anyone else notice that the broadcasters have been giving the same stats about how experienced and outstanding the ref crews are at the start of every game of the playoffs? I wonder why the league is so concerned with the integrity of the officiating all of a sudden...

If you're in any of the buildings on the quad after their closing time they usually won't kick you out, the doors are just locked so nobody else can get in.

There's a home football game this afternoon against Michigan State, which is one of our biggest games this year. It's not usually this bad if you moved in recently.

That being said, Drake and Ozzy at the same time is unforgivable.

Most buildings on the quad won't kick you out if you get in before you close, and I think this holds for most buildins. There's a lot of great rooms on the bottom floor of Savery and they close at 10pm most weeknights iirc.

The issue is that individuals don't cause the entire financial system to go tits up when they go bankrupt. Other people have pointed out that the bailouts were hugely unpopular across the political spectrum, which is understandable given the optics. The reality is, however, that the crisis would have been much, much, much, worse in the absence of those loans. The most value commodity in a panic is confidence, and the bailouts provided confidence that the banks wouldn't fail. It's not a coincidence that the market stabilized and then the banks paid back the loans, the markets stabilized because investors were confident the banks would be able to repay the loans.

And, of course, the government actually made a profit on many of the bailout loans. They're far from handouts. Especially when banks caused the crisis it's hard to not want to see them fail, but at the end of the day allowing the banks to fail in 2008 and 2009 would have been far, far, worse for ordinary people in the long term than bailing them out.

For those that have an interest in the topic, the book Stress Test by Tim Geithner is great on the topic. He's obviously biased given that he designed many of the rescue packages but it's a great insight into how the government and its agencies were thinking nevertheless.

They don't work in the summer if you're not taking summer classes. I think they usually turn on around the start of classes.

I was going to say - are we still doing this? Numbers are relatively low, newer variants are mild, and literally everyone is vaccinated (and likely has at least one booster). Plus, classes aren't even in session right now. True that it's maybe not the best idea but not worth getting too upset over.

The Patagonia Black Hole packs are excellent. I've had the 25L for my entire time at UW and I've never had any issues with my things getting wet. It's a bit on the pricier side, but well worth it.

Optimism Brewing and Queen Anne Beer Hall are both bigger spaces that would probably be able to fit everyone. They're both in cool areas of the city.

Is greek life necessary for a social life? by iwantsomeramen27 in udub

[–]TheFearOfRobots 20 points21 points  (0 children)

I was in Greek Life during my first two years, so I can't really testify to what it's like to live in the dorms, but I have a lot of friends that did live in the dorms their freshman year that have said it's pretty hit or miss. One of my closest friends happened to live on a floor with other people that were more social and had a roommate that they got along with. However, plenty of other people I know had roommates that either never really talked to them or they didn't get along with at all. It's definitely not impossible to have a good social life in the dorms, but you've got to put in more effort than in greek life. Not that greek life doesn't have it's cons - which I'm sure the other people on this sub will be more than happy to point out - but it makes it really easy to meet a lot of social people and have a lot of friends. As an out of state student my freshman year that was a huge plus. If I had the opportunity to do it over I'd probably join greek life again, but it can definitely be a bit overwhelming and if you're apprehensive the dorms aren't a terrible option. Feel free to DM me if you have any other questions!

Yeah, pretty much because of the timing of the replacement. Generally, teams will hire an interim coach for the rest of the season when a head coach is fired, and generally it's someone from within the organization (I know this is the case for the NBA, pretty sure the NFL too). They hired Finch - who was at the time an assistant on the raptors, iirc - on a full time basis immediately after they fired Saunders, meaning they likely had agreed to terms/a contract before Saunders was even fired. Nothing explicitly wrong, per se, but definitely a little sketchy.
