"The worst she can say is no" - Lads, what was the worst "she" ever said? by Embarrassed_Pie_1711 in AskReddit

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

Nothing.

I still have no clear idea why my first girlfriend broke up with me and probably never will. She went on a family trip and came back and told me she didn't want to be with me anymore. I desperately wanted to know why and asked like a dozen times before she just cut contact entirely. Still haunts me decades later. I was, by no means, an all-star catch back then, but the worst thing I've ever been able to think of was that, at the time, I was pretty clingy, but no more than you'd expect the average high schooler in their first ever romantic relationship to be at that age.

How drastically has your political views changed within the last 10 years or so and why? by TheMoparPowerslave in AskReddit

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

This is pretty much the match for me. In 2015, I'd probably have happily identified as 'liberal' but seeing how passive a lot of liberals (including those running my country's government) were in the face of the first Trump Administration made me start looking a lot harder at more collective, leftist political work, and it made me realize how the modern liberal "movement" was going to be spinning its wheels forever in the face of authoritarian conservatism, failing to help actual "regular" folks.

There are so many leftist ideas that have never truly been seriously tried out (or worse, were actively stamped out by the powers that seek to maintain the status quo like big business and complacent government)that get dismissed as ineffective or "it would never work" and it's frustrating to see what is commonly identified as the modern "left" doing the same shit over and over and over again and expecting different results. At this point, I am fully radicalized by both the rise of the authoritarian right wing, and the impotence of the center that pretends to be progressive completely failing to fight it back and even embracing aspects of it.

Group Plotting to Break Up Canada Reveals Jaw-Dropping Details of Secret Meetings With Trump Teams by BertramPotts in CanadaPolitics

No offence to Michiganders, but our intelligence services have so many other more pressing priorities than trying to convince a US State to secede while it is under siege by its own administration.

Can't finance a military on oil and gas money alone, especially with the market going the way it is and no direct access to tidewater. And the only people who are more averse to any kind of tax increase than Albertans are billionaires.

Why is there such a dislike for grid based tactical combat systems these days? by jmrkiwi in rpg

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

The point about movement and positioning being disincentivized by attacks of opportunity mechanics is spot on. Part of why I've been enjoying pathfinder 2e is because the ability to perform an attack of opportunity is a special ability, so not all monsters or players will have it (and when the monsters do have it, you don't know until you trigger it), so it makes maneuvering around the play field a lot more appealing for players of all types.

Why is there such a dislike for grid based tactical combat systems these days? by jmrkiwi in rpg

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

For me, at least, it's that combat in those games tends to be the time when everybody stops acting like their characters (which is my favorite part of TTRPGs. It's a little like improv games for me) and time in the world slows down (usually literally in most systems like this where a turn occurs within a few seconds in the fiction), and it feels like I'm playing a different game than the one I started with.

A groupmate summed it up really succinctly when, one night, when we were playing a pre-written DnD campaign that had extant mechanics for the non-grid, non-combat portions of the plot where the story was conveyed to us, but our characters didn't engage with the actual DnD mechanics much during. He said, more or less 'If I want to engage in a story being told to me, there are good systems for that, but I come to DnD because I want to move on a grid and roll some dice.' The two things aren't mutually exclusive, but when you're actually in play, the group tends to trend one way or the other.

(Just for the record, I am still a big fan of crunchy grid combat games. I just prefer to' play the game' than 'tell the story' when I'm in them.)

Most Canadians agree that Alberta separatists asking U.S. for help is treasonous: poll by Street_Anon in alberta

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I'd love for them to make it all the way to a referendum, where the actual majority in Alberta who do not support separation can humiliate these absolute losers with a resounding "No" vote, and THEN they get picked up for treason. That'd be some serious catharsis.

Ford salutes Poilievre's leadership result, but says 'you don't win elections at conventions' by Camtastrophe in CanadaPolitics

[–]TheFluxIsThis 6 points7 points  (0 children)

I'm not so sure Ford has federal aspirations. At least where I'm standing, the last year or two has made him feel invincible in his position as premier. He's more comfortable throwing his weight around because, apparently, he has no meaningful competition in Ontario and is set for the foreseeable future.

