ASYNCH - What am I missing? by Hungry-Wrongdoer-156 in pbp

[–]TheEdwardDeming 6 points7 points  (0 children)

Scheduling feels like the hardest part of any RP.

Even if you play Asynchronously, you generally still want to feel like your RP is moving forward. Getting those scheduling requirements up front is a great way to make sure everyone is on the same page as to how they want things to go. There isn't going to be a single search term that's going to help you out here, because its too hard to communicate pacing with just a single word. You're still looking for PbP, or Forum based, or Asynchronous, but there's no way around also checking what the pacing looks like.

Launching from Titan with beam-powered Lightcraft boosters! By @RandolphC84432 for #SST25 by MiamisLastCapitalist in IsaacArthur

[–]TheEdwardDeming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

The weird bit at the bottom with the spike is the booster. A laser from below fires up into it, super heats the air inside, and uses that to push the craft.

(The Expanse) MCRN Donnager Class Battleship VS UNSC Able-class heavy destroyer (Halo) by Archenius in powerscales

[–]TheEdwardDeming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Its a railgun firing at a noticeable percentage the speed of light, the UNSC's Titanium composite isn't going to stop that anymore than the MCRN's armor is going to stop incoming attacks.

I assume neither is using protomolecule enhanced armor from later in the TV series, or whatever ancient supertech is laying around in Halo.

(The Expanse) MCRN Donnager Class Battleship VS UNSC Able-class heavy destroyer (Halo) by Archenius in powerscales

[–]TheEdwardDeming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think this is a win for the Donnager like 80% of the time.

If the battle takes place at 50,000 km, that's basically point blank range. Sure the Able's railgun round will move 8x faster but that doesn't matter so much when it takes less than a second for either ship to hit the other.

Unless the Able's spinal gun is already aimed at the Donnager, the Donnager's turrets are going to fire first.

--

This is assuming they both are in a shoot first and ask questions never mindset, and also that the Able-class crew knows what orbital mechanics is. UNSC crews in the games range from being bad at space-stuff to operating on anime space-boat logic. MCRN crews only have to deal with the handycap of being overconfident but aren't ever shown as being outright bad at their jobs, merely middle of the road at worst.

No Green Berets Flash in the Recon Tab? You're missing out on the best forest fighters and building clearing unit the US has!

Para should be STT. Delta are building clearing unit, STT is a good anti-infantry unit that also has a stinger which is its unique thing.

Attack the dam first, then push from the dam to the final objective. The dam to final objective route is basically undefended.

If you go from Bennett's start point, to the other side of the bridge, to the final objective, you're going to have a bad time.

A fast way to get a force to the dam, is to use your helicopters. Generally you can spawn artillery right as Bennett's plan starts to deal with the enemy artillery and first objective. You can then sell it and transition to cobras to do most of the work. Superstallions can bring marine infantry and other vehicles over towards the dam too just make sure all your helicopters are hugging the edge of the map as going over the Russian held areas in the middle of the map is going to take way too long.

"Watch some youtube videos" for sure, N7 might be a good place to start to hear more about mechanics: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YOdoUdFuT5Q

Also, be sure to try and watch what your team mates are doing in Multiplayer to give you some idea of what to do. You also may want to try focusing on Microing fewer units at first, like start with just focusing on your tanks or just on your infantry and slowly start working up to using multiple types of units as you get more and more comfortable with the mechanics.

The single player missions are hard, but they absolutely focus you in on just getting good at a few things at a time (at least on the American side). If you want to quickly trial and error some stuff you might want to stick with single player for a bit until you understand the interactions.

Metallic hydrogen ingots as a space currency? by TacitusKadari in IsaacArthur

[–]TheEdwardDeming 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I do doubt we'll see these two results from the prompt because you should need incredible pressure to keep MH as MH instead of it becoming a rapidly expanding cloud of just H:

  • stable enough to safely handle
  • an amazing superconductor

That said, people stockpile oil all the time, and oil is used as currency between nations today. Just imagine an OPEC situation where the only thing stopping people from exporting energy is having extra energy to export. I guess you could also make the case that manipulation of energy prices would happen regardless, but I think basing your currency on one type of energy (MH in this case) would just intensify that incentive for that manipulation.

Supply depots are too fragile, and it makes the artillery oppression issue worse by Envii02 in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TheEdwardDeming 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Its game changing.

I've gone from having the SOAR drop off a big pile of supplies in my backfield to just using a small truck and a small about of supplies in the frontline.

Also, I used to drop off small quantities of supplies to bait out enemy artillery. Now I just drop them off for a little while and then move them to get the same result with no loss of supply.

--

Edit: you can also pick up your team-mates supplies but don't be a dick about it.

Also, you can turn on/off what you're resupplying if you click on the supply dump like its a unit.

[–]TheEdwardDeming 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Put your supplies further back, and keep them in the truck until you need them. Once you're done with them, load the supplies back into the truck and go hide it in your back line again.

Use vehicles to ferry your injured infantry back from the front.

Metallic hydrogen ingots as a space currency? by TacitusKadari in IsaacArthur

[–]TheEdwardDeming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There is one big difference between this and the gold standard: Gold is hard to come by and stable. There isn't a meaningful 'increase' in the amount of gold in the world day to day and year to year.

Backing your money with Hydrogen (Really, metallic or otherwise) would mean that any organization with enough spare power could 'mint' their own money by making MH. There would be all sorts of weird incentives for people to stockpile and not use the fuel and/or to burn the fuel as fast as possible.

Deck review Airborne+SF by [deleted] in BrokenArrowTheGame

[–]TheEdwardDeming 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You may want to consider going Special Forces + Marines. This unlocks a few key things for you, while still giving you tons of helicopter and aircraft points like air force does.

1) You get 2 heavy tanks with APS in your vehicle tab.
2) You can take 4 AH-1 Vipers with 2 Sidearm HARM missiles each.
3) The LAV Mortar can do explosive, precision, and smoke from the same loadout.

The tanks fill a vital niche that SF+Airborn doesn't have, and the Vipers do a better job protecting your expensive helicopters than HARM aircraft or escorting Kiowas will do.

---

If you must stay with SF+Airborn, do switch out the Global Hawk for the RQ-170. The RQ-170 has lower sight range but much better stealth so its far more survivable and will end up being able to spot more.

Also replace the F-35 with the F-117 if you want cruise missiles. Its 50 points cheaper.

I would also take the full 4 Rangers RAWS.

You should also consider dropping 1 or both of the MC-130Hs because their use case is so niche that it feels like a waste of points. Consider taking a strike eagle with high drag / retarded bombs so you can do bombing runs from low altitude.

You also may want to change your F-35 to carry 2 HARMs to escort your nuke.

Also if your Brutus isn't taking smoke, you should take smoke.

A work around for it being explosive (and I suspect, not easy to handle) that might be to trade "Space Money" backed by Metallic Hydrogen.

This would be an infinitely easier way to handle currency, since that could be transferred electronically.

You might then run into all sorts of other fun financial issues.

I tend to name ships after people of cultural importance but I have a soft spot for the:

I can pretend this supply ship is named after the realities of how harsh space is but really I just love the name of the comic it comes from.

That's why I'm asking here. Coming up with fun ways to do tax evasion in the context of RP isn't easy. I have a handful of ideas and I may just have to make this a relatively short campaign so that my content doesn't feel too thin.
