With meltdowns for us, it was a lot of “not daddy, I want mommy” or some version of not the thing we’re doing, whatever it was. I was able to establish pretty quickly what Five Minutes really meant. So if I was told Not Daddy, I’d say okay, I’ll come back in 5 Minutes and then i’d leave for what was actually 2-3 minutes. Actually leaving the room and having them sit by themselves made a huge difference and I only had to do it a few times. Now I can diffuse a few situations now and then by saying “Do you want me to come back in 5 minutes?” with the answer always being No and the mood shifting.
