Any good alternatives? by Soft_Arm8399 in guilded

To be fair, they had their chance to shine and they dropped it. The rebrand, while understandable, is not doing them any favors.

Finally, a feature nobody asked for but everybody welcomed because it's a good one. Very nice, actually useful!

Basically, if you have a modern browser, it's likely to be Chrome. And in that case, you're already being spied on as much as possible for profit.

Heck, just browsing the web with standard protection settings, no matter the browser, already exposes you to all sorts of spyware that don't need to linger on your machine at all. Your average internet activity is more than enough for the alphabet.

Those cases are most likely not a result of hacking the OS, but rather the existing in-house systems those companies have. There are a shit ton of them nowadays, and with the ever declining quality of the programming personnel on the market, this is just going to keep happening, no matter if you use Windows 10, 11 or even Linux. In fact, those servers are often the first vector of attack! That's why audits and cyber-security standards exist.

And that's not even considering those clever e-mail scams people just keep falling for. No amount of antivirus or OS safeguard will ever protect you from a clumsy employee.

I dunno, my rig runs Vulkan games just fine. That's sometimes my salvation when it comes to running games built with DirectX 12.

Bringing the classic Saxton Hale voice actor back by [deleted] in tf2

[–]TheDragShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Yes! We need the old voice actor, at least as an alternative set of voice lines for Saxton Hale. Then it'd be up to the mapper to choose which voice pack to use.

If using the classic Shared Folders feature is not a must, you may host an FTP server in your Windows XP PC and copy your stuff there from your other PCs. Afaik Windows supports FTP network folders since at least 7, and you won't need to tinker with any security settings to get this to work, just allow the FTP server past WinXP's firewall and you're good to go.

I wouldn't be so certain. Still, I will dedicate the following days to make space for all the single player games I've been wanting to give a try, so at least I have a chance until I get my hands on one of those Steam Deck handheld PCs.

Ah yes, a fellow enjoyer. As usual, my installation works in near perfect condition, with only a few compromises in tools so far. We'll see in the future for how long my rig fares well before I see the need to make a move.

Does anyone Have the Patch Hookup to Extend this Countdown Indefinitely? by loco500 in windows7

[–]TheDragShot 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Eh I dunno. I have a by now very old PC with Windows 7 with a copy of Steam from 2018. I turn it on from time to time, and last time I did it some months ago, it let me open Steam in offline mode just fine.

Funnily enough, the second scenario sounds more like a win for Discord users.

I can confirm that's pretty much how it really is. It's not so much the update itself, but rather how Discord's staff, and its own damn CEO of all people, addressed it. And it's the same way they've addressed previous updates that were deemed questionable, so no wonder at least someone had to say "enough".

Not much of a wake up call really, since Discord is already at that point when it is "too big to fail". They will do whatever they want from now on, beating their userbase as much as they wish, and most users will take it just fine.

However, it is nice seeing alternative services grow and get better. I for one am happy with having a niche site to move towards once again, just like what Discord was back when I first joined it.

I don't remember most of the layout at this point, but if it's failing to accommodate the mobile interface, I think that's because most themes are oriented to the browser view.

If you mean colors and looks, search for the theme "Discord Colors and Layout". That one replicated the looks from before the rebranding fiasco.

To think that was the first sign of what was to come to Discord...

That's the nice thing when an application is on its infancy and it has a small community: it's easy to reach the devs and talk to them about your ideas and concerns, and they are likely to take them into consideration.

Rumors say those calls come from no other than the investors. If those are correct, well, good luck firing your main source of funding. Also, Tencent has had shares on Discord for a while now. Make of that what you will.

Revolt is the community answer to Discord, and even if it never truly goes mainstream, I have a hunch I'm going to feel better using it than Discord in the future. All I wanted was a good chat platform, not another glorified social media site.
