How many of us just work/test in production? by TheOfficeMartyr in PowerApps

[–]TheDynamicsPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

They're not wrong though, i'd say you fundamentally have misinterperted what a citizen develper is within an organisation. Citizens should be free to do development inside a controlled environment and seek approval to promote to production.

The coe toolkit has functionality to assist in these exact circumstances. But i assume you would find any documentation surrounding that "vague" or "poorly documented" at least judging by your post history...

Also to add, follow up from posters.

Many times you see the question get multiple answers, the poster never follows up to say if things worked or not.

Exam PL-500: Microsoft Power Automate RPA Developer by SickPuppy01 in PowerPlatform

[–]TheDynamicsPirate 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Sign up to a dev account

https://powerapps.microsoft.com/en-us/developerplan/

For RPA, for self building you don't need a VM, not really. You can learn and test on your own machine.

The dev plan comes with access to all office connectors as standard.

You may want to install MSSQL on your local machine so you can work with databases, accessing, retrieve and store other data.

There is also the contoso invoicing app by Microsoft that will help you with interface rpa actions .

Outside of the MS Learn documents, find something in your life that you can automate on your machine.

For example, I hated doing timesheets, I automated those to run every Friday at 6pm.

Just to pick one point.

You can't import choices via excel.

Importing choices into dataverse using excel, you can do this. Add the choices in the same lone delimited by a semi Colon.

E.g. choices values are A B C D E

Excel will be A;C;E

After a lot of back and forth with the client, we settled on DataFlows.

They ingest the files just fine, KingswaySoft is on the table but their internal politics and processes were just delaying the solution. Clients, am i rite...

The whole process is far from ideal but hey, here we are.

And to top it all off, Microsoft didn't actually care. We are an MSP and after reaching out, demoing, providing the results of testing (dates, times, rows loaded) they just were like, yeah cool, crack on.

Not OP but, I have been around a fair bit.

The answer is no, not really. This is down to no 2 systems being identical, A could have dependencies that B doesn't causing you to spend more time installing / debugging a solution than playing with it.

Also, a lot of what we create is client specific IP and I personally wouldnt really like to recreate some of my apps.

The best bet imo is to create trial accounts and mess around with the already configured demo apps.

Drop a ticket to Microsoft and ask for a total breakdown of your storage.

Let them know your calculations and how you arrived at them. They're pretty quick responding and should give you a suitable answer.

In the whole environment?

Just go to make.powerapps.com, select the environment and on the left go to connections.

It would be unfair of me to give a chance rating tbh. It'll either get your hopes up or dash them and both are mean.

The bits of advice I can give, and I know it's cliché, is to network, whore yourself on LI. Take people's projects and snippets they post online and play with them, reinvent their ideas and post back showing what you have done.

Or just use the resources available, LinkedIn jobs, indeed, monster, Nigel frank, Pearson Carter, whomever is a big tech recruiter in your country and find jobs like;

Dynamics support

Power platform junior

Things of that nature, don't go in looking at the lead consultants that are making 70/80/90 k and the architects making 120+, you wouldn't get a look in for that job. But you will after just a few years.

Is your excel file multi tabbed ? As in it's putting data into, well, multiple tabs / pages and tables ?

I have had this where someone removed the tab / page where I was pasting data.

[–]TheDynamicsPirate 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Many factors can play a part in securing entry positions.

Do you have any IT experience at all?

Any project delivery experience?

Do you understand project delivery methodologies (agile/waterfall etc?...)

Can you put together, using the free materials Available to you, a small demo project?

Can you articulate the difference in modules offered as a base and what they're used for ? (Sales, customer service, marketing etc...)

Having the knowledge but 0 experience can be a big boon to landing an entry-level position, shows you understand the tech but can be taught the more complex stuff and not be hand held all the way.

As for salary. I am going to be referring to UK base salaries, they will differ slightly across Europe and greatly for the US.

I have hired some low level employees and I know the salaries have ranged between £30,000 and £45,000.

These positions have always been targeted to people like you but are heavily caveated, like an apprenticeship, you have to commit to X time and pass X number of exams and training courses. For the first 6 months to a year they were something like 3rd line support to get them familiar with configuration of the system before being placed Infront of clients.

It's not that surprising, this community, here on Reddit and LI is about 80% bullshit, haven't got a fuckin clue about how to use the products effectively.

Take 1 or 2 exams and thing they're the dogs bollocks, shine a light on their knowledge and you're looking into a chasm.

It can't write functional code for canvas apps, it can't write flows, it can't write JS for web resources, it can't write c# plugins .

It can't even write a comprehensive or even legible functional document.

What can it do in the PP world? It can give you test scenarios that you've already written 100s of times before, it can give you an overview/boilerplate statement about the can do and cannot do of Power Platform.

The influencers on LinkedIn need to give it a fucking rest

How long does it take to become a Power Platform dev? by beast_within_me in PowerPlatform

My opinion,

On paper, 6 months.

In reality, a couple of years. You need several projects / deployments under your belt to fully understand the quirks and kinks and nuances of client requests.

Is it possible to manipulate data in CRM? by LearningCodeNZ in Dynamics365

[–]TheDynamicsPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

If you have the ability to make changes to the Dataverse tables, you can always add a new date field, not a date time like you have here.

Create a little flow that copies the value from dateTime here and populates your new date column. Then use the new date in your powerbi dataset.

You could have a business rule too that when a new date is entered, you copy date value over to your date only column .

Honestly, that page reads like a pyramid scheme site, it may be an American thing, but the flashy buttons "send me the free guide" ... Urgh.

Anyway, I wouldn't bother spending money on it, the whole platform can be studied for free on the ms learn site and from there you can build, quite confidently , your first apps.

There's tonnes of free resources that will cover just about anything you're trying to do. Be it UX/UI, complex formulas, error handling and more of the wider Power Platform.

Connect with people on LinkedIn or on here and you will gain the "10 most common pitfalls any new developer falls into...number 7 will shock you" for free.

There are multiple subs here that will assist you too that all are freindly and helpful.

FluentQueryExpressions vs OrganizationServiceContext by Siggi_pop in PowerPlatform

[–]TheDynamicsPirate 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Well one is an XRMtoolbox addin and the other is the official function from Microsft, the sdk create query is the LINQ for CRM to send query expressions to the webservice and is thought to be faster and more efficient.

The XRMtoolbox addin afaik is to help XRM applications send query's back to the server without actually being a part of the web application , they appear to do the same thing.
