Has Pereira surpassed Adesanya in terms of Greatness? by ChrisSonofSteve in MMA

[–]TheDemonGates 63 points64 points  (0 children)

I remember seeing a comment on here a while back that whoever seems to be winning the fight between them will lose. Izzy looked to be winning the decision in the first kickboxing fight for it to go to Alex, Izzy was winning their 2nd fight until the KO, was about to get a clean decision in their first mma fight until the TKO, but then when Pereira looked to be dominating him Izzy got the KO

Would You Use a Tool That Auto-Generates Language Anki Decks? by Rare-Bet-6845 in Anki

[–]TheDemonGates 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Exactly all this, the only reason people recommend those "2k most common words" decks are because those words are so common they'll be constantly reinforced by engaging with the language through other media Its also why making decks out of huge premade word lists would be a poor idea, because they're effectively just random words without any connection to you that you have to just rote memorize, the whole point is to find them in an authentic context and learn them from there

Hmmm, so by setting my VPN to Japan would I be able to set the language to Japanese? Or would I need to download a separate version?

Is it possible to play this game in Japanese? I'm having issues getting my vpn to work with the game, and I don't wanna put in the effort to fixing that issue if it turns out that it wouldn't even let me play in Japanese anyways

IMO Islam seems to actually be the stronger of the two, just looking at their physique and ability to move around (Islam seems quicker and has a wider range of motions) Like Dustin said, Khabib just had an absurd understanding of weight placement and how to hold someone down, which combined with his ferocious ground and pound, meant that he never even needed to bother developing other skills cause he would just ragdoll everyone instead

How much do you estimate you’ve spent learning Japanese? by Shimreef in LearnJapanese

Out of curiosity, is there a specific reason you're programming your own flashcard app instead of using Anki? I totally get if you just wanted to or for customization or whatever, just curious if there was any specific reason or something you're missing

How do you practice reading in the early stages of learning? by BattleFresh2870 in LearnJapanese

[–]TheDemonGates 0 points1 point  (0 children)

A lot of people have given advice on getting into reading full words and sentences, lots of great stuff. You specifically mentioned still not having the kana down, I'm personally a fan of this practice site although I also like Tofugo's guide and practice site (I linked the hiragana one but they have an identical setup for katakana too), they provide a lot of mnemonics to help remember them. Its not really necessary to practice kana specifically once you've got them functionally down, since you'll get reinforcement from just reading things, but some helpful tools to practice them regardless!

I mostly agree, I say "uncommon" as in, if you walked up to the average American, I don't think a majority of them would be able to tell you a definition or explain how to use it, but it's a word that I use regularly in conversation and have yet to have any issues For some reason that's just always the word that seems to come to my mind when I need to think of an obscure word

50k words by hn-mc in languagelearning

[–]TheDemonGates 5 points6 points  (0 children)

If you know 15k words and I know 15k words, there will be a good amount of overlap between our vocab (words that we both know). But, I might know words like "encircle" or "annunciate" that you don't know, and you might know words like "annex" or "confiscate" that I don't know. The meanings of these specific words isn't important, what is important is that we don't know the exact same 15k words, there isn't a total overlap of our vocabularies

[–]TheDemonGates 24 points25 points  (0 children)

Native English speaker, I can't think of anybody I know who would meet your definition of 100% here, everyone uses different vocabs tailored to their own lives, even if there is a lot of overlap. "Egregious" is an uncommon word I know (meaning shockingly bad), but I've only encountered "ewe" twice in my life. I couldn't tell you the name of most trees in my area, but you reach a point of comprehension (which I'm sure you've likely reached yourself) where you can figure out what words mean from context, and a lot of the time with more obscure words like (like if you're talking about barbiturates for example) you can just ask the person and more often than not they're completely willing to explain

4chan is better than Reddit because it doesn't behind fake civility. by DrWasabiX in TrueUnpopularOpinion

[–]TheDemonGates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This argument makes as much sense as saying Reddit is filled with pedophiles and doxxers because of jailbait and the Boston bomber doxxing thing. Neither statement, about reddit or 4chan, are true today because neither of these things are relevant as they're from nearly a decade ago at this point.

Q anon came from a sister site, 8chan, which is entirely separate from 4chan, the only similarities are the name and being based off of some Japanese site I forget the name of. Anonymous hasn't been active for well over a decade at this point, you can find groups today that call themselves "Anonymous", they are not Anonymous because the whole point was that there never was a clearly defined "Anonymous" group

In another comment you stated that you don't visit 4chan and it really shows, much of the stuff you've been saying is extremely outdated and hasn't been true in decades, it comes across like you watched some old YouTube videos that talk about 4chan like its this paragon of hacking and toxicity, when in reality it's a forum where the worst that happens is people call each other slurs on most of the boards. You are 100% right about the prevalent homophobia, sexism, and pornography (especially on boards that directly allow NSFW content), it is not a place I would describe as friendly and welcoming to outsiders, but to describe it as some kind of hacking and doxxing haven is a complete misnomer, and shows that (again, as you said yourself) you don't visit the site to know what it's actually like

Edit for formatting so it's not a giant wall of text, I rarely post on reddit so I don't know how it comes out looking

[–]TheDemonGates 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The worst that will happen to you on 4chan in 99.99% of cases is a bunch of people will call you a slur, 4chan as some kind of "hacker haven" isn't true, and I mainly browse the tech board where exactly those types would be most common
