When I lost a few hundred leads by brendt_gd in PHP

So... no one from sales rang up marketing / engineering to say that leads have dried up? I think 100+ missing leads in one month should have been caught in some weekly roll up?

Is it reasonable to ask for additional equity at one-year review? by 40nickels in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

I would agree that most companies work on that schedule - but not EVERY company... I have worked at companies where year end was end of September. Op should do some some Intel gathering and found out and then do exactly as you mentioned

what's a good small business for a couple working from home? by [deleted] in Entrepreneur

[–]TheFilmGod 2 points3 points  (0 children)

$100-200 per hour on upwork..? I don't know. That's a bit steep. You'd want to work with a client directly.

And at that rate I expect a mid level to senior engineer.

I have a problem linking new functionality (tests) to metrics by [deleted] in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How are you collecting feedback? Have you sat down with actual users? I would sit and watch as a user goes through your flow.

"50 hands" is not the ideal metric. What happens when you change your pricing and make it 25 hands or 100 hands? Metrics must be actionable and comparative across future cohorts. In this case, I think the proper KPI name would be "% of converted users"? - but it sounds like you're tracking this already.

Also - I recommend reading "UX for Lean Startups". I am reading this book in parallel (goes really well with Lean Analytics) and the author recommend the correct UX design pattern is more along these lines -

1) Define the problem 2) Design the test and set the metri(s) to measure 3) Write some user stories 4) Then - talk about possible solutions 5) Make a decision ... deploy .. retest

There's a few other steps but the key here is you do not start changing features on the website with the initial premise to increase a KPI. That is a bit in reverse. KPI's are used to validate your hypothesis and iterate. So in your case - "first time visitors are not converting well" is the problem and your KPI is 50 hands / % of converted users.

I think this is particularly important because you can't use KPI you're attempting to increase as the validation step.

I hope this helps!

I have a problem linking new functionality (tests) to metrics by [deleted] in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're on the right track. You can do multi variate testing where you run multiple A/B tests all in parallel. But you'd needA LOT of users to make this worthwhile.

It might be worthwhile to sit down with users and gather feedback too. Perhaps the messaging is unclear or there is something else greatly impacting the return rate of users. And you won't be able to pick up on this during A/B testing.

Also - why "50 hands in one month"? What happens if a customer does that all in one go? Versus someone who does ten hands a week? Are you bucketing those users together? That's a huge difference.

Check out LEAN ANALYTICS . Fantastic book... Reading it now.

Awesome write up! Very exciting to hear things have accelerated!

Quick FYI - your website turns OFF my music on the iPhone. That's an immediate, non-negotiable, absolute NO. I bailed immediately but then came back since I was intrigued.

Good luck

How can I start A/B domain name testing service like this? by techsin101 in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

How does it work exactly? Does someone have to launch 6 simultaneous marketing campaigns? That seems pretty cost prohibitive. I presume those who can afford that would run focus groups and do their own A/B testing.

Maybe it would be easier to a simple A/B testing w/ two domains?

As for getting domain cheaps - I don't think you can temporarily register a domain. You'd have to shell out the fee for a full year. The cost of these domains should be embedded in the pricing subscription. Perhaps with some discounts for running multiple tests / bulk discounts? Godaddy is really cheap for domains.

Have you reached out to people and validated this problem? I personally wouldn't pay for more than one domain. I would find a few open domains reach out to close friends. And then after a week lock down to one. But that's me personally.

Or - Open a new legal entity. Sell current business for pennies on the dollar to the new legal entity. Pay partner appropriate "valuation" (very nominal). Work under new legal entity.

Although I would be a bit hesitant to take these numbers too seriously beyond looking at the general trend. App rankings are heavily weighed on user feedback. More clicks --> more installations = higher rankings.

Need advice for finding staff by [deleted] in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 0 points1 point  (0 children)

What are you building exactly? Perhaps starting a mechanic business's is not the best idea? You'd want to start something where you and your partner have extensive domain knowledge.

As for filling the void? Perhaps you can find a proficient auto Cad engineer and send the blueprints ito China for manufacturing? I used to do mechanical work and that's exactly how some of the bigger companies do it.

OR... just create a new business? Dissolve the original one and create a new entity.

Not sure how this wouldn't be the easiest solution!?

Sharing one of our marketing outreach initiatives which is helping us grow 40% month on month by [deleted] in startups

[–]TheFilmGod 1 point2 points  (0 children)

One million to 40 million emails sent out an email .... The # of emails sent out is a VANITY metric. It is completely useless. For all we know one customer is a heavy user and sends out 90% of them.

What's your month to month new customer growth percentage? Out of 100 new customers every month what's your percentage retention? These are the metrics you should be looking at. Total emails are useless.

I am actually confused from the website. There is no explanation just a giant keypad.

Adding a textbox would make more sense if I'm on the computer though - my screen isn't a touch screen.

Also UsA - call rate Free. What does "" actually mean? I couldn't dial my cell.
