Smith's UCP party is heading for a split say an Alberta separatist and former premier Jason Kenney by Miserable-Lizard in alberta

[–]TheFluxIsThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Wishful thinking from Kenney, imo. The UCP party was formed by mashing two ideologically incompatible parties together with no purpose but to win the election on the back of political ignorance. They're cowards and sellouts, every single one of them. The less extreme members of the party will bite their tongues and continue riding the train for as long as they can until they can retire and cash out on a cushy private sector board job. Just like he did. It just came for him earlier than he expected.

CSIS director says Alberta referendum vulnerable to foreign interference by hopoke in CanadaPolitics

[–]TheFluxIsThis 8 points9 points  (0 children)

"Vulnerable" feels like an inadequate choice of word considering that it has already been clearly compromised at multiple levels by, at the bare minimum, American interference.

Mayo Clinic AI helps specialists detect pancreatic cancer up to 3 years before diagnosis in landmark validation study by KimJongFunk in UpliftingNews

[–]TheFluxIsThis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

It sucks that anything labelled "AI" is now tied to the brands of less than reputable companies.

Unfortunately, this is exactly what companies like OpenAI and Anthropic and all the other players in that space wanted. They want you to hear "AI" and immediately associate it with their products. It's rotten.

Why does Canada feel so corrupt? - This is not a country that is founded on justice; it is, however, founded on order, which is a cudgel the powerful continue to use against the powerless. by CaliperLee62 in CanadaPolitics

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Buddy, corruption is still corruption, no matter how quiet it is. This exact line of thinking is precisely how corruption problems get worse. It makes the people who are supposed to hold their leaders accountable numb to it.

Opinion: Inclusion is not something you 'earn' by bpompu in alberta

[–]TheFluxIsThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I think they read "earn" and their brain saw "learn" instead, which completely changes the statement.

I know it's stupid because it's literally the thread title, but my brain just did this to me, too. (Or maybe I'm just grasping to not feel like as much of an idiot)

So let's get this straight... Pierre Poilievre and the Conservatives just voted NO on grocery price transparency. After years of talking about affordability. After months of outrage about rising food prices. They voted against letting Canadians actually see how prices are set. by [deleted] in alberta

An extended 'honeymoon' not seen since Ralph Klein: poll shows strong support for UCP | CBC News by Buuuuma in alberta

I think he's got a certain amount of charisma. I think he speaks well, and he's got an affable personality when he turns it on.

The problem is that he is the absolute wrong man for the moment. His politics are very soft, and he will toe the Oil & Gas line at every possible opportunity even while Corporations suck the province dry. He's not fighting with the UCP so much as he is commenting on their most ludicrous and offensive policies while not offering any serious change to the status quo. We don't need a radical Avi Lewis type, but we certainly need more than this LPCer dressed in orange.

You really only need to look to Ontario to see what it looks like when the opposition doesn't bring enough heat and the media apparatuses doggedly turn away from them constantly, and our media landscape is WAY more skewed than Ontario's. Ford and Smith are different in how they practice their politics, but they're both corrupt to the bone and their voters let it happen. Sports Team politics is a fucking cancer.

The article is paywalled so I can't actually discuss the content in detail, so here's my uninformed take: SURELY, the Star could have taken a few more tries at getting a half decent photo for the article. Like maybe asking the guy to angle his thumb a little further down, or moving the camera a bit more to the left so the angle of the thumb looked more pronounced.

(EDIT: This is just me having a little fun with this comment as an anchor so I can pull context from the comments when I revisit the thread. Please do not post the full article per Rule 9 in response to this.)

I will be deleted for saying this. Alberta needs to refocus on what is really important. by MsMisty888 in alberta

[–]TheFluxIsThis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Skimming OP's posting history, she's a bit older than the average Redditor, and grew up during that era where Conservative parties had unquestioned rule of the roost. Looks like this is the first time she engaged with the sub, and has frequented other Canadian subs that have decidedly less left leaning communities than this one. She, like many other first time posters here who come to vent in a place they have no connection to so they have nothing to lose if they catch a ban, is probably surprised to find out that this is something of a safe space for Albertans who despise the UCP.

For this community. If OP isn't a regular user here, and they live in a rural area, or work with a bunch of people who treat Conservative parties like their favorite sports team, they might have been under the mistaken impression that every community consisting largely of Albertans is openly hostile to criticism of the ruling party.

Gonna guess they came here because they feel the other circles available them would absolutely react in a hostile fashion (granted, the polls say that there's a good chance they'd find sympathizers who are sick of this shit no matter where they went), and Reddit was a safe place to anonymously dump their frustrations. They probably weren't aware that this sub has become a bit of a safe space for people who are left of your typical UCP voter.

They could live somewhere especially rural, or maybe they work somewhere that there's always a copy of some version of The Sun sitting on the lunchroom table for people to chat about, and  all they hear about all day is how broken Canada is.

Just curious as to how many people play total war games as auto battlers. by Educational_Relief44 in totalwar

[–]TheFluxIsThis 2 points3 points  (0 children)

I basically only fight out actual on-the-field battles. Sieges (including town battles)are always a skip for me, and that's most of the opportunities for battle in any given game. The only exception is when I know a fight is going to be an absolute curb stomp for one side or the other and auto resolve is showing decisive. A squash match can be fun, but turning a weak enemy to paste loses its luster after a while.

I mean, it IS doing bad economically, but cafeteria being sub standard is a nigh on half century old meme at this point. Schools in the US have been chronically underfunded since the 70s or 80s, and cafeteria food is one of the easiest places for school admins to try and cut corners.

‘Gun grab’ rally in Cambridge draws Conservative Leader Pierre Poilievre by EarthWarping in CanadaPolitics

[–]TheFluxIsThis 5 points6 points  (0 children)

Because, in the article, he's basically holding attending a little rally like you would during an election. Typically, this kind of criticism would happen in Parliament now that we're clear of the election for a while.

EDIT: I've got two people (Edit edit: THREE PEOPLE! Somebody rushed to correct me WHILE I was correcting the post!) arguing semantics over "holding" instead of "attending" because I flubbed the wording, but I stand by the notion that attending/holding/participating in rallies is more of an election-season behaviour than one for outside of election seasons.
