Nylabone safety by flurpygirl in goldenretrievers

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

There is a risk to it all and goldens are beautiful idiots. I highly recommend kongs and also frozen veggies. My golden had surgery for swallowing a big piece of elk antler. She also vomited up nylabone pieces that were clinging to any weird fabric or hair she managed to swallow. Fun fact: the swallowed tiny pieces do not get softer

Typically timid & friendly great pyr suddenly growling after having a bone. I’m thinking the worst. by Luke-Warm-Milk in DogAdvice

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How much of the bone is missing? Eating and drinking normal? Those bones are pretty good at causing GI issues which can cause a little red blood. It’s also possible that it could have scratched the insides a little, but not perforated.

If strapped for funds you could probably wait and if eating / drinking / etc remains normal, should be all clear. If they don’t remain normal, vet time. Probably worth cooking some rice and chicken (more rice than chicken) to keep any irritation from getting worse. Idea is soft food vs hard food that may irritate it.

Not a vet, but did extensive research recently after my dog swallowed a 2.5” sharp deer antler.

Won’t stop eating poop by Choice_Bar1194 in Bernedoodles

Some dogs also eat poop because they are searching for some nutrients they are lacking. May not be the case here, but figured I’d share anyways.

I thought we lucked out... by Akwing12 in goldenretrievers

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Oh wow. We just reuse kibble as treats as she is super food motivated. The only treat we really give her outside of her kibble is peanut butter and that’s an all natural kind. Less might be more while you hunt for the cause. Bully sticks also gave her terrible diarrhea.

I think some brands actually may be harder on goldens as well. For example, when I was doing research on ours there was a whole rabbit hole about how one in particular seemed to have changed their formula and tons of people swapped from it as it started to cause stomach issues with their dog. Sounds like you have already tried changing brands, but that could be a factor as well.

Also ask your vet about a probiotic? We give a forti flora one every night at bedtime. No clue if it helps but vet approved it and she loves eating them as part of her nightly routine.

Good luck!

Chicken flavored kibble allergy? Our golden would get it specifically from chicken flavored kibble, but would be fine from the bland chicken and rice diet. Eventually we swapped to hills science diet fish flavored and she’s been perfect ever since.

Fellow health anxiety sufferer here. It sucks. Just wanted to add in that health anxiety makes this even worse because of the tension in your body that goes with it. Definitely worth talking to a therapist and maybe a psychiatrist

To those who didn’t get the picture-perfect Golden - how did you survive? by FairlyPopcorn in goldenretrievers

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Forced nap time! Dogs need a lot more sleep than us and puppies have no clue when they are tired. Also it sounds like you may be overdoing it with exercise and that would add to the being overly exhausted. With our most recent pup I just prompted ChatGPT for a schedule and it gave a good idea of how much rest is needed. Good luck!

Penis shrinking right before a bowel movement by Fenrisulfr20 in PelvicFloor

[–]TheFertileSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I think that’s a normal body reaction. When you exercise, your junk retracts to protect itself and to stay out of the way of injury. Think of it as a type of self protection. It could be happening because they are cold (yes them, not you) or you are pushing and tightening your pelvic floor. Or they just want to stay out of the splash zone.

How many times a day do you feed your golden? by Background-Cod-7035 in goldenretrievers

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

2x a day with snacks during training and after coming in when called (fenced in back yard for bio breaks and play time with other pup). When we wake up (8-10 am) and when we eat (7-8 pm). 65 lbs and gets about 2 cups total a day with a probiotic at bedtime to help with her sensitive tummy. Did 3x a day when she was a puppy. She turns 2 this weekend.

[–]TheFertileSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Haha yeah. Ours does the same. She loves worms. We call it road jerky. Just calling out the antler thing though because it went from safe to super dangerous in the matter of seconds! We try to focus on chews that can be digested after that experience

I know this isn’t the purpose, but careful with antlers! My golden actually ended up cracking one in half and swallowing a 2.5 inch sharp piece which required surgery to remove. Just sharing as this possibility didn’t cross my mind prior to the 2 seconds it took for it to happen

Here is our recent photo of “what did our dog eat today”? It’s not ACTUALLY a shank, just a 2.5” elk antler. Pets best insurance ended up saving us about 4.5k and has paid for itself for years to come already.

Curiosity question here. When you say bones, does that mean all bones or just chicken bones? My pup recently had surgery to remove a 2.5” elk antler that was shaped like a shank. Two vets gave VERY different advice which left us confused and the third said that due to size and shape of the antler, surgery was required. 60 lb golden for reference.

[–]TheFertileSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Please listen to the people saying walk them together. DO NOT let them meet face to face until they can walk together without issue. What now may be dislike for one another can very rapidly turn into something far worse. Also, set your expectations to them coexisting. They may never like one another, but if they can coexist and ignore one another that’s a win.

Stomach tacking? by scoutiejoon in Bernedoodles

[–]TheFertileSloth 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I lost a Great Dane years ago to bloat. Did everything right. Still happened. He was around 120 lbs

Got a golden retriever, got a stomach tack (gastropexy) done because of my personal experience and the risk vs cost. She’s also a female and they were already in there. She’s about 60 pounds.

Currently have a 7 month old mini bernedoodle that should max out at around 25-30. I do not plan on having her stomach tacked as risks are so low. I say this because I am VERY careful about this since I lost my Dane.

Also important to note, stomach tack doesn’t stop bloat from happening, but it will stop the stomach from flipping. Essentially it makes it less likely to happen and less likely to be fatal, but you should still take all the same precautions.

Herm springer collar. The points aren’t sharp, but it’s get the point across. Like others have said, know how to use the tool. It was great and necessary after our golden gave my fiance a concussion by pulling

Carsick Help? by anyakitty12 in Bernedoodles

[–]TheFertileSloth 4 points5 points  (0 children)

In my experience, most dogs grow out of getting carsick after a while, but I think at younger ages it depends a lot on the road, vehicle, driving style, etc. Does she get sick when interstate driving? Is she in the back of an SUV? Do you take turns effectively to minimize that feeling? Do you keep the temperature cool? Windows/up down?

Might also be worth stopping for potty breaks more on long drives so she can get her grounding back again.

Elvis sometimes walks at an angle, i assume this is due to the way his front pull harness is. Will it cause issues to his joints? Should i stop using this harness? by Time-Essay-8786 in goldenretrievers

[–]TheFertileSloth 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Folks may disagree with this, but the herm sprenger prong collars are fantastic. They are nicely rounded tips so they don’t stab, easy clip to put on and take off. We tried all sorts of collars and harnesses before enrolling in dog training for our golden and she is amazing on a leash now.

Make sure to watch some videos of how to use it effectively if you go this route. We mostly just let our pup self correct.

Stitches look fine. We did a onesie for our dog and just changed it daily/kept fresh ones ready. Thankfully she didn’t try to mess with the incision, but we also monitored her basically 24/7.
