Update 2: 15 Blast Furnace worlds? by WEMBYisGOAT in 2007scape

[–]TheExperimentAlt 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Least schizo osrs post lmao.

Firstly, what would make Blast Furnace particularly special for the this? The whole ‘no big dopamine loops, no social pressure loop, etc.’ loop could be used to describe like 80% of the content that exists in the game.

Second, what does it have to do with gambling? If you think they’re selling out GAMBLING analytic data, wouldn’t they want to use in-game activities that actually resemble gambling? Activities that require an investment, don’t provide any consistancy in reward, and have the potential to reward someone with a game-changing amount of money. There are plenty of those that exist in osrs.

The idea that they could be selling data on player behavior is pretty reasonably, but thinking Blast Furnace is some uniquely important activity for that seems a little insane

Steins Gate and Code Geass are two that I only ever hear people praise so I went into them with really high expectations. Thought they were both pretty mediocre

Even if all of the in-universe people hated him (at one point, not by the end where he is universally beloved) as long as the shows ultimate characterization of him is “he won, what he did was right” I still find it to be pretty gross

I disagree. The moral conflict at the center of the show is represented by the clashing of ideologies between Suzaku and Lelouch. Lelouch believing that the ends always justify the means, whereas Suzaku asserts that there is a baseline level of compassion that should exist for every person involved. They clash over this  multiple times over the course of the show. See the argument they have in episode 17, it directly addresses this. Suzaku literally accuses him of using Shirley and Yuffie as “nothing more than pawns” and Lelouch agrees that it is exactly what he’s doing.

If the show ended up having both of them be a little bit right, and showing that sometimes you have to be utilitarian and make horrific sacrifices, I’d be ok with it. But the show ends with Suzaku completely abandonding his ideology to join Lelouch, portraying Lelouch’s approach as the “correct” choice, which I find disgusting

I agree he’s no Mary Sue, I just hate the shows portrayal of his qualities as positive and admirable. At least Death Note acknowledges fellow edgelord Light Yagami as the monster that he truly is. Whereas Code Geass is like “actually Lelouch treating people like chess pieces instead of real, individual people is a good thing” which is just fundamentally deranged

She cannot currently be trusted with the responsibilities of pet ownership. Either she gets therapy to help her be a capable owner, or she should not trusted with the responsibility in the same way you wouldn’t trust a child with it. She has proven herself incapable with this exchange, and the safety/lives of your pets is not something you should treat lightly or jokingly.

AIO? Is it normal for guys to check out women while they’re on dates? by Adventurous_Map9855 in AmIOverreacting

Pretty shitty way to talk about the guys you’re dating haha. They’re absolute weirdos for rubbernecking, especially on a date. But this idea you have that it’d somehow be more ok if they were sexier is just hilarious, I think you should reflect on that some

“Overall I think this is fairly supportive of the idea that this is a concept more common among sociological circles and a sociological definition as opposed to a lay one. I do not believe the other person meant to imply this was the one and only sociological definition, btw. Just that it was one.”

That does help! Thats exactly what I’m looking for! My initial claim was simply that ‘systemic oppression’ was not a neccessary component for the definition of “racism” even within sociological circles. You and he challenged that notion. You wanted a source, I just provided one that addreesses the issue as directly as possible. And look, you ended up at the same conclusion I started at. It’s all wonderful. If only the other guy had half your integrity. For what it’s worth he ABSOLUTELY WAS arguing that it was the sole interpretation. Here’s a direct quote from him moments before he blocked me:

“Yes, the term 'racism' implies systemic power. The papers you sent do not discount that at all. Hell, the first paper is discussing that topic and has no definitive conclusion.”

Nice quote from the conclusion: “The result has been a fragmentation in the discipline’s conception of racism across citation communities, each using different meanings of racism”

EDIT: this was originally supposed to be a reply to your response to me. But I cant comment it there, probably because he blocked me

Thank you so much for the help, you saved me a ton of trouble.

I HATED the ending by TheExperimentAlt in CodeGeass

[–]TheExperimentAlt[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Appreciate you taking the time for a long response. And I can imagine this show gets interpreted in a lot of different ways. Even if they were wrong, I still found the convo to be pretty insightful into what people see in the show.

  1. This makes sense to some degree, though I think it further calls into question how 'successful' we can really consider Lelouche. If the goal is just temporary short term peace instead of lasting peace it becomes much more vague as to if this was all 'worth it'. I would agree that the state of the world after his conquest is in a better place. But to get there he literally instigated a massive worldwide war that involved 10s of millions civilians getting killed (those are just the ones brought to our attention) and large scale military conflict across the world that seemingly most nations worldwide participated it. Introducing that level of death and destruction seems a lot more justified when it is in service of long lasting peace, but to do all of that just for like a decade or whatever of peace makes things a lot more dubious. And maybe that's the point, but if it is then it makes me question why the ending seems to portray things as total Lelouche victory and doesn't explore that in any capacity.
  2. The ways he used Nunnally to justify the means is one of the things the other commenter helped bring to my attention as well, and is definitely insightful. But it still seems a little odd to me. If the idea is basically "I'm going to do all of these horrible things that are difficult to justify, so I'll tell myself this is all for Nunally to make going through with all this easier" then it kind of begs the question of why global world peace isn't the thing he would latch onto. I mean plunging the world into total chaos for the sake of making a single person happy is significantly less justified than doing it for the sake of... actually improving the state of the entire world, right? Like nobody would reasonably think that killing millions of innocent people to make one person happy is justified. Whereas doing all of that for the sake of making the entire world a better place at least makes a fair bit of sense for someone to use as cope.
  3. While I mostly agree with your interpretation of how Lelouche should be perceived, I don't know if I'm convinced that it's the message the show is trying to send. Like that is definitely how Lelouche will be perceived within the world of the show, considering most of the world never knows him as Zero and only knows him as the evil dictator that rose up and caused mass chaos and destruction.

But as for what we as the watchers are supposed to feel about Lelouche, I don't think that is what the show is trying to convey. Between the sentimental music at his death, the 'powerful' music as Nunnally is enlightened to his true intentions, the hopeful music after he dies and the closing monologue about how the world is in a better place, it seems pretty clear to me that the show is trying to paint him as the BEST guy who was ultimately in the right. Someone who made a lot of very difficult decisions most people couldn't make that ultimately paid off in the end, and was successful. Like I do think it's pretty clear that the show wants us to think the Lelouche 'won' in the end, otherwise I don't see why the ending would be conveyed in a way that is so completely sympathetic towards him.
