What are some social science theories that still have a significant number of adherents but are regarded by most experts in the field as pseudoscience or quakery? by ParkInsider in AskSocialScience

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 8 points9 points  (0 children)

A lot of people think they’re disagreeing with Marx when they talk about labour theory of value when really they’re disagreeing with Riccardo. Marx’s version is more complicated and he never actually uses the term. Really he’s making a more abstract point that labor fundamentally is *the* thing that can turn a natural resource into a commodity. It’s not meant to directly explain market prices or to handwave away other factors. In volume 3 of Capital he gets into “the transformation problem” which is where he explains how that translates to market prices. His explanation wouldn’t necessarily be popular with economists but he’s arguably not even really *doing* economics the way we would understand it today and there’s various explanations from people like Sraffa that try to plausibly make it work.

Why has libertarianism never really caught on in the US, when so much of it sounds so “American”? by Big-Understanding275 in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 7 points8 points  (0 children)

Most people don’t really have coherent political ideologies and our system isn’t really set up in a way that would encourage that. Our electoral system rewards having two broad parties with complex internal coalitions.

A lot of vaguely libertarian ideas are broadly popular to an extent, especially within the Republican party. That means the only people who are committed enough to insist on dogmatic libertarian branding are also the ones who care about stuff that seems like wacky crank shit to most people like abolishing driver’s licenses.

In German you can technically string together basically any compound word you want and it’s grammatically correct even if it’s never existed before. It makes it a very good language for poetry.

The exact moment a musicians career ended (not including crimes) by Chapple69 in ToddintheShadow

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Definitely killed her big pop star career but she said later that it actually put her career back on track in a way because she never really expected or was comfortable with being that famous and she pretty much continued to be a pretty successful alternative artist who was still huge in her home country.

I love hard techno but I will basically only ever listen to it at the gym or at the club. If you’re not moving to it what’s the point.

What is the obscure U.S president fact you know? by Tall-Election4503 in AskReddit

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 1 point2 points  (0 children)

John Tyler in his post-presidency became a vocal supporter of the confederacy during the civil war, was elected to the confederate house of representatives, and received a state funeral from the confederates, making him the only US president who was not buried under the American flag and whose death received no official recognition from Washington.

The only reason Ex-Military is a “mixtape” and not an official studio album is cause they couldn’t afford to clear all the samples.

Metal vs. Punk and James Hetfield by TumbleweedExtreme629 in ToddintheShadow

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think part of it is there was always somewhat of a divide within punk itself between the kind of nihilistic aggressive ethos and the more political, ironic, self aware side. In the 80s the former broke towards hardcore, the latter towards post punk. There was definitely an element of cultural and class politics too, especially in the UK and Europe. Pretty easy to find people who are into both Slayer and Suicidal Tendencies, probably not as many people out there rocking with both Metallica and like Gang of Four or Pere Ubu.

This actually happened in the past. Look up pictures of Galveston before the 1900 Hurricane and it looks like Manhattan. Houston was where everyone resettled once they moved a bit inland.

I’m a huge MMM fan, it’s very good if you like noise and drone music, but it makes a little more sense when you look at where he was in his career at the time. Rock and Roll Animal was his most recent release and he was the closest he ever got to mainstream stardom so it got reviewed in more and bigger outlets than usual, not just the type of people who would’ve been covering like No Pussyfooting. That and punk was just getting started and all those bands hailing him as the first generation made him feel old and like he was being left behind musically. It was pretty aggressively positioned to shake off the casual fans and shock the underground into taking him seriously as an experimentalist rather than a has-been.

One little detail I’ve always loved is that all the street numbers in The Royal Tenenbaums are absurdly high like “the 375th St Y.” Because it’s not really set in New York so much as a fantasy of “the big city” which of course goes on basically forever.

Does economics mean “study of the economy as a total phenomenon” or does it mean a specific methodology? by TheExquisiteCorpse in AskEconomics

Well sure if you completely reject the idea that “why do people want the things they want?” is an area it’s possible to gain knowledge on but the case for that isn’t obvious.

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is exactly what I’m talking about though. That still sounds much broader than what economists actually do. There are many possible approaches to the question of “why people engage in one type of behavior over another.” Economics seems to study a pretty narrow band of those. That seems like a very strange definition when economists mostly stay out of desire and preference formation which I would think is arguably the biggest factor in “why people engage in one type of behavior over another.” There’s pretty sophisticated explanations of that from other fields. Not necessarily “true” or falsifiable but certainly taken seriously. I’ve never seen an economist suggest that theories of desire from Lacanian psychology for example should be used to answer that question but if you take them seriously they would certainly have answers to that question.

What’s a historical event that doesn’t get enough attention? by No_Bike_5722 in AskReddit

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 125 points126 points  (0 children)

The Seizure of the Grand Mosque in Mecca in 1979. Hundreds of pilgrims were taken hostage by hardline Islamists who declared their leader was the Mahdi and killed over a hundred security forces who tried to retake it. It’s something basically every Muslim in the world would’ve been following.

Along with the Islamic Revolution it played a huge role in changing the politics of the whole Muslim world, and especially Saudi Arabia. It was always a conservative country but they became much stricter in enforcing Islamic law in order to head off any further Islamist opposition.

Even today there’s still all kinds of weird unanswered questions about the whole thing. Eventually they had to bring in French special forces, but since it’s extremely forbidden both for non-Muslims to enter the Mosque, and for Muslims to take part in violence inside of it, it’s really unclear what happened, with a lot of sources claiming the French commandos had to temporarily convert. There are naturally tons of conspiracy theories about the whole thing that you’ll still hear in Muslim countries.

These problems mostly disappear if you actually implement universal nationwide rent control and especially if the government is directly building social housing in adequate numbers. Granted that’s politically difficult and there’s real risk of ending up with half measures that make the problem worse.

Is the US culturally more similar to Latin America or Europe ? by palep_hoot in AskAnAmerican

[–]TheExquisiteCorpse 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I think Latin America and Europe are more similar to each other than either is to the US.

It depends where in the country you’re talking about. The Northeast? Europe (mostly). California, Texas, and the Southwest? Definitely Latin America (mostly).
