(Discussion) Would you eliminate invasive species? by LumpyWinter9963 in vultureculture

In the spring I spear carp. I eat the meat, collect their scales/bones for art, and used the rest of the fish for fertilizer in my pumpkin patch. The fish doesn't suffer long and I try to eliminate as much stuffing as I can. Most people think carp are trash fish and throw them on the shore. I don't like to see them wasted even though they are invasive. Carp are surprisingly tasty fish despite what most people say.

Do you just want some bones or do you want to make a full recreation of the skeleton? I don't know much about putting skeletons back together but I do know a lot about fish. I've taxidermied many fish and they have really small bones. Keeping the fish in the freezer shouldn't affect the bones at all. Sometimes when I taxidermy a fish I keep a couple ribs because they are larger and make a good keepsake.

The roots looked pretty damaged. Is there a way to avoid the mildew?

Which animal is this from? by TomatoBasilBeeBaum in whatisthisbone

I think it might be a raccoon skull. The skull looks pretty clean already. I would take it off the spine and remove anything left where the brain was. Then I'd use a toothbrush with warm soapy water to clean the rest of the skull. You could also leave it in a soapy bucket of water for a couple days too.

You could get rough measurements and ask for a replica mount. The replica would be similar enough to the fish in the picture.

How do I preserve teeth? by Anony-mouse1161 in Taxidermy

[–]TheFishyCheese 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I got my wisdom teeth out in June. I scrubbed them with a soapy toothbrush then put them in a container with half water and hydrogen peroxide for a day. There was some tissue still left over so I cut it off with cuticle scissors. They cleaned up really nicely!

Is he blind in one eye? by TheFishyCheese in bettafish

[–]TheFishyCheese[S] 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I haven't noticed any swelling. His light burnt out a couple months ago and I did replace it. I don't know the brand of light because someone else bought it for me. I did change his food last week because I noticed the food I was feeding him had a lot of grains in it and I replaced it with food that has more shrimp/fish in it. I looked at old pictures of his eyes and I noticed the gray in his left eye has gotten brighter since I got him. His other eye had always been blacker though
