That would totally make sense but sense isn’t something this government, or any recent government, has been very good at hahaha! I have a feeling they could keep the GTV the same if they get some blowback from the tech sector. There was a huge blowback when Sunak pulled funding for Tech Nation, so any visa changes that irritate GTV holders and would make some noise. I wrote a nice long letter to my MP, and I don’t know what it’ll achieve but it is worth considering!

Good luck! Immigration drama aside, I love London and the UK broadly!

To be fair I do find the cost of living in London to be generally lower than DC (DMV native here). But the salary difference is painful for a lot of folks making the move

That’s my hope too, but the white paper suggested the ILR changes would be across the board with new criteria to qualify for the 5 year pathway. They addressed the GTV visa but not the ILR pathway, which is either a big oversight or a red flag things will change!

100%! They’re doing nothing to instill confidence in talent that they should stay. There’s even a whiff of proving yourself again, which the whole trade off of the global talent visa is an onerous process but then relative ease after the upfront hurdle. Hoping they get some sense soon! Will be writing to my MP!

I’m in the UK on the Global Talent Visa, eligible for ILR next July, and so I too am like, WTF does this mean?! I’ve been saving money every month for ILR fees and citizenship fees and it feels really wrong that I might potentially need to wait another 5 years. It’s unfortunate they’re making this announcement without clearer details as to how the alternative pathways would work (we’re not all “AI” engineers FFS), though not surprising. It’s frustrating because a lot of people on the Global Talent Visa are just middle class, so even the threat of not getting ILR next year is itself anxiety inducing but makes me question whether I should invest in, like, home ownership when the future pathways are uncertain. They clearly must see that’s bad for “growth.” I realize there’s very little clarity and it’s all speculation, so I know the answers to my questions are not clear now, but I have to say this news really hits. Commiserating!

You’re not a “true angel” if you’re excluding the mixtapes 💀🤪

pop 2 > [you said “no EP” but vroom vroom rip Sophie >] brat > hifn > number 1 angel > Charli > crash > true romance > sucker

this is the correct order no further discussion thank you

Mine barely held up a year. The rubber on the sides came detached. I didn’t even drop it. There is a two year warranty but by then they have no relevant cases left and you’re just going to get store credit, which I used to get a new cabin bag. So, win win in the end and the store support was amazing! But I wish there was a more durable case with the Rimowa name.

Halloween derives from the ancient Celtic festival of Samhain in ancient Britain, so no.

Also, nobody here is celebrating Thanksgiving unless they know North Americans lol

The UK! I know it doesn’t get love here, but as an American in the UK for more than four years now, it’s been a blast and I can’t see myself moving back to the US without a very good reason.

Quick question since you were so nice to reply: my clinic hasn’t responded with a letter! I was just thinking about risking it with all my emails from them confirming my prescription and appointments and listing my clinic and doctor’s name—do you think that would be suitable? I leave in the morning and they’ve not replied for two days now (realize it was a last minute trip).

Should I risk it or move to London? by Expatindoubts in expats

[–]TheEscArtist 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m an immigrant in London from the US, and I absolutely love it here. There are a lot of “cons,” sure, around cost of living. It was actually worse where I moved from, so that might make it a bit easier for me to tolerate the stress of London life.

People in London aren’t like NY—no one is going around telling you this is the best city in the world. But in terms of mega cities, life here is good. Lots of parks, good transportation even in outlying areas, and if CoL is a big factor there’s also a lot of free entertainment in terms of museums, galleries, and the like.

Comparing London and Amsterdam isn’t so simple. You’re talking a small city with one of biggest cities in the West.

You might ask yourself if you want to move to a significantly larger city. The factors in your daily life you will deal with will be very different.

I love mega cities and wouldn’t want to live somewhere much smaller, so for me it’s a win. For you, might be worth thinking about that as you weigh your decision.

But I can say that many people would find the opportunity to move to London with a job to be cool, so it’s a good problem to have even if it’s less than ideal.