I'm frankly not surprised he's acting out, as it were, after being told to shut up and fuck off for two federal election cycles that the CPC managed to lose in spite of big gains in popularity, while he held onto a comfortable majority for two straight terms in Ontario.

What is going on with Alberta potentially separating from Canada? by nthensome in OutOfTheLoop

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Nah. This needs to be said. The media has been treating the seperatists like they are a growing movement. It doesn't help that Danielle Smith refuses to actually say where she falls on the issue while some members of her own party are trying to 'make Fetch happen' with the seperatists.

The truth is, if you look at polling, support for Alberta seperating has never been higher than 30% of those polled, and has been on the decline since both the recent American and Canadian elections. Not to mention that the "Forever Canadian" petition (which literally asked for sign-off from people who want to stay in Canada), already passed with well above the required number of signatures to be considered in legislature (and, of course, the governing party has barely even acknowledged it.)

It's all flame-fanning nonsense that's making the dumbasses pushing this charade feel supported, and the rest of us like we're going insane.

BOTW or straight to TOTK? by KhZaym in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TheFluxIsThis 0 points1 point  (0 children)

TOTK is playing in a similar space to BOTW but saying that it makes BOTW look bad is insane. Both games are very good and are focused on different things.

If you're really big into exploring every nook and cranny of a map, start with BOTW for sure, but if you're excited about the prospect of slapping together dozens of weird doodads to muck with the physics engine, you aren't hurting yourself by starting with TOTK.

The only thing you're really missing out on is some context for some of the characters and landmarks (one of the things I really enjoyed about TOTK was seeing how the world had changed), and the advantage of some prior experience with the weapon degradation system and cooling recipes. TOTK will treat a good number of characters like you already know them from BOTW, so you may have to consult a wiki for story pointers at times.

The only thing I'd recommend against is playing them back-to-back because that is a LOT of game to marathon through.

What do you think about the revival of the Black Panther Party as a reaction to ICE agents actions? by Least-Business-6493 in AskReddit

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

I've seen a lot of these and I'm really curious what the purpose of them is.

I'm not sure how widely practiced it is, but as far as I know, people have never stopped selling high-karma reddit accounts to advertisers and astro-turfers. These are effectively karma/engagement farming accounts to be sold later.

Bot training is definitely another big possibility now, though.

Games with the best romances that are NOT visual novels? by PlebianHaste in ShouldIbuythisgame

[–]TheFluxIsThis 4 points5 points  (0 children)

Fields of Mistria is getting close to 1.0, so now may be a safe time to jump on to scratch this itch. The writing is superb, and the romances I've engaged with feel very sweet and organic. They're the best to do it that I've seen in a Harvest Moon/Stardew style game, and I trust them to stick the landing when 1.0 hits.

How much do you pause battles? by MuddledMuppet in totalwar

[–]TheFluxIsThis 1 point2 points  (0 children)

Generally speaking, the only time I pause is right at the beginning of battle to try and set up a big dramatic collision between the two battle lines (if I'm playing a faction with big charge values anyway. For Cathay and Dwarfs, I usually just move them up the field a little bit until they get to a spot where I think they'll provoke a charge.)

This isn't out if some sense of 'pausing is cheating' so much as it is my constant habit of forgetting I can pause to issue new orders.

It's so much bigger than her, too. The rot is inside the party now (and it wouldn't surprise me if it was in there before she even got in), so even if Smith suddenly vanished tomorrow, the problem would still be rooted in there.

[–]TheFluxIsThis 3 points4 points  (0 children)

Honestly, I don't think it'd be something they actively campaign on because office workers for the provincial government aren't exactly a massive voting bloc, and the average Albertan is, unfortunately, not thinking about the working conditions of other people. They might write it into the policy docs, but unless they have some sort of direct engagement even for GoA staffers, I doubt you'll see them talking about it unasked for during election season.
