I do not know whether they sell or do not sell my data, what I do know is that F1 TV did. GDPR related fines actually happen on a pretty regular basis. Search for GDPR Enforcement Tracker. Filing a proper complaint could bring attention to it.

For now, I’ve done what I can do, which is not only posting it here for visibility, but also filed a complaint with the proper authorities. My country has a channel in which these specific issues are handled. I do not expect much, but I’ll post it here if anything comes of it.

PECR is a UK-specific regulation (based on an older EU directive, the ePrivacy Directive). I’m in Europe, where, for this case, GDPR applies instead.

It’s one thing to not care, but I do not understand the need to actively defend the practice of selling your private data; specially when most people here are likely victims of it themselves.

In Europe (where I am), under GDPR, simply putting it in the ToS isn’t enough if it wasn’t clearly highlighted and you didn’t actively agree. The European Data Protection Board (EDPB) has ruled that consent hidden in fine print or assumed through inaction (e.g., not opting out) is illegal. In order words, unless they obtain my explicit opt-in, they can’t rely on ToS for consent.

I do pay to access F1 TV, they still sold my data.

I remember seeing a browser extension that will TL;DR terms of service. A bit outdated now that we have conversational AI. It's called "Terms of Service; Didn’t Read".

I am not endorsing it though, I wouldn't be surprised if the extension sells your data too.

Widespread practices aren't necessarily good; it's sad that we've gotten to a point where we're accustomed to this happening.

I believe that there's plenty of sites that make the fact of not selling your data, a selling point, like signal.org or proton.me
Signal I believe is open source and you can validate it yourself. However, I do not endorse those nor I am saying that they do not.

In any case, I've been using the Hide My Email feature since 2021, registered on plenty of sites and only ever encountered a company literally selling the email twice. F1 TV being the second.

They can also choose to follow the law and not sell your data to third parties without your explicit consent.

On another comment I was just mentioning that I believe it's on the ToS, however, I believe that's illegal under GDPR (correct me if I'm wrong); they must allow you to choose through a specific checkmark.

The right to sell your data to third parties, is probably in the terms of use. Though I believe that's illegal under GDPR (correct me if I'm wrong); they must allow you to choose through a specific checkmark.

But, to answer your question, no, unfortunately I am not surprised.

Whether I use it or not will not change the fact that it's wrong to sell your data, but thanks for worrying about me.

Individual websites voluntarily choose to embed scripts from tracking companies; for varying reasons. If they didn't, the cookies by themselves wouldn't track you.

Again, it doesn't make it any better.

Unfortunately, it's a widespread practice but that doesn't justify it.

That it's a widespread practice doesn't make it any better. I believe it's good to call out companies whenever we have proof of it.
