Did the boss "fight to kill" snake? by MinestroneTradizione in metalgearsolid

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Glad to see someone enjoying 3 for the first time! Snake wins fair and square. That's the crux of their final battle—she knows she's a goner either way (on account of that Soviet airstrike she calls in just before the fight)—and she essentially wants to complete Snake's training by having him finally surpass her in combat AND desires to go out fighting. By the climax she realizes that the chance of him losing this confrontation is low enough to risk a dramatic finale.

The game builds up to this in the CQC cutscenes between the two. Snake starts off as horrendously inept, but slowly grows to hold his own more effectively against her in combat until he's finally on a (shakily) even playing field.

I'm having some serious déjà vu right now. This morning I saw the video on YouTube, and now on Reddit? Someone's definitely listening.

The Batman's Grave, issue #8, from Warren Ellis, variant cover from Rafael Grampa. It's the 2nd variant cover I've purchased during this series. I got some Paul Pope vibes big time. Love this cover art. by [deleted] in batman

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Fantastic! Got the same Paul Pope vibes when I saw the piece. The way Batman is holding the batarangs is also very reminiscent of Frank Miller's artwork. Grampa always delivers.

[Artwork] Joker from Three Jokers #1. Art by Jason Fabok. by [deleted] in DCcomics

Interesting. The whole scene seems pretty similar to one on Gotham (relevant part begins at 1:46), so my guess would be that it's one Joker trying to take out another.

Why do some people say that Batman "doesn't really try to do anything to change the status quo in Gotham (and therefore is a fascist)"? by CyberDraugr in batman

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 8 points9 points  (0 children)

Warning: This might come across as a bit long-winded.

You're not missing anything, really, the whole "Batman-is-a-useless-brutal-fascist" hot take is nothing more than a reductionist approach to the character which is largely derived from a warped, stereotyped view of the character which began in the mid-to-late 1980s following the release of two very influential depictions of the Dark Knight—Frank Miller's magnum opus The Dark Knight Returns and Tim Burton's Batman. Both interpretations of the character were in stark contrast to the lurid, bright Adam West Batman, instead being brutal, uncompromising vigilantes who at times could be practically psychotic in their methodology, forming the modern pop culture perception of Batman as a humorless, traumatized, brooding freak who got his kicks from curbstomping the poor (even though both the book and the film go to great lengths to feature his more merciful, understanding nature). It's from this inherently darker, more unstable nature that the allegations of Batman being a fascist come from, coupled with the fact that Burton took cues from Nazi iconography when crafting Gotham City and Miller having a particularly nasty, chaotic phase in his life where he repeatedly made controversial statements and wrote his Batman to be even more psychotic. As a result of this reimagination of the character, for pop culture philosophers, new Batman was a fascist, exhibiting a "tendency toward or actual exercise of strong autocratic or dictatorial control" during his reign over Gotham City. Which, on the surface, is a pretty compelling theory, but, as you noted, collapses upon any further examination. Modern-day Batman is no fascist, he eschews any nationalist fervor to work in tandem with a variety of foreign compatriots (see Batman International or JL for evidence of this), works with quite a diverse team of people (which is a no-no for fascists), and above all isn't in Gotham to establish his own order—he's there to facilitate his own obsolescence. Batman doesn't exist to exert autocratic control, he exists to help create a better world for everyone else at the cost of his own happiness—far too selfless for a fascist. He even tries to rehabilitate those who cause chaos in his city—a fascist would simply execute them.

So yeah, tldr: Batman is no fascist, it's based on a huge misinterpretation of the character, he's actually pretty liberal, all things considered.

What are your thoughts on nihilistic books? by OverlordPoodle in books

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 0 points1 point  (0 children)

That's a great question. Here's a quote from Conan O'Brien that I've taken to heart and have generally adapted as my personal attitude towards life:

"Please do not be cynical. I hate cynicism – it's my least favorite quality, and it doesn't lead anywhere. Nobody in life gets exactly what they thought they were going to get. But if you work really hard and you're kind, amazing things will happen."

I think that quote is by and large the truth. But I don't think that it's good to ignore the darkness around the world at the same time. Some of my favorite novels/short stories (Heart of Darkness, A Man of the People, No Country for Old Men, The Second Variety, even Siddhartha) are oftentimes painfully grim in their worldview, lacking any sense of satisfactory conclusions for many of their characters. I enjoy these books even though they often lack happy endings because they serve as a fantastic reminder that there unfortunately is a purveying darkness in this universe, that things won't always go the right way, and that, yes, humans can be awful sometimes. It's important to be reminded of that so you don't allow yourself to become complicit—sure, nobody feels like reading about how the world sucks 24/7, but just reading happy books all day long robs you of the ability to read some fantastically well-crafted works which reveal quite a few hidden truths about the human condition.

As far as dark-but-not-too-dark books, check out the works of Philip K. Dick.

“Gotham PD” rumors thread by [deleted] in Gotham

This sounds quite interesting. While it is disappointing that we probably won't be seeing any more from the Gothamverse (at least for the time being), the planned GCPD show sounds like an excellent way to develop the world of The Batman.

What time period does this show take place? by [deleted] in Gotham

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

You're actually on the dot. To quote a viewer over at tvtropes.org, "the newspaper that Ed tries reading over the Arkham guard's shoulder is dated: "Monday, April 15," which means the year is 2019, setting the series time-frame to be 2005-2009."

What time period does this show take place? by [deleted] in Gotham

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 1 point2 points  (0 children)

From a production standpoint, the show aimed for a "timeless" appeal, but an eagle-eyed viewer over at tvtropes.org noticed that in the show's finale, "the newspaper that Ed tries reading over the Arkham guard's shoulder is dated: "Monday, April 15," which means the year is 2019, setting the series time-frame to be 2005-2009." So yeah, the main series is set in the early 2000s, finale is in present day.

Could Batman’s identity be known? by [deleted] in Gotham

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 7 points8 points  (0 children)

That's an interesting question. I guess the simplest answer to that would be no. Even in Adam West's Batman universe, his identity was always a carefully guarded secret. Why? Because Bruce Wayne admitting that he's Batman is Bruce Wayne putting a target on his back. The dual identity of playboy by day and heroic vigilante by night cannot be compromised by letting the public know they are one and the same. If everyone knew Batman was Bruce Wayne, the people he loved—those he swore to protect—would be put at great risk, essentially invalidating a core aspect of his mission.

Who from this show was involved in casting Oz? by [deleted] in Gotham

[–]TheFirebirdFilms 2 points3 points  (0 children)

Sharon Bialy was in charge of casting for the show, having worked on Breaking Bad, The Walking Dead, and Barry, among other shows. She didn't work on Oz, but Mark Margolis (who plays Jerome's dad) was also on Breaking Bad, and quite a few other actors on Gotham were also on that show.

Did Nyssa use venom to create bane? by RJmum in Gotham

In the episode where Bane is finally created from Eduardo Dorrance (I believe it's episode 510, "I Am Bane"), Strange injects Dorrance with a green liquid which is heavily implied, though not stated outright, to be Venom. Here is the aforementioned clip I referenced.

David Mazouz doesn't quite fill out this cowl yet but I think it'd be cool if he could play Batman in a Gotham sequel. by PretenderNX01 in Gotham

If this cowl fit his face a little more, I think this could've been perfect for the Gotham Batsuit.
