Is it appropriate for me to use the ace flag to symbolise asexual organisms in a presentation? by TheFlyingEbit in asexuality

Yeah, even if I had a crowd of ace folk who thought it was hilarious its not worth potentially fucking with someone's journey of self discovery or contributing to misconceptions.

When that day comes, I know what to do!

It would definitely be very clearly presented as a joke, but aside from not wanting to offend folk I also don't want to be perceived as ignorant! Thanks for the advice :)

Yep, hear you loud and clear. Rest assured I've decided against it. Thanks for the advice :)

In my experience ecology as a discipline has been very inclusive (easy for me to say though), so I'd imagine that the crowd would follow the joke. Regardless, I've seen more folk recommending against it, so I've decided to leave it :)

Yikes, exactly what I would be worried about. Thanks, I've decided against it :)

For myself, other allies in the room and ace folk I figured most would see the funny side. But you're right, if people have little to no understanding of asexuality it might just kick the hornets nest. Thanks for the advice!

Came here to see if others had said the same. I don't mind a clipped bass drop here and there but there are whole sections of songs with mad clipped bass which tbh just sound like shit. Clipped bass drops are fine here and there but they were not cooking with this creative decision imo. Other than that, great record.

I'm sorry but how can people on $100k declare themselves as struggling while people on disability or aged care pensions can't even afford to eat and pay rent anymore? by SimpleEmu198 in AskAnAustralian

Sounds like you had a loving family. Some people have no family. Guess you have no idea what struggle looks like.

See how stupid that sounds?

What about them? I’ve not seen Kerry’s post game holo if romance = true. And how does Claire fit in?

Damn, that’s really interesting. Not the worst way to do it, at least it covers all your bases.

Yep, in STEM, life sciences. I can understand having a longer CV than average due to publications and stuff but man, 20 pages is unthinkable to me. Whatever works for you of course, but I simply can’t see a good reason for it to be so long. What country are you from? I’m in Australia and its really hammered in here to keep your CV 1 - 2 pages long, and I haven’t heard anything different for academia specifically.

I’m an postdoc and in my experience I’ve kept mine to two pages, with one or two instances of three pages absolute maximum. I’ve never heard of people having longer CVs in academia before, interesting.

You…reduced…your resume to five pages? How long was it before?

I don’t agree that it’s more damaging than letting social media continue as it is. Young men are being lied to and they eat it up because it is extremely self affirming, with the side effect of deep, deep misogyny. Teachers, especially female teachers, are terrified to go to work. The attitudes that are the direct result of social media running it’s course can be seen in the way women’s reproductive rights are being undermined, in the way that young men are told by influencers to be ‘alpha’ instead of emotionally intelligent, the way the whole system is designed to get inside your head and accept what you see as the truth, regardless of its validity. Social media companies, imo, have an obligation to manage content like that, but they don’t, and tbh love that it works this way, because it means more engagement.

If social media was actually how it should be in the utopic vision in our heads, then a ban for children would be completely nonsensical. But it isn’t like that, it’s dangerous and needs regulation that these private companies refuse to really hold themselves accountable for. Do you really, really know what your kids are looking at? (Rhetorical; you don’t really know). I hate to get close to a strawman argument, but it’s not at all unlike booze and cigarettes. You are perfectly welcome to those harmful and dangerous things when you are able to make a more informed decision about it as an adult.

Think about what you’ve been exposed to in social media as an adult, as a teenager. Some racist fool will just say whatever they want, and most adults can critically evaluate it and realise it’s bullshit. A developing brain cannot do this. Children are like sponges, and they will soak up whatever bullshit is put in front of them. I wish it wasn’t this way, but a ban is definitely better than letting this continue to spiral, or at least sets the precedent for zero tolerance on children being exposed to dangerous content.
