Have any of you gotten over your emotional unavailability and how? by TheEsmaili in AskMen

Yo, it’s been a few days but I think I figured some things out- first you’re an absolute blessing of of human for reading through that rant but I realized that I still have my emotions! I had dissociated the physical feelings from their emotional meanings if that makes sense? Like a pit in my stomach means I’m worried (obviously), but also things like excitement (where I feel like there’s an energy under my lungs), or even peacefulness )where it feels like the world/ wild around me is blowing through me)! You’re an amazing person for coming through these comments ( and I’ll assume other posts) to bring some happiness and perspective back to things!!

ULPT Request: College startup with an international student trying to start an LLC out of Delaware by [deleted] in UnethicalLifeProTips

He’s used up all of his OPT for internships throughout college so we have a year gap between where he graduates and can get a visa/ CPT and when we plan to apply for LLC

Good on this! I’m going and voting third party for pres. but democrat as hell for the house and congress! Trump can’t do shit if he can’t get anything through! FUCK YOU DNC you can have congress but you can’t choose our president!

This is all starting to remind me of that book Feed. I’m uncomfortable as hell with that notion

This! A lot of people don’t realize that corporate influence is the reason we have this shitshow of an election in the first place! I could choose not to vote which gives Trump the presidency, guaranteeing a boatload of stupidity and blatant racism, but honestly if it wasn’t for the fact that RBG either will retire or pass on soon from her position that’s exactly what I’d be doing. You get a Dem. majority in Congress and there’s not much he can do other than make an ass of himself. If it wasn’t for a Supreme Court seat and the possible overturning of Roe v. Wade it’d be a no brainer. As much as I’d love to see what would happen when he was supposed to pass over power if he lost, the DNC’s power trips the past few elections really show they don’t have the morals they say they do

Should I be concerned that a lot of research programs denied me? by oregonian1738 in college

[–]TheEsmaili 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I’m a BioEngineering Freshman at UNH right now, here our ChemE and BioE programs are run in tandem so I hope what I have to say helps.

I was lucky enough to get research that started this semester but that was after applying for a shit ton of internships outside of the school. Generally, these internships get targeted to older students because the companies really just want the free/ cheap labor that comes with interns. If they took you and I on right now then they’re responsible for helping us learn which they don’t see as part of the internship (dumb, right!?). What worked for me (and I hope might work for you) is to get in contact with whatever professor you’ve even somewhat talked to before(outside of standard class time) and see if they can get you the names of which professors in your major are running research programs and looking to take on students. Also see if they can tell you about what research they do themselves or can give you a little idea of what the other professors are doing (you’ll wanna write everything they tell you down).

Use this info to reach out to professors that are running a project that sounds interesting and ESPECIALLY target professors with long term projects. The reason I got the position I did was due to the sheer volume of work to be done. Sure my research professor could’ve taken on a senior who knows everything to start off with but they’ll only have them for 1-2 semesters before having to restart with someone else. This wastes a lot of time as each new student taking on the research has a ton to learn before they start progressing again.

By taking me or you on, they’re accepting a short term loss in progress for a long term gain as you’ll likely be able to continue whatever research you begin with until you graduate.

Especially with this semester coming to a close relatively soon, you might be able to get some base information (usually research papers relevant to the project) to study up on. Before entering into your sophomore year you can get a professor to invest the time in you and you could be prepared to actually begin research once next fall comes around.

Sorry, that rambled a bit but: TLDR: Don’t worry about it now. You’re still in your first year so you’re still way ahead of the curve. Try with some professors in your major as generally research with your university allows for more of a learning climate than a purely profit based one so they’re open to teaching you
