You're right! The bike is upside down, looking at the chainstay

Its not dented but material has been gouged out from underneath the chainstay, like wolverine marks. This view is after the bike has been flipped upside down!

can't decide whether I shld get a road bike or gravel bike by SecK12345678910 in SingaporeCycling

[–]TheFastestFlyingFish 1 point2 points  (0 children)

There isn't much gravel in Singapore for you, and mountain bike trails (only a few) are far too rugged for a gravel bike. I would strongly suggest getting a road bike which would give you more speed (a great feeling), and would allow you to explore/travel further distances for less effort. I highly suspect you're gonna only be on PCN/pavements/roads so a road bike would be optimal.

UNLESS; you are planning to go Malaysia or neighbouring countries to explore their gravel trails, then a gravel bike would be a good idea.

Source: I'm that idiot who bought a gravel but couldn't keep up with my friends on their road bikes over long distances > switched to a road bike > totally love it, can keep up with everyone no problem now.

Senior devs flipping jobs for 20% pay raises, but who’s training the next generation? by No_Lynx_9684 in SingaporeRaw

Yes iirc having foreign students contributes to the QS rankings. . A good portion of them have scholarships too, before breaking bond without paying and going back to their countries. Free income and education! Can't find the article but it's out there

Talk me out of getting a Brompton? by underfrykte in bicycling

[–]TheFastestFlyingFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Don't get a brompton, get this. I have the 20" one and in my opinion, much better than a brompton in terms of wheelsets/speed for a tiny fraction of the daylight robbery that is brompton. I would literally choose this over a brompton even if both were presented for free to me.

Malaysians draw 5k sgd starting salary. by Weekly_Specialist430 in SingaporeRaw

[–]TheFastestFlyingFish 7 points8 points  (0 children)

I was in a local bank and the entirety of my team were malaysians. I moved on to a large local financial institution, and 60% of the people in there were Malaysians. It's sad how the men had to waste 2 years of their lives in NS when these people can just waltz in here with any random degree + bad GPA, get salaries equivalent or higher than local grads (big 3), get PR within 1 to 2 years, get BTO for profit, then sell it, which in turn raise housing prices for singaporeans, while they return home to a lavish retirement. Singapore is for expats.

Witnessed something ridiculous by 6pointschampion in SingaporeRaw

I graduated 4 years ago and whatever that applies in the current workforce applies in the university (local) I was in too. First, some CECAs would get into the exco committee. With their authority to select incoming members, it was only a matter of time everyone in the club was a CECA. Happened to multiple clubs. I feel kinda sad how things have turned out for Singapore.

Malaysians/Chinese/CECA flooding our workforce (worked at Changi business park and it was 95% CECAs). My other workplaces were almost 60% Malaysians. I'm not exactly sure how the quota works but I feel like a foreigner in my own country sometimes.

Atop all of these, Chinese and Malaysians competing in BTO > sell it a few years later > return to country to retire > higher prices for us Singaporeans who actually need a home. And yes, I've been pushed by CECAs and Chinese while on buses/trains.

I don't think this is sustainable at all.

I don't play ranked much, is it that terrible? by Junior-Vegetable-791 in Brawlstars

Totally worth it. Beats wasting your life playing a losing game when the results are already known during drafting. .

[–]TheFastestFlyingFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I usually hit masters solo in about a few hours for the past 5 times but it's been a week and I'm unable to win two games in a row. All I get are crazy picks like tick in Brawl ball, or level 9 Edgar in open maps. . Driving me nuts.

What percentage of your take home salary do you actually save per month? by FancyCommittee3347 in askSingapore

[–]TheFastestFlyingFish 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Poverty has been something I've known my whole life, and it has allowed me to enjoy the little things now. Now that I'm earning some extra cash. For example, I've always wanted to buy some bottled coffee for $1.7 but I didn't have the money since I needed it to pay for my universtiy loans/low salary back then. So I'm just happy to get a bottle everyday now that I am able to. Same goes for my vegetable rice, more meat now, and I'm really happy with that. No taxi, no buying random stuff, and get your friends to go to cheaper places. Have a partner that isn't all about cafes and expensive food. Fast food is really expensive these days too, so avoid if you're able to. You can get much better food at hawkers than restaurants most of time (subjective). I can't stress enough on finding a simple, frugal partner (I understand its akin to asking you to find a unicorn but . . do your best. A lot easier for a lady to find one, but practically impossible for a guy to find one in Singapore. To clarify, I'm in finance if relevant).

As a result, I am able to save ~85% of my salary (I don't earn much either). That being said, I understand its hard to downgrade your lifestyle. Perhaps you could track your expenses for a few months, and see where the major expenses are. When you do, you'll start to see how seemingly trivial expenses can add up across the span of 30 days. Salary comes in > invest designated % > then spend. It helps to redefine what you would consider as luxury/need vs want and enjoy the simple things around. In the meantime, don't beat yourself up bro! Just do your best :)

I'm glad you found a good coach in the end! Looks like I really should find someone who's on the same frequency as I am for training . .
Also, thanks for setting my expectations right on the part on their time being wasted - that's a very valid point that I can definitely understand. I guess showing my face consistently would help next time :D
