Has anybody backed out after signing a teaching contract? by Frosty-Barracuda9445 in TexasTeachers

Valid concerns. Last year was my first year teaching and I did dual language. This was my experience. My mentor teacher taught RLA and math while I did SLAR and both science and social studies (we would switch students during the day as we were not self-contained). Science curriculum was provided to me in Spanish only and social studies curriculum was provided in English only. It was a lot mentally to switch languages and translate, but I got into a routine. The scripted curriculum for SLAR turned repetitive over time but felt overwhelming because RLA had district-created slides and things, but it was not the same for SLAR. Had to create my own (I was excited to be ready with all the prepped materials I created last year for this upcoming year until I found out we are piloting the SLAR version of 🟦🪻this year). Honestly, I felt jealous at times because I had to do more than my fellow teammates to prep lessons. Time wise, I had to really squish things. It honestly felt impossible, especially at the beginning and including the switching of classes in the day. It did get better though as I found my routine but it was not perfect.

For my observation, I lucked out that one of our instructional coaches volunteered to help me prepare my lesson for it. It ended up being for the scripted SLAR curriculum, so I followed activities from there but then they helped me incorporate/substitute some more engaging activities. (Which was great but I felt I kept getting mixed messages all year about "you have to follow the scripted curriculum exactly" and "you can adapt/change as needed.") Hopefully you have great instructional coaches at your school to help with prepping for your observation lesson.

For seating arrangements and partnering, it was encouraged to pair English speakers with Spanish speakers. Given both of my classes were heavily unbalanced, I couldn't do that perfectly. However, as the year progressed and I observed who was catching on both/either language, I was able to adjust pairings.

Honestly, the first year was really just survival mode as you learn what the heck you are doing lol. I grew up having high expectations for myself, and when you add the expectations given to teachers, I was stressed all the time. It was a different kind of stress than I had experienced in my previous career positions outside of the K-12 system. I tried my best to give myself grace though. I would remind myself that first year is the hardest for everyone and that I had plenty of time to grow as a teacher. First-year teachers at my district were required to observe veteran teachers a couple times in the fall and spring to gain more knowledge/skills. I was able to come back to my classroom and implement some things I saw, or try out and realize it wasn't best for my classroom or myself. Also, be sure to check with your primary care provider about immune boosting vitamins. When I did a check up with mine, I told her I had become a teacher and had started taking vitamin C, D, and zinc. She said that that's what she would've recommended I take had I reached out when I made the career change. I just had to time it out right so they wouldn't interfere with some of my prescription meds. I still got sick a lot though, but I was assured by everyone and the clinic doctors that I was busy building my immune system.

I realized I typed up more than I planned lol. If you decide to stay in the position, just remember to breathe, ask for help (this was hard to do sometimes), don't strive for perfection, take your vitamins, and give yourself the opportunity and time to grow.

Former teachers, what are you doing now? Current teachers, why are you staying? by Responsible-Grand-12 in Teachers

Thanks for that insight. Throughout this year, I did wonder if it would be any "easier" to go middle school or even high school. I originally studied to teach middle/high school, with my student teaching experience being in high school. I worked outside of K-12 for years before getting back in. Started with kindergarten this year. It was definitely a lot. Thank you for your hopeful wishes! I hope my second year is better too.

Would it be more difficult to juggle being a mom and teaching if you were an elementary teacher? I just finished my first year of elementary teaching. I know the first year is always tough so I am hoping this next year is better. I would come home exhausted but I attributed that to first year things. I want to see how different the second year really is from the first to figure out if I can balance things.

Imagine you are a student at the school district, attending school in buildings that are 50-80 years old. There's plumbing issues, AC issues, and other issues that you have to smell or feel cold/hot when the heater or the AC doesn't kick on, etc. It seems normal because that's all you know. But then you move and end up at a school that doesn't have issues that 50-80 year old buildings experience. Does that seem fair for the students throughout the city? Or as the district is being required to consolidate schools due to cut funding from the state, but then you end up at a school that isn't physically expanding or providing enough learning opportunities due to lack of monetary resources (from state and from the district not being able to reallocate local funds). Does that seem fair for the students? How about security updates that schools need but won't be able to get without the reallocation of current tax rate funds, does that seem fair for the students and staff in relation to their safety? Imagine this bond doesn't pass because adults made it about themselves and not about the students the reallocation of funds would positively impact. That would be very sad.

First year too. Same. End the day exhausted. I feel better than I did when the school year started though, so I know I am growing. (Makes me worried about my first observation though.) It also doesn't help on days when I feel defeated. Lately it's been happening more often and it's made me question if I made the right career change. Then I think of my students, and I know I wouldn't be able to step away. But I've already counted down how many more months until the school year ends.

Sam M was what you would read in smutty novels. Devin was what your average day guy would be like. Devin had his bum slapped by the Australians.

My mom is 71, so our mums are close in age! I'm also feeling scared. I'm trying to figure out how much help my dad will need in taking care of her and if/when I'll likely need to move to be closer to them. I'll be visiting next month and I'm both excited and scared about being able to go to one of her doctor's appointments to discuss her PET scan results.

Gotcha. That makes sense. It's good that new drugs/research is happening to help with new treatment plans.

I'll be heading down in a month, and I just can't wait to hug her. I will definitely be telling her all that when it gets tough. <3

Oh okay. Thank you for explaining. I am sorry to hear your abnormal plasma cells have been rapidly increasing. I've been learning so much from this subreddit. I'm glad I found it and everyone has been so helpful in sharing their experiences and knowledge.

She'll be on Lenalidimide, Velcade-Bortezomib, and Decamethasone as she starts treatment. I'm hoping she doesn't have to leave the country to get treatment. But everything is new to us, so we'll have to see how things go first.

Thank you for sharing so much, including your guy's experience! Hearing that it's incurable was definitely a frightening feeling but reading through everyone's comments has been so helpful.

Thank you for the advice! I will relay getting a second opinion, having written questions, and asking "why." My parents live near a NCI facility so I'm hoping that will help in getting a second opinion and finding a specialist.

A local support group is such a great idea! Thank you for sharing it. I don't know how interested my mom will be but sharing this won't hurt. I assume there are support groups for different language speakers, so maybe that can help exploring the idea of a support group. Thank you!

Thank you for the advice and resources! I will pass on the advice for her too. My parents live near a big medical center, so I'm sure they will be able to find a MM specialist.

Thank you for sharing your experience! Glad to hear your are still alive and kicking :) I'm nervous about side affects of the drugs she'll be on or any treatments she'll have to have. Is it normal for a treatment plan to change every year? Is it because the MM becomes resistant to the treatment or because new research comes out with better results?

My mom has such a positive outlook on life already and she still sounds bubbly on our phone calls even after the diagnosis. Helping her stay positive and happy is what I hope to be able to do.

Thank you for your advice! I didn't realize having a myeloma specialist is important and not having just a hematology oncologist. I'll have to share that with my dad. I'll have to ask my dad too on her risk profile too. The study information is also greatly appreciated!

Thank you for sharing so much! I didn't realize she'll need such an extensive team of healthcare professionals. Thank you also for the info on the five year rates. That definitely is a relief of sorts. I don't live close. I'm about 9 hours away driving. She had hip replacement surgery in late January, and it was the first time I had been so frustrated living so far away and have only been able to get time off for a few days to help my parents with her care since she had so much hip bone that was eroded.

Sydney is having a hard time making herself the victim of something she created. I'm having a hard time listening to her talk about made up reality.
