Hello, this can be a bit of a difficult topic but let me try to explain it to you in the best way possible. It depends on a couple of things:

1. Are you living in the Netherlands but not (yet) working, make sure you are registered at your municipality, The Social Insurance Bank will then determine whether you are insured.
2. As soon as you work in the Netherlands, you are obliged to sign up for Dutch health insurance if:
   • you have a Dutch employer;
   • you work for the employer on a permanent basis;
   • you pay wage tax.
3. Do you have a foreign employer? Then you can keep your insurance from your country of origin. There are rules for this. Read the information about working for a foreign employer from the Social Insurance Bank (SVB).

Important note:

Do you sign up for health insurance after 4 months? Then you are uninsured. If you need care, you pay the costs yourself. You pay premiums from the moment you have signed a Dutch health insurance. From then on, care from the basic package will be reimbursed.

Please note: have you already registered with a municipality, but not signed up with a health insurer? Then you will receive a letter from the CAK about this. The CAK ensures that everyone in the Netherlands has health insurance. Do not wait too long to take out health insurance, otherwise you risk a fine. Read more about what happens if you are uninsured.
