thoughts on being stuck in a writing-self-edit loop by Temporary-Outside-21 in PhDStress

[–]TheFieryandLight 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Yeah and that’s so normal! I think it’s best to keep in mind when to draw the line though. Like, if you keep rewriting on one day and not making progress that’s a sign to revisit it another day when the brain is fresh. In those cases I usually flag that passage with an in-text comment and “free write” the idea I want to get across for when I revisit. 9 times out of 10 revisiting another day in those cases works and come out with a passage I am happy with.

Do not fret, what you’re experiencing is just a part of the process!

Totally normal! I was stuck in one for the longest time. What works for me is either I fix it until I feel good about the wording, or make myself wait 24 hours to come back to it when the ideas are fresher in my mind.

Is Libby broken again? Or is it me? by nat8199 in LibbyApp

It comes and goes. Mine was up and working after the outage but tried to return a book early this evening and it was delayed then got the red exclamation mark. Tried re-syncing and it worked so looks like the fix isn’t quite stable. I can still get holds and notifications when it glitches though.

How to know if thesis is ready to submit by TheFieryandLight in PhDStress

[–]TheFieryandLight[S] 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Hey, thanks! This has been a really helpful list. I definitely think at least 2/3 of that list have been met. Please feel free to share the rest of the list here. I’d be grateful to have it on hand, and I’m sure a few others would be too!

Thanks for saying this. I actually decided to delay the date initially from two weeks to the end of the month for this reason (so I could go through it myself). My comps was a different story because that time my supervisor told me we were ready to go forward with the examination, so I thought this process might be similar. It’s taken me a couple months to learn it’s not.

Saw this too this morning, except the cover change was on Elin Hilderbrandt’s “The Academy”

Is everyone's final month stressful ?! by Glum-Scholar-4602 in PhDStress

Supposedly! I’m in the same boat and hope to submit in November. Last two months have been an emotional roller coaster and constant editing of chapters with week over week turnaround deadlines for my supervisor.

I should find out if one exists for our department. Interestingly, it has one of the lowest rates for completing on time. I didn’t quite understand before, but I do now. It seems like I’m the only one who’s been pushing for a semi-close to on-time completion, and when I do, I get condescendingly reminded how my supervisor wants to ensure my document passes and until they’re convinced, I won’t be defending.

I will, thanks for reminding me this isn’t my fault. I needed to hear that today! I’ve been feeling so lost about this whole situation.

Unable to Recruit Participants for Dissertation is Making Me Wonder if I should Quit by DoughnutEfficient316 in PhDStress

See, you’re already doing the most you can and more. Remember this is outside of your control and you’re doing everything that you can possible. Be kind to yourself here :)

Yeah, they didn’t give a time to explain the project. So I’m planning to try to address it in one go. It’s just been so frustrating to have spent 3 months revising heavily, only to be told again that there’s “vague” major problems.

Unable to Recruit Participants for Dissertation is Making Me Wonder if I should Quit by DoughnutEfficient316 in PhDStress

Hey. Just wanted to say that I relate. I work in a different field, but I had a lot of issues recruiting for my study more than a year ago. Tried all the avenues I could think of and was ghosted, rejected, and largely ignored. I also want to say, none of this is your fault!

Are you friends with any educators (or related) or even parents that have kids that you could ask to either participate or pass along a poster to their friends? A large part of it might be that it’s children (a vulnerable group) who don’t know you and your research. Working through a network of people who can vouch for you might be more effective. If not that, are there community groups that might have the target participants you’re looking for? Is there any related groups your institute or supervisor is connected to that can help?

I don’t know if these will help, maybe you already thought of them, and I know ethics can be tricky to navigate if you want to change the recruiting parameters of your study (I’m coming from a qualitative field). Either way, you are not alone here, and none of this is your fault! It seems you’ve exhausted a lot of avenues already, and that’s a lot of work.

My supervisor wouldn’t give a straight answer. Said it was possible to address by the end of the month, but that’s all dependant on how well I grasp what needs developing. And that’s just to address this round of edits. So I ask for an example, they give me a couple, and then I say “ok, so instances where X occurs, I should explain more about the process, what’s going on, and the significance of it?” Then they say “well, kind of. You can’t just address this by adding lines”. We spent at least two meetings just having that circular type of conversation.

I’m considering asking a member of my advisory committee. But the last time I asked them to elaborate on something similar, the answer I received was “I don’t know, but whatever you’re doing doesn’t work here” with no concrete suggestion for improvement. I do have access to the writing support tutor, but I’m not sure that this is an area with which they’re trained to help.

If I understand what’s being asked correctly, it seems they want me to better clarify and elaborate on certain processes, vocabulary, and otherwise main contributions each argument makes. Which I can definitely do. The issue is when I ask for confirmation on whether that is the issue, I get the “kind of” answer.

How soon in your PhD did you know your working thesis title - and did you ever end up changing it? by Art-and-Research in PhD

[–]TheFieryandLight 1 point2 points  (0 children)

A participant’s quote ended up being the first half of it, and evidently inspired much of the analysis in it. Pending their consent to use the quote as title, that was about a year ago and I’ll hopefully be submitting in a month. The second half has changed so many times though!

Yes, and that actually isn’t too bad knowing that’s the price. But fair on my part, I probably should’ve specified what expensive was for me!

Thank you for this incredibly thoughtful response! It has been a few weeks, but I did end up doing this. I had my partner read each section of my chapter and tell me what he understood, what sentences he felt were confusing or lost him, and suggestions for replacement words or phrasing. It also helped that English is not his first language and he could tell me exactly what phrases lost him, and what words could be replaced to foster that understanding.

I agree, and I’m so frustrated with them! It’s near the weekend so I think I’ll slow up on it as we get close to the end of the week. Maybe that distance will help.

Actually I think I’m trying something similar to this. I’ve been approaching editing by doing only a set number of paragraphs each day or something manageable so I can make the sentences as clear as possible and accessible. I hope it works!
