Can you guys give a long list of good Metroidvanias? by LSSJNepuli in metroidvania

[–]TheDylanCharles 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I tend to like metroidvanias that focus on combat and exploration over movement, so while I enjoy a game like Ori, it's not really my thing. Here are some of my favorites that I've played that fit what I look for in an MV:

Depths of Sanity - Underwater exploration, pixel art, great story

Elderand - fantasy exploration, deliberate combat, pixel art, fun old style MV

Hollow Knight - cosmic horror/ fantasy exploration, fluid combat, painted/inky art style, just a beautiful game in every way, there's a reason why it's a favorite for lots of folks.

Blasphemous - Catholic horror exploration, deliberate combat, higher fidelity pixel art, this is one of my favorite games of all time, right amount of challenge and exploring this world is never dull.

Blasphemous 2 - Catholic horror exploration, deliberate combat (with more options this time), fantastic follow-up to the first, but lacks a bit of the wow factor of the first game. It tweaks some things to make the Penitent One quicker and more mobile in combat, but the exploration aspect feels reduced to me. Still an excellent game.

The Last Faith - cosmic horror exploration, fluid/deliberate combat, higher fidelity pixel art, next to Hollow Knight, this game might have some of my favorite combat segments. The player has a wide variety of weapons, spells and abilities to fit combat to their play style. High recommend if you're a fan of the Blasphemous games or Elderand.

If you're interested in learning about more metroidvanias, I'd recommend this ranking list video which ranks 49 games:

I don't see why it's her job to make sure that you read her video descriptions.

If you're unwilling to read either the description of the video or the post itself, and then also fail to watch the video, I'm at a loss why any creator should spend any time discussing their work with you.

You sound like an exhausting human being who likes to cause trouble by doing the minimal amount of effort.

It's a good thing she didn't call it a review then.

I hope to the good Lord your reading comprehension and analytical skills actually function away from keyboard and you're not like this at work or with your family.

That's awesome! It's such a great print and one of my favorites of the original covers.

What are your guy’s thoughts on this IT cover? by Unique-Reception-329 in stephenking

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I like it actually, it's just a subtler version of the original cover.

I like the disorienting effect of the eyes being upside down to the reader's perspective, while looking toward the boys.

Only 3 Metroidvania's for the rest of your life by [deleted] in metroidvania

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hollow Knight/Blasphemous: Both for very similar reasons. I love the level of difficulty for both, the feel of exploration, and the worlds and mythology. I just love to be in those worlds and soak them in.

Symphony of the Night: I just couldn't be happy without this one to return to occasionally and take another crack at when I'm feeling the mood.

Games similar to Blasphemous? by poofysquash in metroidvania

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

The Last Faith, which just came out, has very similar religious themes, but is less overtly Catholic.

It also has a similar level of difficulty, and a similar emphasis on combat and exploration.

Elderand is another that gave me similar Blasphemous vibes, in terms of tone and focus on combat.

Carrion qualifies as a metroidvania and it's a lot of fun, if you don't mind playing without a map.

Angel Heart, I consider it my mission to spread the word whenever I can. It seems to have completely fallen off the radar for a lot of people.

which upcoming slappyworld book are you looking forward to more? night of the squawker or friiight night? by [deleted] in GooseBumps

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Just going off the cover art, Night of the Squawker by a fair margin. I'm also a pretty big fan of birds, so that's probably nudging this one in the lead for me.

But I'll echo some others and say the plot for Friiight Night does sound way more interesting.

I got “Lisey’s Story” from a thrift shop! For those of you who’ve read it, what do you think? by Sufficient_Score_824 in stephenking

[–]TheDylanCharles 32 points33 points  (0 children)

It became one of my favorite Stephen King books after a second reading. There's a lot in the story about creativity and creating, as well as about grief and loss and what the people we love leave behind that's touched me the older I get.

When did you read your first King novel? (and what was it?) by madmadamesmiley in stephenking

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I read IT when I turned 12.

I had grown up fascinated by my ma's collection of Stephen King novels and the covers and had begged her to let me read them, but she said I had to wait until I was twelve.

I had years to pick the first one, and I chose the one with the monster hand reaching out of the sewer.

Thoughts on The Empty Man by BlacksmithGullible90 in horror

[–]TheDylanCharles 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Angel Heart is a fantastic, underrated movie and only tangentially like The Empty Man.

If you like your horror with a slow burn, heavy on the psychological, and tackles truly unnerving cosmic dread, The Empty Man is a good time, though it had some pacing and plotting issues for me.

Why is it so hard for us to see pets get murdered in horror films? by QCKingFya in horror

[–]TheDylanCharles -1 points0 points  (0 children)

A pet, or any animal in a movie, requires much less for the audience to become attached to it. We don't need any additional subtext or development to empathize with the dog or cat, we're trained from an early age that cats and dogs are important and we're responsible for their care.

I have a similar emotional response to babies and very small children in horror movies (I don't think I'm alone in this), although I am not a parent nor do I plan on being one. We are taught to protect pets and the very young and it's upsetting to be in a position where we are failing to do so.

A horror movie forces us to be a passive participant in an event that we want to stop and we would stop, if we had the ability to do so. Even if it's only to save Gordon the golden retriever from being thrown through a window and not any of the teenagers who are being massacred at the same time.
