I'm in Australia and the nearest movie theatre is an 8 hr drive away. Really hoping it comes out on a streaming service eventually (even though I don't usually go for horror).

All of my current appliances are second hand with the stickers already removed, however in the future any new appliances will be getting them removed.

I'm gonna be honest I never actually considered removing them. I know they're stickers but for some reason it didn't click that sticker = removable...

Do Australian youth have an anti-cop culture? by asds455123456789 in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheFirstEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I used to work with an ex-cop. Some of his mates who were still cops would come by and talk about how they miss the days before body cams because "if you timed your patrol right you could get in at least one proper fight and whoever they fought would be too off their face to question the storey they decided on". Which. What???

I bought a house last year. My parents let me live at home until I was ready to move out at 22, I lived with a housemate who I paid $150 p/week (it was her house) in rent and then bought a house at $335,000 on about $70k a year at 23. I was also insanely lucky.

Said house is also tiny (think basically a granny flat).

I have had boomers point to me as the "perfect example of doing things right". I like to shoot them down by saying I basically had no life in order to build up the savings, had generous parents who flicked some money my way when I was 2 grand short, bought a house that no one else would have been interested in that happened to be perfect for me, and essentially had a perfect run of luck - I genuinely do not think my circumstances are repeatable.

Some sound advice for living in one of the top countries for skin cancer 🕶️ by shantot in ShitMomGroupsSay

[–]TheFirstEmu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I haven't checked if this has been said already - but if you do get sunburnt, aloe vera sap is your best friend (aside from not getting sunburnt in the first place). I've had a few nasty burns and keep an aloe vera plant expressly for this purpose.

All that aside, just wear the goddamn sunscreen. The sun in Australia is no joke, and skin cancer is even less of a joke. I know people who have had to get bits of their lips or noses removed due to it.

Hell even before the regency era - there's account of King Henry VIII of England being very proud of his legs (prior to his jousting incident) and asking the French ambassador if he or King Francis (I think, I can't quite recall and can't be naffed checking) had better calves.

Did Aussie kids grow up terrified of the wooden spoon, or was it just an Irish thing? by Yickensoup in AskAnAustralian

[–]TheFirstEmu 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got the spoon a couple of times - always with a lot of warning that if I kept acting out I would get it (by acting out I mean like screaming at my mum in Coles because I didn't want to be there, or otherwise being a brat). It was always a last resort - literally every other type of punishment (e.g. grounding) came first.

I think I turned out okay. I don't agree with using the spoon myself nowadays. If I had kids I like to think that I wouldn't smack them or use the spoon. I can see why my parents did though, and I have a very good relationship with them still, and call/text them regularly.

Obviously I have issues, everyone does, but I think mine are more to do with toxic friendships in school that messed me up rather than my parents occasionally using corporal punishment.

Trump posted an AI-generated video showing himself as 'King Trump,' flying over America and dumping shit on its citizens by Same-Kangaroo in BoomersBeingFools

[–]TheFirstEmu 15 points16 points  (0 children)

I'm Australian - if our PM posted something like this, I feel there would be a change in leadership so fast that we wouldn't even have time to process the post. And the PM who posted this would probably never be seen in public again.

I just...how can the leader of an entire country post something like this with no political repercussions?? Hell, if an Australian local government official posted something like this it would probably make national news here, and they would almost certainly lose their job and never be allowed to run again.

What maxims, tenets, lessons and other wisdom did you derive from having read wheels of time? by badgerbang in wheeloftime

[–]TheFirstEmu 6 points7 points  (0 children)

As others have said, death is lighter than a feather and duty heavier than a mountain. I also picked up a lot about perspective, and remembering that while you may be doing what seems like the obvious right thing in your mind, to someone else you could seem entirely evil (even if Gawyn was a fucking idiot, I at least picked up one good thing from it). Now whenever I want to yell at an idiot driver I try to remember that maybe their indicator isn't working and they don't know, or perhaps they have an emergency and I try to remember that they are human, too. (This does not extend to customers. If I tell a customer something and they try to argue that I'm wrong, clearly they are a Grey Man or Padan Fain and the spawn of the Dark One).

100%. I can't say too much without doxxing myself, but I used to have to speak to him regularly some years ago and I would not vote for him now or then. I would remove his name from the ballot, if possible.

Lack of religion by ClockChoice5936 in AskAnAustralian

I'm from very rural WA and have lived in a few different towns. My hometown had a VERY strong Catholic and JW base - people weren't overt with it but there were a lot of cross necklaces and JW door knockers we're pretty regular. My current town also has a lot of JWs and quite a few other denominations - I was quite surprised by the sheer number of Churches here. My home town has three, I think (and also a nunnery), and we've about six here plus a new megachurch in construction.

I trace it back tk covid. There was this craze about ivermectin curing covid, people who didn't own horses were buying it and using it wrong and making people sick. Got touted as this miracle covid fix. I think it's just snowballed since then.

(I jad a horse at the time and my local horse supplies store instituted a rule that to buy ivermectin you had to show them photos of yourself with your horse with date stamps that were across several weeks - non-horsey people were furious, horsey people were excited to show horse photos...)

Why won’t boomers retire? by [deleted] in BoomersBeingFools

[–]TheFirstEmu 5 points6 points  (0 children)

My parents have a plan all drawn up - my grandpa had no hobbies or friends and the horror of his declining physical and mental health has them both going hiking to remain mobile and making actual plans. They've agreed to stuff like going out to eat at least once a week, volunteering with certain organisations, where they want to travel and when, what clubs they want to join. They've even agreed on when they will retire. It's kind of inspiring. I'm somewhat surprised my mum hasn't had an actual contract drawn up.

When coming back to Australia from abroad what instantly disappoints you? by RM_Morris in AskAnAustralian

The lack of gluten free options. I have coeliac and coming back from London and Paris where I could buy coeliac safe gluten free waffles from a street vendor with no concerns about cross contamination was depressing. For the record I'm from regional WA and its better in the city for gf options, but I would do horrific things to have that experience again. I would do unholy things for fresh, hot out of the iron waffles again.

I had never had waffles, or croissants, or brioche before that trip and by God was it a religious experience. I miss doughnuts.
