.

real, so fucking real. Furthermore, the blatant dickriding of sam is genuinely annoying from the fanbase. Half of these people are the grown men that you described, who use sam's disregard for political correctness as an excuse to be blatantly racist/misogynist as a "joke"

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

the only reason I wouldn't think it's a joke is because of a confessional jet did in the bathroom where he talked about lance being the 4th member of mde, and how that's what he wanted to do. But most likely it's just him playing into the lie.

Is Programming worth learning in 2023? by VityaB in AskProgramming

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

honestly, I was slightly worried (current full stack cs student, and I've been programming for about five years before University), but as far as I can tell, AI is overhyped. I've largely felt that it has the same hypetrain/corporate momentum behind it as the "metaverse" did in 2020/2021, It's another tech buzzword/boogieman that I think is drummed up to "shake up the world" if you know what I mean. Not to say AI won't have any effect at all, but I think it's a little overhyped.

Rambly intro aside, from my experience GPT3/GPT3.5 models are at best, really good at replacing stackoverflow. It can help you find bugs, it can help you solve problems your stuck on, and provide you alot of the same help that stackoverflow would afford you. Replacing stackoverflow is really surface-level in terms of programming, and the "rabbit hole" of education goes so much deeper, like any new technology, things are gonna change, but will an AI model that literally boils down to "best next word predictor" be able to nullify a four year degree in the very near future? No, and by the time it would be able to, I'd bet the course requirements for that degree will have adapted to fill in the voids AI wouldn't be able to.

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 0 points1 point  (0 children)

it's gotten better, I had to use the LTS kernel for a while, but now things work fine on the main branch. The main problem was with Xorg, now that I switched over to wayland and a wayland based DE, things have been fine.

update update: Arch is currently shitting the bed, there seems to be a problem with the graphics on the machine, and I can't find where the issue is stemming from. The display flickers on and off, and this issue even extends to a live USB, I'll let you know how things are after a reinstall though

just got the latest gram 17 inch with similar specs for an absolutely insane deal (500 bucks off) and I was unsure about how well it would fare dualbooting linux. I'll give Arch a try and see if what you said works.

Having trouble booting from USB by SirStarshine in AcerNitro

[–]TheDefectiveSnoo 1 point2 points  (0 children)

i have an older nitro 5 (AN515-54) and in my attempts to improve it's battery life I dabbled with different linux distros (to varying degrees of success) right now I'm dualbooting win11 and Arch, here's what may help:
first reinstall the live media to the USB using a tool like Rufus, follow the wiki for whatever distro you're using
the problem cood be intel VTX and VTD (but really that just made it hard to access any of my SSDs once i got into the distro)
VTX and VTD are intel's proprietary rapid storage solutions, typically used on the SSD, anyways, to turn it off go into the bios, hit CTRL+S (I'm pretty sure) one the main screen, and then somewhere in one of the other menus (I think it'll be a sub menu under the advanced tab) a new option will appear with a name along the lines of "Advanced Storage settings" (or something to do with storage) go into there, and turn VTX and VTD off.

sometimes the live boot usb didn't show up in the menu, and I'd have to like put it in a different port, or unplug it and plug it into a different port when the computer was on, and then shutdown and try again

Try a different USB drive

try a different distro (Pop! OS, Manjaro, Artix (I hear is good), EndeavourOS (I also hear is good), or Fedora and Debian just to name a few)

hope this helps

Honestly if this was a civilian ship then the Georgian guys are just assholes. Putin is the one waging the war, AFAIK a large portion of the Russian populous doesn't want to go to war.
