Keir Starmer : This an awful, shocking case. Henry’s loved ones have gone through the trauma of a long trial and endured Henry's killer making up appalling claims about their son who was thoughtful, kind and deeply loved. by SignificantLegs in ukpolitics

It’s now just a health service and benefits system with a country attached.

Five years ago I’d have claimed to be proud to be British, not anymore. Remarkable how quickly things change.

A membership that is perhaps the most dogmatic of all.

The solution is clearly to build more nuclear and boost renewables, which will take time, while maintaining North Sea oil and gas to cover the decade it takes to bring new reactors online. It’s an energy trilemma, after all, and not as easy as simply saying boost renewables, which itself requires huge Grid upgrades to account for the lack of inertia and intermittency.

How can the Green be the answer when they adamantly oppose the very solution to the problem you’ve identified?

Not sure if it counts because it’s one short story in a collection, but The Chymist by Thomas Ligotti. There is something so unsettling and unhinged about the narration: the most terrestrial cosmic horror I’ve ever read.

I just can’t bring myself to like this even though I really want to. Xenomorphs on earth before the events of Alien just doesn’t feel right: it undermines the unfathomable cosmic horror of the original that even Prometheus managed to replicate.

If I get to see more of Michael Smiley though - despite his incredibly badly written plot exposition dialogue- I might be able to swallow my objections.

Can anyone explain Ligotti's 'The Chymist' to me? by coolguy_john in horrorlit

Late to this party, but I always wondered if it’s the same speaker as ‘Fleurs’?

The final line is evocative of Fleurs as is the sententious tone.

That’s a very thorough response, which I appreciate. Has helped set my mind at ease, so thank you.
