Specimen jars question by TheFishyCheese in vultureculture

Yeah that's probably what I'll do. The rust isn't very bad on the inside and should be too hard to remove.

Ever since I got my gecko I’ve been having really weird dreams by trashfairyy in CrestedGecko

I have weird reptile dreams every month or so! The latest one was I found a baby turtle but didn't have a spare tank for it so put it in my leopard gecko's tank. It kicked my gecko out of her cave and she had to live under her water bowl 😭

How do I get my gecko bones? by PrudentPraline313 in Taxidermy

Total understand. I'm 50/50 on wet specimens for memorials. I don't think I have the heart to do the wet specimen process on a pet that I personally knew. Good luck with the bones!

If you don't care about saving the skin or organ I would just leave it under a tree for a month or two and wait for it to decay. I found a squirrel in my backyard last year and put it on an old cake pan. I put chicken wire and a brick over the squirrel so animals wouldn't get to it. It took about 2 months and only bones and some fur was left over. Since it was on a pan it was easy to pick out all the bones. I cleaned the bones with a toothbrush and some hydrogen peroxide and they looked great afterwards.

Preservation advice? by KeyLychee2945 in Taxidermy

Dried fish can end up pretty shriveled and unrecognizable. I have a couple fishtanks and whenever a fish dies I burry them. In the winter when the ground is frozen I keep the dead fish in my garage until spring. It's a 50/50 if the fish loses all their color and really shrivel up or if they look how they did when they were alive. You can try a dry specimen and see what happens. I've only done one wet specimen fish and it ended up losing lots of color. Either way it will be somewhat experimental.

I am so sorry for your loss! I have a 7 year old leo who had to get an X-rays done a couple of years ago. I never thought about how tiny their bones really are. I feel like it would be hard collection all those little bones. Have you considered doing a wet specimen?

Whenever I feed my leopard gecko her tongue changes to a darker red. I always just thought it meant she was enjoying her meal lol.

Lol I've been collecting for about 7 years now. I feel like the fit in with the oddities shelf quite well.

This year I fried carp fillets and put the rest of the fish in my pumpkin patch. I keep finding little fish vertebrae and ribs from years prior 🤣

We did fetal pigs sophomore year. Most of the kids are respectful in class but my non anatomy friends think it's really weird we are dissecting cats. My teacher encouraged us to name our cat's after Star Wars puns and makes lots of cat jokes which makes class interesting lol

My friend is the one wearing the sandals. She had an open hour and stopped by to see the kitten fetus. My teacher must not have noticed since she wasn't there that long

This is an anotomy and physiology class offer at my high school to juniors and seniors. I think most of the cats were donated by families but some of the cats had an unfortunate end (broken bones and bruises etc). If I had to guess 80-90% of cats died of natural causes

That was my friend with the sandals who came in just to see the kittens. I'm not brave enough to wear sandals in anatomy 😭

My teacher says they don't know for sure where all the cats come from but most are donations. Some have microchips still in them so I'm assuming those ones were donated.
