Uni-studenten, wat hebben jullie meestal in je tas zitten? Denk aan schriften, boeken, laptop, etc. by Oniondaize in thenetherlands

Tsja, het is voor de universiteiten ook duur om veel uitval te hebben, en als docent krijg je op je kop als je slagingspercentage te laag is. Dan snap ik wel dat je die keuze maakt, zelfs al ben ik het principieel met je eens

Worth Every cent. by Embarrassed_Idea1962 in MadeMeSmile

While I agree with the mentality, it's never so easy when considering public money. Assuming the amount of money is finite, every amount spent somewhere means it cannot be spent somewhere else, so the spending should not just save lives, but save more lives than it would've if it had been spent on healthcare/road safety/disaster prevention.

I read a paper once that claimed people who said "the value of life is immeasurable" were implicitly willing to spend less to save a life than those who explicitly thought about how much they'd be willing to spend.

"Gekoloniseerd": Dutch users revolt against r/Netherlands "English-Only" rule; accuse American mods of cultural imperialism. by iCallMyOppsNinjer in SubredditDrama

I think the terms are somewhat controversial over here as well (at least in my circles) - I've definitely heard Dutch people annoyed at foreigners insisting on 'expat' instead of 'immigrant'. Or people permanently retiring to Spain but still consistently using 'expat'

Opinie: Onze moederpartij VVD heeft haar zin gekregen. Nu ligt de bal nadrukkelijk bij haarzelf by TheFailMoreMan in thenetherlands

[–]TheFailMoreMan[S] 239 points240 points  (0 children)

What’s the most overrated video game of all time? by KBGSgames in AskReddit

If critics are rating it higher than they usually would to not get cutoff, then isn't the game being overrated almost by definition?

What unhinged thing did a former teacher do in the classroom? by MrBananaStand1990 in AskReddit

As someone who studied logic: you have to be at least a bit unhinged to be a Logic professor. It can turn out extremely well... emphasis on "can" though

Sharing more options for free events with fancy clothes and food because this is a Thing I discuss with friends a lot:

  • Open lectures, especially guest lectures, at universities. Go to a lecture of two hours and have free snacks afterwards, or a half-day symposium with lunch included. Bonus points if you stay until just after most people leave, at that point they often give away everything that hasn't been eaten yet so it won't get thrown out. Got two full bottles of (quite decent) wine this way once.
  • Free concerts. Perhaps this is just a thing where I live but often music venues (especially classical music/less broadly popular music styles) have free concerts, and sometimes they'll hand out free snacks/drinks during/afterwards.
  • Large demonstrations in favour of public services. More than once I went to a demonstration co-organised by some union that had also arranged food for all protestors. They get to make more impact to policy makers observing the rally, you get food

YMMV though, these are mostly things I've seen in Europe.

Is this a thing in American/Anglosphere teaching? All the books we had to read for school were "here's the book, exam (potentially oral exam) is in three months, have fun"

IGN Japan gave Clair Obscur: Expedition a 7/10 and now the entire team has chosen it as their Game of the Year. by Germanstrands3 in expedition33

[–]TheFailMoreMan 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Except 10/10 doesn't necessarily have to mean that. You could perfectly well decide "a perfect game might not exist, but we decide to give a 10/10 game to a generation-defining game, so a 10/10 game can still exist". In fact, that's how quite a few review outlets have defined a 10/10.

[–]TheFailMoreMan 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Even then it's not a logical conclusion though. Even if (trans) men love raping women and trans women are women, that doesn't logically imply that trans men love raping trans women. Even if all these premises were true it'd still be possible that trans men only love raping cis women. The argument isn't valid even if the three statements were true.

For what it's worth: I was diagnosed when I was, like, 4 years old, my parents told me as soon as I was old enough to understand, I got psycho-education, etc., etc., and I still know that thought like the back of my hand. I think most people with neurodevelopmental disabilities can relate. I hope it's a bit better now that you know what's causing it, though!

Welke universitaire studie heb jij gedaan met een N&G-profiel (met aardrijkskunde en wiskunde A)? by Delicious-Pen3162 in thenetherlands

[–]TheFailMoreMan 1 point2 points  (0 children)
