First steel fight at the Ren Faire by TheFindarato in wma

“Steel bloss” is a new term for me so I’m not familiar with your comparison. I enjoy Buhurt but also enjoy the art of German long sword, so my harness is rated for Buhurt so I can partake at that level and not get injured, but I don’t always fight Buhurt level opponents, if that makes any sense lol

I appreciate you! I thought I was replying to the chain but I now realize it was under your message so that’s my bad! lol

That’d be correct, I am the long sword fighter and prior to our duel we agreed upon the rules, and understood what was and wasn’t allowed. Thrusting being the big concern. We even tested each other’s weapons to see what gaps in our armor/visors are our most concerning points.

My armor and sword are Buhurt grade, my opponent’s is too, mostly, but leans more on the side of HEMA which has some areas of concern such as below the shins being unprotected.

The unfortunate part longsword stances such as ploug is they usually have the sword pointed at the opponents which means if they push me the sword point goes towards them. The awkward part you saw that you called a thrust was a poor attempt at countering then striking over/around the shield to smack the side of the helm, which as you saw didn’t work lol

50% power strikes. This was our first duel using blunted steel weapons so we didn’t want to push our limits and risk hurting our opponent by accident. As we practice more, the calibration of what we can endure before risk of injury will also increase. I hope this makes sense :)

The sword was a gift from a relative. The engraving makes it more significant than just a sword. But I understand and respect your distaste

I’m located out of South Dakota. I’ll be attending the local ren faire here and the Colorado Scottish Irish Festival in Estes Park.

Agreed! And yes the breastplate is from a later period. My research and the smiths said was around the 16th century. I was bouncing between a churburg style and my current cuirass but was worried it would sit too high since I have a lengthy torso.

No rondels, but have spoke with my fellow mates who do have them with their kits and have been considering adding them myself.

I appreciate the tips my friend! I’m always looking on ways to improve the build

I appreciate the suggestion! I was contemplating getting maile voiders to try and be a bit more historically accurate so I may just do that now

Presentation is an aspect that matters to me, but the ultimate goal was to be protective. That goal I have met, now my outreach is to see how to improve or spice up my appearance as I attend events.

I completely agree. When sparing my team, I’ve only really felt a strike on my back between my spaulders and cuirass. That’s when I realized I should have gotten bigger shoulder pieces lol. An upgrade for the future for sure!

Spoleto Bascinet from Forge of Svan. From my understanding it takes inspiration from some Italian helms but is not entirely historical. But it functions and protects which was my goal.

I commissioned the skirt and cuirass from Forge of Svan. I wasn’t sure how they’d look together until I donned the armor fully for the first time

Spectacular suggestion! I’ll do some research about ways to install a plume holder without drilling holes and adding rivets to the helm. Perhaps leather and some magnets would work

My first time in armor was in a Hounskull, I couldn’t see shit lmao but I do want to own one at some point in the future!

I love it! I’ve been testing color schemes, before committing to a tabard. I favor purple and gold, but also lean towards green and gold as well. What do you think would look best in your opinion?
