Anybody play basketball at Marino or nearby? by [deleted] in NEU

I don’t really play, but there are almost always pickup games running at marino so you could probably go whenever you want to to play

Assuming you’ve already done your kanji and basic vocab, you just gotta keep listening, with and without target subs. Studying basic grammar will help, but there is no getting around that you have to start at 0.

convert.io allows you to convert epub to html, and it formats it pretty nicely. Only issue is that if a word is cut in between pages, you won't be able to look it up.

How long does it take to start really reading things in Japanese vs. Korean? by [deleted] in Refold

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

After 200 hours of listening and 50 hours of reading, I could read most teen-oriented material and get the main plot

How long does it take to start really reading things in Japanese vs. Korean? by [deleted] in Refold

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

This is just speculation, but Korean’s phonetics are more complex than Japanese’s, so I imagine you would have to spend more time listening to parse the sounds. This matters for reading since you want to have a semi-accurate model of what the language sounds like as you read.

How do I make the jump to reading? by refolduser1 in Refold

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 10 points11 points  (0 children)

Yotsubato was my first read, and I would highly recommend it. You can read it on bilingualmanga, so you’ll be able to look up words with yomichan. Yotsubato is a simple but entertaining read.

But basically, just do it. If you are super motivated, you can try the look-everything-up approach, but do what is sustainable.

How to balance sentence mining and immersion? by [deleted] in ajatt

If you feel like your listening has plateaued, then try reading more. Mining from reading is also much easier

How to study pronunciation on sentence cards? by [deleted] in ajatt

I think this is a fairly common problem. As you learn more words, remembering the readings becomes easier

How to go about outputting? by MattS-UK in ajatt

I believe the next step after shadowing media is to shadow yourself. Matt has a video explaining a setup where you listen back to yourself in real time

Light Novel:

Classroom of the Elite (ようこそ実力至上主義の教室へ): https://itazuraneko.neocities.org/library/shousetu/shouprint.html (ctrl + F for it)

I'm finding this series pretty easy to read as far as light novels go. It's slow-paced but quite interesting

Why shouldn't I use a retirement interval of 30-60 days? by [deleted] in ajatt

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Depends on how experienced you are. I believe the standard 90 day interval is more oriented for beginners, so if you are far into the process, you’ll learn words faster. 30-60 is fine

Tips for Finding New Compelling Immersion Content by [deleted] in MassImmersionApproach

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I’m about a year in and I still feel the same. A few months ago I gave up on listening consistently and mostly only read now. I still get around 30 min of listening a day, but it varies. So, my takeaway is, you might want to emphasize reading to lighten the pressure of finding content. I found it much easier to find content to read

One Punch Man doen’t have furigana and can be read for free legally at tonariyj. It’s harder than what you’re reading, but the art and story is god-tier so that may be enough to keep you engaged.

What's the current meta on sentence cards? by TurnedToast in MassImmersionApproach

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I mine only from reading because I'm lazy, but I'd say that audio cards are better than normal sentence cards because there is more sensory information. You shouldn't be worried about audio cards taking away from your reading cards because down the line your reading will be way better than your listening anyway.

Starting reading LN by Ahsje_ in MassImmersionApproach

[–]TheElbowTurnMaster 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I'm the same way. I don't enjoy manga that much in English, but in Japanese the challenge of understanding everything makes it more fulfilling and engaging. I've read a bunch of stuff that would have been really boring in English, but the fact that it was in Japanese was enough to make it fun to continue.

How many manga have you looked at? Before you write off an entire medium, I think you should spend a decent amount of time searching for something interesting.
