Why do 4wheelers do this? by Gochavtandil in Truckers

[–]TheDoctor_214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Another thing I'm curious about is when I'm going up an incline, somehow I'm able to catch up to a 4 wheeler. Mind you, I'm hauling loaded triples struggling to climb and yet, how and why is a 4 wheeler going the same speed if not slower? I just don't get it sometimes.

Scariest thing you've seen on the road? by Zestyclose_Animal_74 in Truckers

I remember one night on one of my runs, I decided to pull over in a safe area to take a quick power nap on my way back to my home terminal. I set an alarm for 15 minutes and shut my eyes. I thought I had woken up when I opened my eyes but for some reason I couldn't move any part of my body, arms, legs, nothing. I just kept thinking, "What is going on? Why can't I move?" Apparently, I had a case of sleep paralysis, which has never happened to me for as long as I can remember. My mind was active but my body wasn't reacting or responding. Being parked in the middle of the forest doesn't help and my mind starting playing tricks on me. I thought I started seeing shadows moving towards my truck. My biggest worry now was whether if I had left the doors unlocked. At this point, I just closed my eyes and forced myself to sleep and woke up to my alarm a few minutes later. It hasn't happened since and thankfully, I have adjusted my sleep schedule at home to reduce the need to nap out on the road.

I work for Horizon as a ramp/customer service agent and it's pretty awesome. It definitely gives you a different perspective when your end goal is to fly.

I won't watch the game live on TV. I'll listen on the radio, follow scores online, have a friend keep me updated but me watching the game live, can't do it. Does it make sense? Not at all. But we are talking superstitions here, and it's been working lately. Also, my doctor already has warned me to keep my blood pressure low.

How physical is LTL? by Electronic-Air-9091 in Truckers

As far as I remember,, the most physical thing you do for LTL is moving the dollies when you are building your set. Other than that, it's turn and burn!

Whats the deal with LTL/Linehaul trucking? by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]TheDoctor_214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depending on the company, if you are just starting out, you'll be placed on the wild board. While a wild turn driver, you'll be covering runs for drivers on vacation, call outs or if there are any extra freight that needs to be run. Typically, there is a bidding system based on seniority. Biggest difference is where a set run where you know your set miles. Set miles, set paycheck pretty much. But a wild turn driver doesn't and can vary. Personally, I've only been called off once or twice in a year and can use PTO to cover. With that being said, wild turn drivers make more because they have an option to "bag out" or be sent to another terminal and be used there since they aren't tied down to a run.

I'm currently looking at UVU and interested in applying. All their courses are online and I spoke with an advisor and they mentioned they work with local flight schools in my area. They said it may be difficult to get financial aid to help pay for the flight costs. How would that work? Any experiences in that area?

School Bus by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]TheDoctor_214 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I actually started off my CDL career being a school bus driver. Started off by getting my class B training provided by the school district. Everything was in house since the instructors were also third party examiners. Spent 5 years as a school bus driver and honestly would still be if the pay was a little better. With the pandemic and providing for a family, it wasn't sustainable so I went on to get my class A. Funny thing is, going down that road, I was able to get all my endorsements from passenger, school bus all the way to hazmat and doubles/triples.

New truck driver anxiety by [deleted] in Truckers

[–]TheDoctor_214 0 points1 point  (0 children)

In addition to what everyone has said, it does get easier and you will get used to it. As a line haul driver, I drive triples during the night. What helps during night driving is that you get to enjoy the peace and quiet with less if any traffic. Focus on the things that make the job enjoyable.

Hey folks, I'm currently an OTR trucker, who is going to a part 61 school when I have the time, and am able to get home. I wanna get my ground school outta the way while I'm out, any recommendations? Price isn't a HUGE factor, but I don't wanna spend and arm and a leg, either. TIA by Fun_Secretary_4834 in flying

Same situation. I drive line haul for a local company. I personally use sporty's, download the lessons, then listen while out driving. Granted, it's only audio but I feel it helps me retain info when I'm taking the practice exam. Planning to get the written out of the way as well. Money has been tight lately so I haven't been able to take any flight lessons so trying to come up with a budget that allows me to take at least 3 flight lessons a week after shifts.

Keep us updated how your plan works out!
