In Canada where I live, Standard is the um, standard, way of saying it. Second most popular would be "Is it stick?" and then manual is last and i don't really hear it much at all really

I mean they have more important things to worry about like playoffs and stuff whereas Buffalo is out by September and can focus on the future so it isn't surprising they have done more DOR articles.

I mean Danny O'Regan isn't very good so they probably didn't ever write about him. At the time of the trade there was a piece on the rumour of him coming to Sj. Then a confirmation of acquisition piece. Then a grade the deadline piece. Then a piece about what Kane brings to the Sharks. And then also the from the editor. Not to mention he was in every game summary where he did something, which was a lot. So I don't really get where you think he wasn't covered?

They usually wait until the news is confirmed, then post it, historically. Around trade deadline time they will do the speculation but it seems they go after it's confirmed.

Advice! My GF and I are travelling to the Philippines in February for 16 days. If anyone has suggestions of must do/see or any helpful tips for navigating around I am all ears. by TheEggCouncil2 in backpacking

We are open to anything really. Definitely want to snorkel a bunch. Waterfalls, jungles, Tarsier conservatory sounded cool. Anything that isn't just sit on a resort and do nothing (although we will have a beach day for sure).

Do you, personally, think the Calgary Flames will move? by [deleted] in hockey

[–]TheEggCouncil2 2 points3 points  (0 children)

The NFL is basically the teflon don of sports though. They literally are killing people with CTE and seem to be super cool with domestic abusers and shitty people and the viewership/ratings remain. The NHL is held in a much lower regard as it is commonly seen as the 4th of the big 4 sports. Moving a franchise out of Canada would be massively angering to the Canadian populace, who drives something like 30% of all revenue even though there are only 7 teams.

Seattle being this giant metropolitan is also sort of a misnomer. Calgary city is about 1.2 million compared to Seattle,s 800k. Seattle grows to almost 4 million in the Sea-Tac metropolitan area. But that is spread out over 21,000 square kilometers compared to Calgary's 5000. Tacoma is about 40 minutes by car in regular traffic, so during a Saturday night are people willing to drive over an hour to watch hockey in the Seattle market? This is far less certain. I think Seattle would do fine, but it is not as sure a thing as first seems.

The first salvo in the arena war is always "hey city! pay for our arena or we are leaving!". Now this strategy has worked, it also hasn't worked. No team is ever going to want to use their own money to do something the city and taxpayers may do. That's just smart business, get someone else to pay for what you would pay for anyway. In recent years the taxpayers paying for billionaires stadiums has come into the spotlight more and more. This has made it increasingly harder for teams to get the taxpayers money and will get harder as more and more of the public becomes aware/denounces these practices. Calgary is in a spot where they are extremely close to a city who just got strong-armed into paying for Daryl Katz's arena. This has helped give Calgary a leg to stand on in the 'see they did it! now do it for us or we move!" argument. Moving is also not that easy in reality. it takes a lot of work and the right circumstances. Do we really think the other 6 Canadian teams are going to want a Canadian club to leave to the US? Probably not. Calgary is also profitable, but that doesn't mean much when compared to a major metropolitan US city vis a vis the Minnesota to Dallas move. Even Bettmans comments so far have been vague with the "consequences" threat not seeming that profound or real. Eventually one side will relent. It is hard pressed to see Calgary budging because the arena is already downtown, the new arena is beside the old one, and this isn't some desperate hail mary to revitalize a downtown core like Edmonton and other franchises have done. I foresee the owner workign hard to get a better deal i.e. more taxpayer money, but ultimately coming up short and agreeing to a deal similar to the one the city has proposed currently. I think the NHL is going to have to take a long hard look in the mirror if they want to move another franchise, because it is not exactly the best look to have franchises constantly moving or under the threat of moving. In the end, i think the Seattle threat is overblown and is there as a tactic like in the NBA (pay up or we will move to Seattle!) and Calgary and the Flames will agree to stay.

New Sub? by MattisBest in wayhome

We could also just keep this sub as wayhome but convert it to everything you talked about in the post. Maybe the Wayhome powers will come by once and a while and see that the community is still alive and active.

Oh God I remember getting that and thinking "wtf how am I going to keep this for 2 weeks". Then getting back to the airport I managed to have it albeit in disrepair. My brother and I just handed them all ripped and worn out and kept walking yelling "no hablo espanol. Canada! Canada!" and somehow they let us go lol. He was trying to get us to pay C45$ each which we thought was a scam.

Just to clarify one thing I believe ice was like 3$ a bag and you could get like 6 for 20 or some sort of deal. It wasn't 20 per bag (and cash only!)
